Powered by enterprise-class EMC LifeLine software, the StorCenter ix12-300r is available in configurations starting at 4TB, and can be expanded up to 24TB in a single array. Robust connectivity allows simultaneous multi-protocol file and iSCSI block-level access. High performance makes the StorCenter ix12-300r an ideal candidate for email and database applications or as a fast backup target. High reliability features ensure maximum availability; RAID with hot-swap drives and automatic rebuild; dual hot-swap power supplies; redundant variable-speed hot-swap chassis cooling fans.

Added drives can be brought into an existing Storage Pool or made into a new Storage Pool. Additionally, USB connected Hard Disk Drives can be attached and used as shares. The StorCenter ix12 supports read and write on Fat32, NTFS, or ext2/ext3 formatted hard disks; read only of external HFS+ formatted drives.
  • newegg RAID, UPS Support and Quad-Gigabit Ethernet Connection With on-disk data protection and organization configurable as RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10, the StorCenter ix12-300r comes with automatic RAID rebuild and hot swap drives to increase the performance, data redundancy and storage capacity. Meanwhile, the Quad-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and high-performance embedded architecture, plus link aggregation (port bonding) provide extremely high throughput. Advanced power management includes UPS support in the event of power loss.
  • newegg Included Software for Advanced Data Protection and Ease of Use Powered by EMC LifeLine software, the StorCenter ix12 includes many enterprise-class features, such as device-to-device asynchronous replication to ensure data integrity at both the source and the replication target. EMC LifeLine software also delivers robust functionality that stores, shares, manages and protects data.
  • newegg Multi-platform, Multi-technology Support The StorCenter ix12 supports PC, Mac and Linux hosts, as well as iSCSI, making it an ideal choice for any environment. It even captures and stores video from IP security cameras without a dedicated computer.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap and unreliable

Pros: High storage capacity. 4 gigbit link bonding. Multiple storage pools per device.

Cons: I own two of these in a very relatively small company (under 60 users).

Horrible performance (even on raid 10) because of slow, 5.9k rpm drives.

Drives fail often.

Both units randomly lose access to web interface and must be hard booted.

Support is non-responsive and generally provide solutions that simply aren't practical.

Other Thoughts: If you want this for your home or test environment it's fine. If your job depends on it, skip them and go with a mature, standardized product line.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible performance

Pros: - Simple to use
- Unix based
- Rsync and SSH access
- Software is functionnal

Cons: This unit has absolutely horrible write performance because of it's slow disk drives. The unit ships with cheap 5.9K RPM disk drives. (search for ST32000542AS on Newegg) Yes you read right, 5.9K RPM.

It also comes with only 4 disk craddles, all other 8 slots are loaded with fillers. You must buy the drive packs to get the disk craddles. To get faster disks and fill the unit you would need to buy an additionnal 1800$ worth of disk craddles and ditch the slow drives. Considering those disks sell for 89$ on Newegg this is a very expensive way to get performance.

It's also using Debian software RAID and has no dedicated raid controller.

Avoid this unit if you plan on doing anything write intensive, especially running any kind of virtualization with storage dedicated on this unit through iSCSI or NFS. Copying a single virtual machine image on this unit through NFS will make the unit inoperable with write speeds under 400K/s. (iowait over 80%) That is even with write-cache enabled.

Other Thoughts: If you plan on doing only SIMPLE CIFS sharing with no heavy workloads (forget big video files) and less then 10 users ; this is a good unit though I would explore other options that are way cheaper from other vendors.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, bbeausej -
Thanks for your feedback. You are correct about purchasing the sleds with disks from Iomega. We have not qualified other disks for use in the ix12-300r. If you are interested in purchasing disks independently, you might want to look at our new StorCenter px line. Those units are available fully or partially populated (all the sleds are in the unit), and we have a list of qualified disks that you can purchase.
