5 out of 5 eggsWorth it

This review is from: Seagate 1TB Gaming SSHD SATA 6.0Gb/s 32GB NAND 2.5" Laptop Internal Bare Drive ST1000LX001

Pros: These drives perform, simply put. Ignore negative reviews, and research online. For PS4's for example, reviews have shown that SSHD's outperform stock drives, and the difference between a $500 SSD drive and these are almost negligible.

My iMac uses a similar method, Apple calls it "Fusion Drive", same principle though they do it with software in the OS.

My complaint with this hybrid technique in 2.5" drives has always been the small amount of flash (typically 8GB).

With this drive, that's quadrupled! 32GB means the entire PS4 OS, plus several games will run right off the SSD portion of the drive, always.

Cons: The only downside is the 5400rpm platter in there. You really want it to be 7200, at least on paper. But in real-world use these drives simply outperform standard 7200rpm drives.

3 out of 5 eggsCoulda, shoulda, woulda

This review is from: Seagate 1TB Gaming SSHD SATA 6.0Gb/s 32GB NAND 2.5" Laptop Internal Bare Drive ST1000LX001

Pros: Large enough NAND to be useful.
5 year warranty, ... maybe?

Cons: - This is a spinner. Don't get confused by shiny flash. It IS a spinner and it spins at maximum of 5400RPM. THAT is as slow as it gets for at least the last decade. A 5400RPM drive can barely outrun IDE | ATA drives of the years gone by(previous decades).

- The 32GB of *Flash* NAND is not usable except by the drive electronics which decides via algorithm what IT thinks you think is important and most often used. Really! Purchase this to get a/another mother-in-law.

- It is a con ... A slight of hand ... A magician's trick that shows the shiny new NAND while selling 5400RPM drive at 10k RPM prices. The 1TB 7200 RPM 2.5" HDDs sell for ~$70 and less($55 Promo sale here at Newegg, item N82E16822145881). So, for the same|less cost, (2) 7200RPM HDD in RAID 0 will outrun this SSHD and provide you with two TB(~1860GiB) instead of one TB(~930GiB). If you still just have to have flash NAND, a 32GB USB 3/3.1 superspeed flash drive is less than 20-bucks and windoz can/will use it to speed boot-up the same way this drive purports to do.

Other Thoughts: Why do they(Seagate, Hitachi, HGST/WD, Toshiba, ...etc.), continue to make 5400RPM? Because they are cheaper to make but mostly because fools buy them.
PLEASE, FGS, STOP BUYING 5400RPM HDD!
We, the consumers, will never get rid of this junk as long as YOU buy it. When you stop, they will make this same drive as 7200RPM, which is what they coulda, shoulda and woulda have done if the consumer demanded it.

Seagate has been one of the best storage manufacturing companies and I would say, for a long time, the best, but since they bought Maxtor ...not so much. This kind of stuff would never have happened before. I know that because I dealt with Seagate exclusively in the last decade and was never disappointed. I hope, sincerely, they regain the leadership and with it respect they will deserve.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate SSHD Has 5-Year Warranty + 32GB SSD Cache

This review is from: Seagate 1TB Gaming SSHD SATA 6.0Gb/s 32GB NAND 2.5" Laptop Internal Bare Drive ST1000LX001

Pros: Our original Seagate 1TB SSHD Hybrid drive with 8GB SSD cache has proven to be very reliable over the last 3 years. Seagate has built on its success by installing a larger 32GB SSD cache. This means even more of your programs, games and other frequently-used files will open much faster than on a regular laptop drive.

Comes with 5-Year warranty.

Cons: Price seems a little high but it's brand new on the market so that's to be expected.

Other Thoughts: 32GB SSD cache is a huge amount and it should really maximize performance while still providing a large storge capacity of 1TB. Just give it a few days use to "learn" all your often-used stuff and it will store the necessary data on the SSD cache for quickest access and still keep all that same data safely on the regular 1TB storage area, too.

Here's the usual reminder: While manufacturers advertise 1TB capacity, Windows measures it more conservatively and will report the available capacity as being approximately 931GB. You haven't lost any space. They just measure it differently.

Pure SSDs have come down in price a lot. Here at Newegg.com you can get a 480GB Mushkin ECO3 SSD or Sandisk Ultra II SSD for around the same price as this new Seagate Hybrid drive. Those SSDs have a 3-Year warranty.
