1 out of 5 eggsNot a smooth experience and don't use seatools

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: - 4 TB in one hdd
- portable (no power adapter)

Cons: - Prone to fail
- Don't use seatools for testing. The drive never fails the test even if there are bad sectors on the drive.
- Slower (Read:91 MB/s Write:40 MB/s and Access: 18 msec) than 2TB Seagate backup slim (Read: 100 MB/s Write: 70 MB/s and Access: 18 msec)

Other Thoughts: Using this drive for the first time, I used seatools to test it and it never failed the tests. After the tests, I started backing up my stuff (1 TB) and after 24 hours, the back up wasn't finished. I used disk utility program on Ubuntu OS to test it (SMART test) and there were 24 bad sectors on the drive and I believe the reason of unsuccessful back up because I used my 2TB Seagate back up slim hard drive to back up the same data and it took less than 10 hours to do the back up.
I returned when I found out there are bad sectors and I received recertified product. Recertified product is working properly right now and there are no bad sectors, but it is slow. I wasted my entire week for this problem.

I don't recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggsNot DOA, but HORRIBLE performance

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: Great capacity, awesome form factor.
Excellent to just plug and copy!
Only 1 of the 2 drives is currently failing.

Cons: If you have infinite time, you *might* be able to fill the drive. Even on a 3.0 interface, these drives (I bought two) exhibit abyssal read/write speeds.

Seeing continuous seek times of 800-1600 ms. Most of the time, it's toward the slower end. Overall performance is heinous. Took over 6 hours to do a differential backup due to crummy throughput.

After 1 1/2 weeks, second drive is failing in backups about 50% of the time with a "device IO failure". I bought these drives as backups, but I have no confidence in them since they regularly fail writes.

Small file reads/writes (including FS lookups) take literally seconds. I mean, noticeably long periods of time whereas other drives blast through them without a moment hesitation.

Horrible transfer rates, horrible response times, and failing hardware. Cannot handle small files in reasonable time amounts.

I *tried* to perform a benchmark, but can't get useful results as the device constantly fails.

Other Thoughts: If you care about data, and want to use these drives this millennium, stay clear of these things. Throughput makes them virtually unusable, and they appear to be failing already after 1.5 weeks.

Seriously, Seagate, get your act together. Horribly, horribly let down by trashy performance.

Would rate 0 eggs if possible.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB device not recognized

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: Price, size (physical and memory size)

Cons: Had it in my hands for about a week. Using it for the last 2 days to backup office files and I'm getting USB not recognized (when it actually recognized that something's in the USB port.)

I've attempted swapping out the cord with other hard drives to no avail. Giving it one more night of testing in case moving files has overheated it (doubtful since i have just moved 85gb of files for 30 min or so.)

I will be following up on warranty or replacement or refund shortly.

Other Thoughts: I use several of the 2TB Seagates with no problems at all. They're wonderful, so i assumed the 4TB might be wonderful too. Not the one i bought Black Friday.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother failure

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: Most compact 4TB 2.5" disk. Ideal for traveling.

Cons: Failed in under 2 months of careful use and after filing with data ready for major trip. Currently in E Europe so warranty is worthless as it costs more to ship than to buy another. I felt that the disk cable connector might be the problem as all of my cables didn't seem to seat well. Opened it up (I know warranty is now void but I needed the data off the disk) and found the connector and electronics were fine but the actual disk had failed.

Other Thoughts: My 4 Seagate 2Tb 2.5" slims are still working but the 4Tb proved again that modern disks have high failure rate and multiple copies are the only safe approach. Sad. I would gladly pay more to get better portable reliability. on trips. Replacing with 2 2TB drives and hoping for the best.

5 out of 5 eggs4TB of storage in a relatively small form factor

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: The unit has 4TB of storage and utilizes usb 3.0 speeds. Can backup data and pics on your social media sites. Additional benefit is you get some space on the Cloud.

The device has a relatively small form factor for having 4tb of storage. Great for backing up files on your computers, storing pics, music, and videos.

Unit is powered by a usb cable and runs without generating any measurable heat.

Running some read/write benchmarks on various software applications I received these scores.

CrystalDiskMark 4.03 x64 Read 134.2 MB/s and Write 126.8 MB/s
ATTO Disk v 2.47 Read 126.2 MB.s and Read 116.4 MB/s
AS SSD v 1.8.5611.... Read 127.28 MB/s and Read 112.15 MB/s
HD Tune 2.55 Max Read 139.5 MB/s and Average Read 118.2 MB/s

Cons: I see no cons other than the short time frame this is warrantied for.

Other Thoughts: Time will tell how long the unit will maintain operations before succumbing to issues. You are getting some good bang for your buck for this amount of storage. And though the HDDs in this device are running at 5400 rpms the read/write benchmarks utilizing usb 3.0 are good.

4 out of 5 eggsCompact, fast and lots of storage.

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: Extremely Small: I was actually a little surprised when I pulled it out of the box; I expected a 4TB to be larger, but it was only about the size of my hand.

Fast speeds: It got an average speed of about 105MB/s while transferring a 30GB file from my SSD, however, it only got 35MB/s write and 65MB/s read when hooked up to my NAS. This is probably due to the USB ports on it.

Easy to Use: Using the drive itself is just plug 'n play and the various utilities shouldn't prove to be much more trouble.
Free 2 years of cloud storage (200GB worth)

Can backup Facebook and Flickr photos

Solid construction

Cons: Only one year warranty: I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker, but you might if you're going to be lugging it around everywhere and backing up a lot of important files on it.

Other Thoughts: There's nothing particularly noteworthy about this drive, but it's a very solid buy if you're looking for a external backup drive. I can't say more much other than that you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsHuge Backup Capacity

This review is from: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Portable External  Hard Drive with 200GB of Cloud Storage & Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 - STDR4000100

Pros: Giant 4 TB capacity

Very Small

Cool under constant Load ( I bombarded the drive for 96 hours straight and it remained cool the entire time)

Reasonable Transfer Speed: 131 Megs/Sec

Sturdy Construction of Case

Easy to Use

Easy to Install

Free 200 GB free OneDrive cloud storage for 2 years with registration of the drive.

Cons: There 2 Cons with this device but none are worth taking an EGG off.

1. The Power Cable. The end that connects into back of the unit is a design I cant stand. A normal full size USB would be way way more preferable to the Micro USB/combo cable. I've used similar cables from corsair and they end up not lasting. When you plug it in it can feel flimsy. A full Size USB would be way way more reliable and provide a better longer lasting secure connection to the rear of the BackUp Plus.

2. Like all Mechanical Hard drives this one suffers from the same limitations. If you are moving large Files (movies, zips, large games) you will get about 100-131 Megs/sec would is good for a portable hard drive. But like all mechanical drives once you start to copy ALOT of VERY SMALL files. You will notice the transfer speed drops. 4k/16K file types etc. But seeing how small file transfers are the Achilles heel of all mechanical hard drives I cant dock an egg, for something that all NON-SSD drives suffer from.

Other Thoughts: The drive came undamaged and well packaged. The packaging is small as well as the drive. I was expecting something bigger for he 4TB capacity but the drive is extremely compact. The chassis of the Backup plus is very Sturdy and well made.

First ran HD Tune to test drive.

USB3: It topped out at 131 MB/s with an access time of 13.3 ms
Very reasonable scores for the capacity of the drive.

This drive arrived with good timing. 2 Friends both needed fresh installs (viruses/spyware destroyed their OS's) but before we wipe the drives clean I back up everything from their combined 5 hard drives. Over the coarse of about 5 days I copied roughly 7.7 TB to and from the drive. While I was freshly installing windows and then restoring files (movies, Steam Library, Origin library, Music, etc .

The drive remained very cool while under 24/7 operation for that time period. Using my thermal scanner the drive never exceeded 87.5 F. Most spots were about 82-83F just a small hot spot or two at 85.5-87.5. But your could hold the drive and it was never "hot". Which surprised me, considering I was using the drive non stop for 4 days.

To get the most from the drive I recommend using a more Modern OS Windows 8.1/10 etc basically an OS that Support GBT file format so you get the most capacity from the drive without needing to partition.

The drives software is also easy to use. If you try the Lyve software its easy to since the Backup Plus and your Desktop PC.

Overall I was extremely please with the Backup Plus performance, and how cool it remained under constant load.

I was also impressed with the size of the Unit. Remembering how 1-3 years ago how much bulkier units that approached the 4TB size were its very nice to see the units are extremely compact, and yet despite the small size the chassis of the unit is sturdy and well made.
