Beware!
- Pros: Price, appearance
- Cons: Software, firmware, operating system.
- Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive just a few days ago 07/01/2009 and according to instruction, checked for any firmware updates that may be available. There was one available, so I downloaded and installed it.
That was the EOL for this drive.
Unknown to me at the time, Iomega had just put this firmware update online a few hours before I downloaded it. Over the next several hours incidents began to crop up on Iomegas forum website, and others were having the same issue as myself. "Drive cannot be addressed on the network"
Turns out the firmware update bricks the drive. This is confirmed. I have spent a lot of time on the phone with TECH support and while they did manage to come up with a work around for one problem, there are others and it is only a workaround after all.
This is a time sensitive post, as I am sure that in time the issue will be resolved, but for the next month or so beware and check into the firmware update before installing!!!
-
Manufacturer Response:Thank you for posting this and letting people know that there were potential issues with the 2.038 update if applied to the wrong firmware level. We want to make sure that our customer have the best experience possible with this device. Due to the sensitive nature of these issues, our engineering team has quickly resolved the potential issues that existed in the 2.038 firmware and have released an updated 2.039 full firmware upgrade. This update can be applied to all firmware levels of the Home Media Network Hard Drive. It is available immediately from the support site through Iomega.com.
Frustration
- Pros: Does EVERYTHING IOmega claims perfectly! I tested everything. Got the print server to work in seconds both with and without the included software. However I prefer not to use extra software. It's so easy I thought the instructions were overkill!
- Cons: Although not a huge deal but, I'd like to see a spin down feature added to the firmware to help save energy. And B, the actual drive itself is a Linux/XFS file system which concerns me a little when it comes to the drive becoming corrupted and so far there is no cure. However recovery of your data is possible through a Linux system so don't let this scare you from this unit. I have to say it. PERFORM REGULAR BACKUPS!
- Other Thoughts: My frustration is from all the whinners who review. Either you're a 14 year old with mommy's credit card or not educated enough to buy the product and are too lazy to spend the 5 minutes or so it takes to educate yourself. Here's a hint. GOOGLE! TCIP is not that hard. This unit gets a five and I'd give it more if I could to counteract all the negative ratings of which have no merit. Also people if you can't get this unit to work DO NOT rate your tech knowledge anything more than 'Low understanding'.

Excellent value for NAS
- Pros: Bittorrent & FTP client; gigabit ethernet, iTunes server/DLNA/UPnP capability; print server via USB. Easy to use and set up. Comes with EMC Retrospect Express Backup and Disaster Recovery, 2GB Mophie storage, 1yr free TZO.
- Cons: Only 1 drive, doesn't seem replaceable, no RAID. Drive always spins. Fan always runs (very quiet).
- Other Thoughts: Would be great if the HDD spun down. Takes a long time to transfer all of my media over my non 802.11n/gigabit network to the drive (that's not the NAS' fault). Took a little work to get the Torrent client working. It was nice to get our printer on the network too instead of turning on the main PC whenver we wanted to print. Overall, this is a great value and I recommend it to my friends. Sharp looking too!
Awesome Product
- Pros: Absolutely silent, huge capacity, fast enough for our house on my 10/100 network, Iomega tech support helped me set it up in Windows 7 and they were very knowledgeable, serves music to my Roku Soundbridge M1001, print server works perfectly with my Epson Stylus Photo 2200
- Cons: Software that comes with it does not work in Windows 7 so as a result I had to contact tech support. Ordinarily, that would result in a couple less eggs but they were fast, knowledgeable, and helpful so 5 eggs it is. Plus, Windows 7 has only been out for a few days so I'm willing to cut some slack.
- Other Thoughts: I was a little nervous placing my order for this product based on some of the reviews. Then I tried to install the software on my Windows 7 machine and it wouldn't install. I almost returned it, but figured I'd give the tech support chat a try and was pleasantly surprised to have it sorted out in 15 minutes. I have to put my 2 cents in and say that I am thrilled with this product. It does what they say it will and for a very attractive price! Mine has version 2.040 of the firmware. It is very well constructed and despite what other reviews say, it runs silently even when the drive is working. It also runs cool, the aluminum case is cool to the touch. It will easily replace the old Pentium machine I've been using as a Home File/Print Server. As for backup, I plan to subscribe to Mozy and have it backup this drive. There is a free trial included with the drive that will backup up to 2GB which of course won't do beans with a 1TB drive but their monthly subscription is reasonable.
Works as Expected
- Pros: Plugged into switch in server room and it showed up on our windows 2003 domain. Used the discovery software on my personal system but then just mapped the device on the remaining work computers by IP address. Didn't mess with any of the extra software that came with the system and even the network discovery software is unnecessary if you don't want to use it.
- Cons: This stuff is really not Cons, just more thoughts. I took a while to realize that my personal software firewall settings were stopping the NAS from showing up on my machine. Also, tried to enable remote access but it couldn't find a connection. I'm sure this is our hardware firewall or some environmental setting, but I didn't bother to diagnose since I was only looking at the feature because it was there and not because it was something I was planning on using.
- Other Thoughts: My work environment has 8 computer users. Archived client projects are backed up to DVD/CD's and now added to this NAS for easy network access. Server is windows 2003 and doesn't have enough room for these archived files.
I haven't done any benchmarking for speeds but they seem consistent with what I would expect. Don't really know how it works under multiple simultaneous users but at the same time I haven't had any office complaints.
