4 out of 5 eggs2TB's taxiing to your Apple

Pros: I have a 2TB and a 4TB version of this because it's solid, attractive construction with pretty solid connections (WD drives seem to have flimsy FW connection). I get 45-55MBps constant with 60MBps peaks copying large files over FW800.

I got it in 2008 and it's still working fine as RAID0 with no lost data. (I don't recommend pressing your luck w/ critical data on RAID0 though)

Cons: This thing is LOUD! It's quite literally like a hairdryer all the time. The drives (mine are Samsung branded) are no louder than you'd expect, but it has a 40mm Evercool EC4010H12E fan in the back that is out of control.

Other Thoughts: Switch out the fan with a Scythe 40mm unless you're going to store this in a cabinet with no airflow. It's a real nice drive with a silent fan, even if it pushes a bit less air.

Manufacturer Response:

We have not have any complaints about the noise. I will address this with our engineering team though and pass your comments along. Thank you for bringing these up and to our attention.

4 out of 5 eggsUSB Hook Up Can fool you

Pros: Many Ports
Quite even with its little fan
Cool Blue lights
Nice for RAID device and small too

Cons: Mac White cables clash with my Black PC motif ;)
1394 on my machine stalls out (USB / Estata work great)
Might need to read the manual it figure out your using wrong USB port on back ;)

Other Thoughts: IF you don't read the manual and use USB you might be in for a suprise. IT comes with a USB cable with two flat (A) ends. Normally one end would be Large or Mini B
I scanned the manual Foir some reason I tried it in all three USB ports and NOTHING.. the drive acted like it wasn't even on ..
Surprise.. read the manual again... The eSTAT port doubles as the USB INPUT port. I had never seen that.
Once I figured that out.. It ran great.. but eSata burned USB with copy test 2:45 for eSATA 4:48 for USB.. for some reason my 1394 copy starts fast then slows down maybe drive on PC can't handle multi threaded copies.. so will not blame drive.. BUT watch out for the dual purpose esata USB in port.. USB only works using that the other three are HUB outs.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware!

Pros: It looks pretty

CONS: it's loud

Cons: When you realize that the pretty aluminum finish was painted on and comes off easily when rubbed against other objects

When you realize that you have to reboot your computer and boot this device up at the same time in order for it to work (if you turn on this device and connect it to your computer while it's already on, be prepared for crashes)

When you realize that the device loses all data if you don't turn it off with the computer (i.e. a crash, computer freeze, any other events that causes you to shut down the computer abnormally, will corrupt the drive)

When you realize how easily this drive malfunctions

When you realize how horrible Iomega's Support is, how you can't get a refund after 30 days, how you can only get another device of the same model to replace your existing drive - with the same native issues, and you have to pay more money to mitigate these problems

When you realize how much time you've lost trying to solve the problems you've experienced with this

Other Thoughts: I use this with my Macbook Pro. Thought I was getting a bargain for the money, this was my first Iomega product and it will be the last. Truly a horrible experience - don't be surprised when you lose your 2TBs worth of data on this piece of junk. If you're a Mac user, be sure to get DiskWarrior to try to recover your files, it was a lifesaver for me after this thing went kaput.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for your negative experience with this product. It seems that you have had a number of unfortunate issues that are unusual to this product.

From your post I see that you have had a number of abnormal shutdowns and potential disconnections. We recommend that the device be fully dismounted before being removed or powered down. If it is actively transferring data at any point during a forced power off of the drive or the computer the volume may get corrupted. A normal shutdown process flushes the data cache and dismounts the drive properly. It is best to perform a normal shutdown or dismount the drive before disconnecting or turning the unit off.

Crashes may occur if the drive was corrupted during an abnormal shutdown and then reattached in it's corrupt state. Having the device attached at boot-up will allow a disk check process to occur, in most cases, which is why you may not have experienced crashes on boot-up.

1 out of 5 eggsTried at several PCs, no success

Pros: none

Cons: Never succeeded to run it. It was not determined at any of 5 desktops I tried to connect. I put usb and nothing happened, even no new unknown hardware appeared in Device Manager. I saw hard drive was running and the fan was working inside but anyway that means nothing. Returned for refund and is looking for other model and producer.

4 out of 5 eggsthe first

Pros: This device is light, quiet, cool, and fast. Plus the aluminum body is really sharp looking. I bought It for my macbook pro, and it easily connected to it.

Cons: after I rebooted once the drive is no longer recognized, cant decide whether to exchange it or try a different product. The price would be pretty good if the thing worked.
