4 out of 5 eggsGreat back-up solution

Pros: Capacity, reliability ... and it's red!

Cons: PS3 doesn't recognize - but Sony's pretty picky and Iomega isn't unique in this regard.
I have to agree with another reviewer - that silicone shock thing is a dust magnet.

Other Thoughts: As I said in another review on a similar Iomega product, a product intended to be mobile should probably have some sort of cover/case. Price aside, having to order the case separately is tacky.
I rotate between three of these (similar - all Iomega) drives for backup and it just makes for a very elegant solution.

3 out of 5 eggsSamsung inside, encryption partition not optional

Pros: Sturdy construction, decent price (elsewhere), Samsung HM100UI drive inside (according to HDDScan)

Cons: Tacky rubber cover is lame (hello dust, dirt, etc), encryption CDFS partition not optional with no solution from Iomega

Other Thoughts: I was pretty excited with this drive, to begin with. USB 3.0 looks promising and the 930GB partition came pre-formatted with NTFS. Then came the let-down... It has a CDFS partition that is present at boot (it shows in my boot drive options), so it must be part of the firmware. I tried Acronis 10.x, along with several other HDD format tools, but that CDFS partition cannot be removed/formatted. I then queried Brady at Iomega support and his answer was, basically, if it is a Iomega USB 3.0 drive, the encryption is required/permanent and the partition cannot be removed. I would love it if I could even change & use that partition for bootable options, which I could/would use, but it is locked to such things. I don't like drives that run active content ever since my first U3 drive and, at least, SanDisk makes a utility to remove that. Come on, Iomega, give us a similar option...

Manufacturer Response:

Thanks for your comments - the partition is there to enable you to access data you have encrypted from any computer (without having to download an application, which frequently isn't an option). If you were to remove that partition, you would permanently prevent access to the hardware encryption feature on the device. We are working on a utility that will give you this option - it should be available soon on our website.

4 out of 5 eggsRugged drive appearance

Pros: 1.) Beautiful ruby red matched my wife's laptop.
2.) Appears to be rugged.
3.) Includes unique Y USB 3.0 cable (Y end is usb A type).
4.) When connected to KingWin usb3.0 card, measured over 100MB/s read with ATTO.
5.) Drive enclosure surface is more resistant to scratches.

Cons: 1.) Y cable is too short. When attached to Kingwin express card, the other type A usb connector on the other end of the Y was not long enough to reach the 2nd usb port for power. This is because all usb 3.0 express cards would stick out about 1.5 inch.

I worked around this by using the +5v dc cable that came with the Kingwin usb 3.0 card, as well as using a usb extension cord.

Other Thoughts: The usb 3.0 cord that came with the Iomega 1TB drive is soft.

However, because of the shortness of the Y cable (the Y part), using this drive on a pre-usb 3.0 laptop would be clunky; due to the need for an extension usb cable to stretch the reach of that short Y cable.

On those machines that do have usb 3.0 on board, the port is supposed to supply enough power so the Y portion would not be needed.

This drive will run on a single usb connector when running in usb 2.0 mode (Y part of cable not needed to be plugged in).
