5 out of 5 eggsCan take a bunch of IO hits

Pros: I've had this guy turned on and running on my work PC for a few months now. Directly on the hard drive I run two virtual machines (one windows, one linux) running as code building environments.

At any time, there can be between 1 to 5 simultaneous builds running.

So far the drive has lasted this long with no errors during heavy usage. File IO seems pretty quick (at least as fast as my workstation's internal drive), although not nearly as fast as my consumer-level SATA-III drive at home.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: All in all, I would recommend this drive for anyone that needs a workhorse that'll stick around for a while.

3 out of 5 eggsIomega 2TB ext drive

Pros: fast, clean looking case, light not blinding bright like some others
samsung drive inside, fast on usb 2 bus.

Cons: this has a 5400 sata II (3.0gbs) drive inside, and therefore will not reach usb 3.0 speeds.

Other Thoughts: this has a "SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 HD204UI 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" drive inside (paste into the newegg search function) . i bought this on sale locally for a good price.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap and usb 3.0

Cons: constantly loses communication with computer, needs total system shutdown to reestablish connection with pc.

Other Thoughts: I use this as a media storage drive and it works about 90% of the time, the other 10% requires multiple reboots to get the drive working again. Total PITA when you have to get up and reboot everything, unplug the drive completely and reconnect it all, often multiple times.

Manufacturer Response:

This is not characteristic for this drive. Please contact our Support team immediately so we can do additional research - the Support team can escalate the case to our Quality team.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Large storage space for the price. Drives are very quiet.

Cons: Seem to get quite hot, quickly. We have about 30 1.5 to 2TB drives that we work from, and these seem to be much warmer to the touch than the WD Element, or Samsung Story Station.

Other Thoughts: Bought these when they were on sale, have had 1 failure out of 6. Not bad but not great. I do worry about the heat with extended use. Will buy them again if they are cheaper than the other drives I mentioned, but I would go with something else if the price is the same. Newegg took care of the RMA quickly on the dead drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, DaTeas -
Thank you for the feedback. I want to assure you that we have conducted extensive testing on the thermal behavior of all of our desktop hard drives. The outer enclosure will get slightly warm, since we use the enclosure as part of the heat dissipation of the device. Even in a very hot environment, the operating temperature of these drives does not exceed the temperature specs for the internal drive.
Thanks again!

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible failure rate

Pros: USB 3.0 speed and large capacity.

Cons: First of all we purchased 15 of these for disaster recovery. 5 of the 15 failed in the first week very minimal use. There is a proprietary "virtual cd installation" that causes many issues with Acronis software. Make sure to use the Iomega encryption tool to remove it. Would recommend another brand of external hard drives or build your own. Tech support is online and mediocre at best.

Other Thoughts: In the many years of working with hard drives of all generations, never seen this high of failure rate within the first week.

Manufacturer Response:

I would agree - 30% failure rate is absolutely unacceptable, and we certainly have not seen anything close to that failure rate on this or any other product (we're generally under 1%). I think something unique might have occurred with this implementation, especially since you mention issues with Acronis. Please contact our Support team immediately so we can do additional research - the Support team can escalate the case to our Quality team.
