2 out of 5 eggsEntry Level NAS

Pros: Paid $650 last year before the floods...
5 gigs after RAID 5
Uses 9k jumbo frames

Cons: Uses Hitachi 2TB Hard Drives x 4
Slow performance
Apps don't work correctly, even with updates

Other Thoughts: Had to flash Linksys router to use Tomato in order to use 9k Jumbo Frames to increase performance. If more than 2 HD's fail out at one time the whole RAID is dead. Wanted a cheap alt to my 4 TB (2.9tb RAID 5) WD 1tb x4 soft raid (tler). Will wait for Qnap to come down in price and buy something better.

Manufacturer Response:

Slee02,

Thank you for your comments. We will pass them along to our product development team.

1 out of 5 eggsIomega StorCenter ix4-200d

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Undependable.

Other Thoughts: I bought this NAS, the 4TB version as a back-up box. I have had nothing but problems. I lost one drive with in a month. The loops required to get it covered under warranty was going to take too much time, I needed the drive. It was easier to purchase another identical replacement drive. The NAS consistently loses contact with drives which forces me to re-seat them, causing the box to rebuild, wiping the drives clean. This happens no less then once a month. I almost need a back-up for my back-up! I would NEVER purchase this again.

Manufacturer Response:

We are very sorry to hear your issues with the IX4-200d. We have had very little complaints on this unit and we would like for you to contact our support department who can assist you with repair or warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Fast, Simple, Lots of features including Active Directory.

Cons: Not on sale anymore. It was $599.99 ($649.99 - $50.00). Might have been a mistake? I will buy another one if it goes down again.

2 out of 5 eggsOK, but slow, and poor interface

Pros: A lot of network-enabled storage for a good price.

Cons: It is slow. Even though it comes with gigabit ports, I have not been able to get speeds anywhere close to the port speed. Direct Transfers are slow as well. The interface has much to be desired, you can't just move files on the device itself, and trying to do it via a network share will take you days, instead you have to do a copy job, then delete the files after copied (assuming you have enough room).

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, eh...
Thanks for the feedback on the ix4-200d Cloud Edition device. As you know, the performance of the device will be affected by many different factors. You can turn off any services that you aren't currently using, and you may see some performance improvements on the device and through your network.
In terms of moving files to the device - I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Since it is a network device, you will be using the network to transfer files, and the performance will depend on your network configuration.
I'd suggest you contact Tech Support so they can assist you with performance tweaks to get the most out of the device.
Thanks again!

4 out of 5 eggsCan't beat it for the price

Pros: Lots of cheap storage
Great interface and LCD display
Runs as RAID 5 w/5TB free

Cons: Early models had early drive failure problems, but the new ones seem OK.
