4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice NAS when on sale

Pros: Snagged this when it was $145 with a $15 promo code, net price $129, great deal. Works well, but does seem a little slow on read/write. I am connected via a gigabyte switch, so it is likely the drive is not a 7200 rpm one. Easy to map directly to the drive via IP without using the software. I have not used the backup software that came with the unit, but I have used some freeware backup software that should work fine.

Cons: Price now is listed at $189.99 plus $4.99 shipping, common Newegg! I have found the unit lost connection on a few occasions and had to do a hard restart. At least one of those times followed a brief power outage. That might account for problems with backups people have mentioned.

Other Thoughts: This is a great NAS at the price I paid. But at the current price, I would look for my own enclosure and my own hard drive.

1 out of 5 eggsBeaware of EMC customer support

Pros: The Newegg return policy.
Thank you Newegg for waving the restocking fee and the return postage.
You are really Eggxelent

Cons: Wasn't able to do a single back up.

Other Thoughts: I wasn't able to do a backup. Iomega provided good tech support to rule out the hardware, but when it was time to look into the included backup software (EMC Retrospect Express HD 2.5), they told me that EMC has sold that business to Roxio, that they don't support it any more and that I had to contact Roxio. I did contact Roxio, and an automated voice response told me that I have to pay $69.95, to talk to a person......
I DON'T THINK SO..... RETURN TO SENDER !!!!!!!

Here is the error msg. I know that it might be a simple solution, but I wasn't going to pay the extra $$ for that or any subsequent issues.

Manufacturer Response:

Thanks for the feedback - Iomega does offer an alternative for backing up your home computers to your Home Media Network Hard Drive. Our QuikProtect software is very simple to use, and you can download it free-of-charge from our Protection Suite. www.iomega.com/protection

5 out of 5 eggsNIce network HD at a good price!

Pros: Good price. Fairly straightforward setup. Speedy shipment from Newegg with intact and completely undamaged packaging :)

Cons: If you want any information on the software, you have to use the manual on the CD. Even the iPod and iPhone came with some paper instructions...

Other Thoughts: A couple of weird notes. On WinVista and Win7, I had to install the iomega software to access the drive. Win Vista and Win7 didn't even see the drive on the network without it. On WinXP SP3, I didn't have to install it. So much for new technology... Also, the setup software, while straightforward, is somewhat nerfed down for noobs. Not like Buffalo drive setup at all.

5 out of 5 eggsBest NAS available for the in price range

Pros: Fairly easy installation; pre-defined shared folder, iTunes and DNLA server compatibility; usb port for add-on storage device or enable as print server.

Cons: Runs slightly warm, but the fan does a reasonable job with ventilation.

Other Thoughts: I am about to order this nas drive. I have 2 Iomega 34337 1tb nas drives, both of which cost more than this 2tb nas. The 1st installation was a learning experience, the 2nd installation was a breeze. I have updated the firmware on both successfully and without backup (not recommended). 1 drive is on constantly and has been in service over a year without failure. The other nas is used for a second desktop and acts as a second print server. It is turned on only when that desltop is in use, it too has worked flawlessly for almost a year with daily power on/off.

I highly endorse these drives and Newegg has put them on sale for the better prices as long as I have been buying and using them.

The reviewer (Whiplash) stated preconfigured folders cannot be completely deleted must not have accessed the proper system screen, I have completely deleted folders on 1 of the drives.

5 out of 5 eggsNay Sayers

Pros: Quiet, extremely easy to set up. Great home office product.

Cons: Storage manager may be a little on the funky side.

Other Thoughts: This is a great product. I had been lamenting on whether or not I should purchase one. I think iomega did a great job with this, pricing is great considering other NAS devices. Transferring files is quick and the drive is pretty quiet. I am using Windows 7 and on one machine I have Vista. The software set up was incredibly easy and instant. Thank you for the great product so far iomega.

5 out of 5 eggsvery cool

Pros: Easy set up and easy to use. Folder shares are great & without any effort. Got it handle backups for 3 lap tops and found the Ftp & other features a bonus. USB port to share printter or additional HDD. Gb ethernet is a plus too.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Transfering large files regularly will probably require upgrading to Gb switch/router.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive... just a bit odd

Pros: Large capacity, FTP accessible!!!!, no third party access required though available (HUGE PLUS), plug and play. Good value. Login control is good. Giga switch NIC.

Cons: minor con.... the software interface is clunky. It is offbeat and a has preset folders..why?.. I don't know why. If a UI is made to be different from MS or Mac or Sun then it should be better... right? Anyway not a huge con but next time get rid of the default folders.

Manufacturer Response:

We're glad to hear that the Home Media Network Hard Drive offered the features that you needed! We also appreciate your question regarding the interface and the preset shares - we did extensive usability testing on the Home Media device, and we learned that creating shares was actually one of the most challenging concepts for users new to network storage. By providing a few shares (like backup, music, and pictures) and mapping them automatically, we hoped to make it easier for users to start using the new network device. If you don't need those shares, you can simply delete them and create your own.
Again, we really appreciate your feedback!
