4 out of 5 eggsWorks just like it said it will

Pros: - large capacity at a fair price
- formatted fine with Ubuntu 14.01 LTS.

Cons: Screw holes on the side. There are only the front and rear holes! My case uses the center and front holes. This will be difficult to figure out.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: Was initially worried about the comments and reviews about "Archive" drives. Planned to use as backup/archive array. Very happy with performance so far. Have only had these drives running about 3 days.

System: i7-5820K, 64GB Ram, ASUS X99 Raider
Samsung 500GB SSD
RAID6 array = 8 x 6TB Seagate 7200 rpm ST6000DM001 => connected to onboard SATA ports
RAID 5 array = 5x8TB Seagate 5400 rpm ST8000AS0002 => connected across 2 to (4port) SYBA SI-PEX40064 PCI-Express 2.0 SATA III card
Linux Mint 17.3

All drives arrived very well packed in bubble.
Connected all drives via two PCI-to-SATA cards
All drives were immediately recognized by OS
RAID5 array completed building in approx 24hrs

Read/Write results were very positive (See below)

copy data 260 GB (92 folders & 980 files) using NEMO gui

From 6TB RAID6 to 8TB RAID5 array ==> approx 400 MB/s
From 6TB RAID6 to SSD ==> approx 410 MB/s

From 8TB RAID5 to 6TB RAID6 array ==> approx 390 MB/s
From 8TB RAID5 to SSD array ==> approx 360 MB/s

From SSD to 6TB RAID6 array ==> approx 510 MB/s
From SSD to 8TB RAID5 array ==> approx 350 MB/s

Viewed HD 1080p video using DLNA server on multiple devices without any stutter or lag.

These 8TB 5400 rpm drives seem to run cooler (35c) than my 6TB 7200 RPM drives (52c) however may be an artifact of the airflow because the new 8TB drives are right in front the fans and obstruct airlfow to the 6TB drives.

Cons: I could only purchased 5 while on sale... I could use a few more so I'll wait until they go on sale again.

Other Thoughts: Yes, if I see reliable results over the next few months I plan to buy more.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't know yet

Pros: Not sure if I like it or not.

Cons: This is my first DOA HDD, but Newegg is taking it back and replacing it. My guess is defect because after installing it there was a metal on metal grinding squealing noise. If I had to guess I would say the read heads were dragging against the platter. Hopefully the replacement will work.

Other Thoughts: I will reserve full judgment after I get my replacement and it is working. I do understand that it isn't practical to check every one coming off the line so it is to be expected that there will be some failures.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed on day one.

Pros: Large capacity

Cons: Unreliable

Other Thoughts: Once formatted, I was able to copy about 72GB to it before Windows popped up a message indicating the drive had 'disconnected'. After that, the BIOS would recognize it only intermittently. Seagate said to send it to them for replacement, but they had nothing to replace it with. After four days I took it back the NewEgg and they gave me a refund. Thumbs up to NewEgg, thumbs down to Seagate.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap, slower, and no DOA in 9 drives

Pros: Least expensive
No drives were DOA

Cons: slower overall speed compared to pricier drives (to be expected)

Other Thoughts: Got 9 of these drives for 8-bay Synology 1815+ in RAID6. Quickly learned that reviews say expect 57 hours for system to be ready or for rebuild of one drive, and that these drives are noticeably slower. So far at 11% of parity consistency check since about 10 hours. Decided to add 2 SSD for cache and install 6 of these 8 TB in RAID6, for 29 TB space. I'll check back after its all done to update if drives survived the install. Will test with NVMe and 2 GB LACP to minimize any other bottlenecks. I think it will suit my purpose for home storage but time will tell.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm Happy So Far...

Pros: Massive Storage
Decent Price
High Speed Reads
Decent Write Speeds

Cons: Nothing Yet

Other Thoughts: It's too early to say how well this drive will last but that won't be determined until, hopefully, +5 years from now. I've only had it a week but I'm very happy and hope it will last.

Over the wire (gig-e) write speeds were a fixed 125 MB all the way through. I found that to be excellent. Read speeds are high as well, I think they were close to 200. As far as I'm concerned, that's fantastic.

Unlike everyone else, I'm using this, effectively, as a giant WORM drive. It's there to hold all my PVR recordings and play them back. As such, it really is write once and read many. I was very happy with wire speed writes and filled the drive in no time.

My main reason for getting it was to consolidate several drives into one. With 7 drives in my workstation it was getting really convoluted. Bought one, tried it out, and just ordered up a second one and that puts an end to all my storage needs. One drive for Movies and one drive for Series. Un-install 5 other drives and recoup the electrical and space savings.

No fuss, no muss. My only hope is that they last. Two of the drives in my workstation have been rotating 24x7 for 7 years. Non-stop. Almost every drive in the system is +5 years of continual service.

I get a kick out of all the people ignoring the drive's design and either trying to run it in a RAID array or wondering why the drive 'speeds up and slows down'. Forget about it, it's designed to store a lot of data and stream it back to you at a good speed. It's meant for data you want to keep and not change often.

In other words....it's an ARCHIVE drive. And yet performance is great. Use it for what it's designed for and you'll probably be happy.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive for your Archive

Pros: *Gigabyte/Price ratio
*Holds a lot more than a 3TB drive
*Not DOA but working flawlessly
*Works in my old iView HF2-SU3 JBOD box of wonders

Cons: *Not superfast but it's an archive drive so I knew that
*7.27TB usable real estate to park my stuff after formatting, boo.

Other Thoughts: The drive was shipped sealed in an anti-static bag sealed in a layered foam box, inside another larger box surrounded by big fluffy air pillows. It was shipped with the utmost care, thank you Newegg! The HDD JBOD box I put it into was rated to only accept max 3TB drives, but I have 2x 3TB, 1x 5TB, and now this one, which works perfectly in his new home. I copied/transferred files from various other drives for 2 days and it worked hard and long (that's what she said) without a break and did not disconnect or experience other issues at all.

The drive seems to be performing very well for me. It is serving it's intended purpose very well, storage for mass volume of stuff. I am able to play/read all files without hesitation and copy speed averaged about 85 Mbps.

As long as you use this drive for its intended purpose of storing your vast collection of Pokemon and Transformers cartoons, you will be very pleased. I plan on replacing 2 more 3TB drives with this one when I can afford it. Time to stock up on ramen noodles so I can buy more of these. :-)

1 out of 5 eggsDead on arrival

Pros: Cheap but you get what you pay for

Cons: Drive spins up but not recognized. Tried 3 different computers (internally connected as well as USB docks). Currently waiting on replacement. Not impressed with Seagate quality :(

5 out of 5 eggsGood Large Archive

Pros: Size. Price/GB. Brand.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This is a 5900RPM drive for Archive/backup. Not intended to be "fast" or used as a primary. Received drive on a cold day and was left on porch by delivery company. Brought it inside and let it warm up for a couple hours before connecting to my Windows7 system. Initialized, partitioned and formatted with no problems. Formatted to 7.2GB which is what I expected. Did a test run with 35GB of files being copied over. A mixture of small 300mb files and large 5GB files. No errors and transfer speeds never dropped below 110MB/sec on a SATAII port. After test run and a couple of days with no issues copied the rest of my 5GB of data to it. Too soon to comment on durability. Otherwise would have given it 5 stars.
updated this review 03.01.2016. now give 5 stars. have had for 3 months with absolutely no problems.
