5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems

Pros: I like this device. I got it on Cyber Monday for a steal. I use it with big name companies network media player and this device does DLNA with no issues.

Cons: Transferring via Windows is slow but FTP I was awesome.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Idea, Terribly Executited

Pros: It functions.

Cons: I read the software was terrible, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. It isn't by any means an easy setup, you have to know what you're doing. Mainly bought to use with xbox 360 but the xbox would never find it. Read on their forums and a lot of people were having this issue. The instructions written for xbox setup is ridiculously outdated which makes it hard to set up. The drive alerts you when a firmware update is available, however you have to scrounge around for an hour to find the update, or talk to tech support, then upload it to the device - even though it is supposed to go on its own.

Other Thoughts: I mainly bought this to get a bigger media drive and to be able to watch media on my tv without having to put it on a flash drive to put on my xbox. It wasn't the drive that upset me off, it was the lack of support. I imagine if the support was better all would be well, but I wasn't treated well by their support and because of that I will not recommend this product to anyone. However, I gave it 2 eggs because it still does everything it is advertised to do, just extremely difficult to manage.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello -
Thanks for the feedback! We need to update those XBOX instructions, and I appreciate the reminder. You are right - it shouldn't be difficult to find the firmware updates at all. When we release a new firmware version, the device will notify you. You can create an Iomega My Support account at that time and download the firmware from our support site by simply navigating to your product and checking the Downloads section of the page. If you registered your device, you already have a My Support account and you will be taken directly to the product page.

1 out of 5 eggsUgh!

Pros: Convenient.

Cons: Died after a few months.

Other Thoughts: It worked great for a few months, then it just decided to die on me. Lost all my data and couldn't get any help from iomega.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, JoeSnuffy -
I am very sorry to hear that you experienced an issue with your Home Media device. This is unusual - we have an excellent quality record with this product - but any mechanical device can fail. We work very hard to be sure that our drives are as reliable as possible, but it is always a good idea to keep a backup of your critical data (or use a device with two drives so you can create a RAID group to protect from a disk failure).
I am surprised to hear that you weren't able to get help from Support - we can replace the device in warranty for you.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not Buy!

Pros: The idea behind the device is great however the firmware, the drive itself, and the implementation leaves much to be desired.

Cons: Constant crashing when moving files.
Poor software at best.
Glitch prone with multiple hang-ups and dismal performance.

Other Thoughts: Overall the device simply does not work at least not as intended. It will store files and they are accessible over the internet if you move one file at a time. but even then it will crash on occasion (approx. once an hour) requiring a manual reset, which no amount of time will self-rectify overall a useless device that will cause more aggravation than worth and one that you should not waste your money on.

Now it is possible mine was defective. But I doubt it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello -
I am very sorry for the problems you've experienced with your Home Media Cloud Edition device. I can assure you that the problems you are reporting are NOT common - please do contact Tech Support to work through the issues, particularly with the crashes on transfer. They may need to replace the unit for you.
Thanks for the feedback!

4 out of 5 eggsReasonable Network Drive

Pros: I just installed this device, so I may change my mind later, but so far it's looking good. It's reasonably fast, and seems to have a reasonably complete feature set. It's got some clever features with automatically uploading pictures or videos to flickr, facebook, youtube, etc. and downloading torrents.

Cons: The software is pretty bad, they spent way too much time making it look spiffy and not enough time making sure it's actually usable. Don't buy this device unless you are willing to play around with things to get them to work.
I did have some initial network connectivity issues, but I think that was because I was running it through a cheap router I had; once I hooked it up to my main router it's looking solid.
Doesn't seem to contain backup software for Windows (so you can back up your local drive).

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, cscooper -
Thank you for your feedback on the user interface for the Home Media Cloud Edition. We actually did a great deal of usability testing and work to ensure that the device is as easy to use as possible, and we continue to refine it.
If you would like to back up your Windows computer to the Home Media, you can download Quik Protect from the Iomega Protection Suite. It is free, and is a very easy way to automatically backup your PC. Just visit www.protection-suite.iomega-web.com - you will need the serial number of your Iomega product to access the downloads.
Thanks again!
