1 out of 5 eggsIomega isn't what they used to be.

Pros: It has a USB hub built in.

Cons: A year ago, I purchased this to use as a backup / Time Machine disk for my Airport Extreme router. After having the disk stop working six months ago, they told me it had to do with the power supply, and they sent me new one. Well, six months on, I'm having the same problem again, and they decided to tell me it's a problem with the router now, and they don't support it's use with a router. As such, they won't do anything about it. I now have a rather expensive 2TB hard drive that I can't use as I had intended.

On top of all that, their technical support is hard to get to. First if your product is in warranty, they have you contact them through a "one on one" chat first, during which they walk through a script of possible solutions (as expected). Then they let you talk to someone on the phone if that doesn't solve it. Unfortunately, you have to pay $25 to get right to that point.

Needless to say, I won't be purchasing any more products from Iomega.

5 out of 5 eggscool and quiet

Pros: Noticeably cooler and quieter than previous mac mini styled external hard drives I have acquired, though this is my first one from iomega, the previous ones were from acomdata or newertech, and were ata drives inside as opposed to this one which is sata internally. Also comes with a complete collection of cables, which is nice, including both sorts of firewire connections.

Cons: Can't use the usb hub and the firewire connection at the same time.

Other Thoughts: Its the size of an old (pre-unibody) mac mini so if you have a new mac mini (I don't) it won't stack quite so nicely...

This comes formatted with a the HFS+ mac file system, and I had problems reformatting it with ext3 for use with linux. The current partition tools (c/fdisk, parted etc.) had problems reading the mac partition table for some reason, but a quick cat /dev/zero over the beginning of the disc fixed that.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: 2 TB, Firewire fast, Apple look and feel with white/aluminum mac mini style casing.

Cons: Can't use USB Hub if Firewire connected.

Other Thoughts: I rated this 3 stars before because it made more noise than I expected, however after trying some other brands who many reviewers thought were quiet, this unit was not any noisier than those. This unit also appears to spin down the drive after some time which keeps it quiet with inactivity. Some other units were always spinning. So, I am upgrading my rating to 4 stars.

3 out of 5 eggsA little disappointed

Pros: 2 TB, Firewire fast, Apple look and feel with white/aluminum mac mini style casing.

Cons: Noisier than expected. USB Hub useless if you are Firewire connected.

Other Thoughts: The unit was simple to install and ready for backups. Backup speed was good. It looks good, but I found it to be noisy when sitting on my desktop, especially next to my whisper quiet iMac. It is also noisier than an old Maxtor drive I was replacing. I also thought I was getting a bonus feature in that it has a USB hub built in. However, if you connect the drive with Firewire for data transfer you cannot use the USB Hub. If a USB cable is connected from the computer to the drive, all backups will use the USB connection instead of Firewire. Will continue to test drive for a couple days. It does have Firewire pass-thru so you still have an open Firewire port you can use.

Manufacturer Response:

You are right – you can only connect the Minimax to one interface at a time (either USB or Firewire). When connected USB, the hub is activated. In Firewire, you have two ports and can daisy-chain. Perhaps you could schedule backups – maybe overnight, or at a time when you don’t need the hub functionality – and connect the device via Firewire to get the faster interface. When you do need the hub, you can always switch to USB. This device doesn’t have an internal fan, so it should be very quiet. If you continue to hear unexpected noise, you might need to contact support.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat For a Mini

Pros: Easy connection and set up, i am using it with the fire wire and it is on fire, great transfer rates, excellent product. As always new egg delivered fast.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Got this item as an open box, and it was complete, box was opened but there was not a single component missing even the wires were wrapped in their plastic box. When i need more storage i will go for this one again.
