1 out of 5 eggsI should have known better...

Pros: Initially I liked the price, capacity, and interface options.

Cons: I used this enclosure on a Vista/Win7 machine. It housed all my DVD rips/music and was left on 24x7, accessed very regularly.

Just after the warranty was past its one year the controller died. I thought I had lost the entire drive (due to the systematic clicking), but SpinRite showed no problems. I tossed the disk in another enclosure and it came to life. So, in the end, my data and the actual drive (Seagate) can be put into another enclosure... but the one chunk of hardware in this rig for which Iomega is responsible is toast. I guess I should have let my relationship with Iomega stay back with those old ZIP disks in college.

1 out of 5 eggsIomega will not take responsibility

Pros: Matches mac mini.

Cons: I wrote the review below this one, regarding 4 of these drives dying within a year. After reading Iomega's response blaming this on my environment/possible power fluctuations I am posting these thoughts to try to steer people in the right direction.

Other Thoughts: I do not have an environmental issue. I have buffalo and fantom external drives that have been sitting right next to the iomegas for the past year. Those two drives have not had a single problem while the minimax is pretty much useless and makes loud noises until it fails. when a product is good i say so and when it is bad people have a right to know. the enclosure/fan for this drive, produced by iomega, are horribly unreliable in the face of other drives working flawlessly.

1 out of 5 eggsworst drive i've ever owned

Pros: matches mac mini.

Cons: i did not purchase this drive from newegg, but felt obligated to post a review for this item. i am on my 4th replacement drive within one year, after losing countless amounts of personal data. every replacement they have sent has died within a month. worst drive i have ever seen, what more can i say?

Manufacturer Response:

We are deeply sorry that you have had such a negative experience with this device.

I would verify that a harmful environment is not affecting the drive negatively. Look for things such as power fluctuations, heat or low ventilation, or shock/vibrations that might cause the drive to deteriorate rapidly.

With more information we may be able to help with this unfortunate situation. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.

5 out of 5 eggspleased

Pros: Worked exactly as expected, decent transfer speed and good reliability.

Cons: I'm not a fan of the case design but thats simply asthetics.

Other Thoughts: I use this unit as a backup storage which means I only use it every month or two and when I use it I simply cut and paste my entire C drive onto it (takes about an hour for 80 Gb). I do not use this for everyday use or active use.

1 out of 5 eggsdead after 2 months and super hot

Pros: Cheap.. pun intended.. it wasn't bad while it worked. it got very hot after a lot of use and used as a time machine backup was the last straw for this camel.

Cons: 2 months and dead, not only is it dead but in testing to see if it was the drive or hub etc. it killed my mybook as well. very dissatisfied with this product. i will attempt to contact iomega but based on a previous review i may not get very far.

Other Thoughts: iomega will not get one more penny out of me. you should do the same.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy with the drive

Pros: Very happy with the drive. You can read about the features here so I won't enumerate them. I'm not sure why the other reviewers had such trouble with this drive - I'm guessing they got older models. The model I have is quiet, about 35mb/sec on firewire, and reasonably cool. Also, the front LED is a dim white, suggesting the reviewer with a blue LED has an older/different model.

Very happy with the drive, performs well on FW, USB and.. as well as possible when connected to my airport extreme (which drags all drives down anyway).

Cons: Iomega notes that if stacking with an airport extreme, make sure to put the extreme on TOP of this drive. (The extreme gets hot, and presumably most of the signal comes out of the top/sides rather than the bottom.)

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT USE! PERIOD!

Pros: It's cheap and you bet it's cheap. Seagate internal, but there not really noted for quiet or low heat drives are they. There only noted for their 5yr warranty and that's about it (since 1999).

Cons: We KNOW Mac's. This setup is completely absurd and unbelievable. The drive is JUNK seagate. The housing is PLASTIC. The heat is UNSPEAKABLE! In testing we transfered 250gb's of data. The entire time we watched the Mini's temp. Generally a Mini C2D will run 115-120* with stock fan control. About 20mins into it the CPU temp was nearing 130*. We repeatedly reported these to Iomega and there response was NOT TO TRANSFER that much data and to turn the unit on ONLY when you needed to access the drive.

Stop right there, think of that response.

Also USB Transfer rate was a lousy 22-24mb, firewire was marginally better at 29-33. FireWire SHOULD be 35+ and USB should tap out at 30.

This company can and has done better.

Other Thoughts: Lacie makes the ideal unit for the Mini and it's cheaper if not the same price but either way a better value. The Lacie will get hot but it raises the Mini up and cradles it perfectly to keep temps reasonable. 2 Firewire outs, 3 USB outs.

USE SMCFanControl software for both products, set the min speed to 1950-2250rpms - you will NOT hear the fan but it will keep the mini much cooler (sub 115* range the entire time).

1 out of 5 eggsRuns Hot and Dead After 2 Months

Pros: Form factor

Cons: Runs too hot; noisy; failed after 2 months; customer support is the worst I have encountered. If you plan to put this under your Airport Extreme, DON'T DO IT. When the drive is in active use, it gets so hot you cannot touch it for longer than a second or two. This correspondingly heats up the Airport Extreme. The heat will shorten the life of both products.

Other Thoughts: iomega's support is the worst I have encountered. It is literally impossible to get through to someone to get an RMA. There is no phone number--iOmega forces you to pay $25 to get it. I even tried to do that just so I could get through to someone and I could never get the transaction to go through. I have also been unable to make the "live chat" work. It keeps telling me that it is trying to find an agent and then just fails. This is after 10 attempts. I will never buy an iomega product again. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat hard drive!

Pros: Matches the footprint, finish, and color of the Mac Mini PERFECTLY. Although it is made of plastic instead of aluminum you'd never know unless you were physically handling it. Includes a short firewire cable for hookup to your mini as well as a 3 foot firewire cable and 3 foot usb cable. Built in 3 port firewire hub (1 port used for hookup to the Mac) and also a 3 port USB hub. Comes preformatted with HFS+ (Mac OSX format) for instant use with your Mac. Includes a CD with a utility to reformat into NTFS or FAT for use with linux or windows. Large capacity, fast drive. Very pleased!

Cons: I only found three cons: 1) The drive is loud compared to the MacMini (the MacMini is completely silent). This drive is also louder than my external Vantec Nextstar. Its not too bad ot noticeable, but my mac is no longer silent. 2) There's a big Iomega label on the front, which isn't aesthetically pleasing compared to the clean elegant finish of the front of the MacMini. 3) The drive activity light is huge, and is bright blue compared to the tiny white pinhole power light on the front of the Mac. It's overbearing and distracting.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm very satisfied and would purchase it again. The main reason is due to the almost perfect match to the Mac Mini. I'd be less inclined to purchase it for any other computer if aesthetics weren't important.
