Iomega Personal Cloud is a proprietary, web-based computing architecture that connects your Iomega StorCenter network storage devices to other individuals and/or devices via the Internet. Unlike public and private cloud applications, Iomega’s Personal Cloud technology is completely self-owned – so the content and accessibility is always under your control.
  • newegg Easy Storage Expandability Add storage capacity by simply connecting external USB hard disk drives. Empty bays are fitted with a drive carrier that can accommodate 2.5" and 3.5" drives. Drives are available from Iomega or may be purchased from the approved vendor list.
  • newegg RAID, SSD, UPS Support and Dual-Gigabit Ethernet Connection With on-disk data protection and organization configurable as RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 5+1 (hot spare), and 6, the StorCenter px6-300d comes with automatic RAID rebuild and hot swap drives to increase the performance, data redundancy and storage capacity. It can be fitted with solid state drives to boost performance for IO intensive applications. Meanwhile, the Dual-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and high-performance embedded architecture provide extremely high throughput. Advanced power management includes UPS support in the event of power loss.
  • newegg Multi-platform, Multi-technology Support The StorCenter px6-300d supports PC, Mac and Linux, as well as iSCSI, making it an ideal choice for any environment. iSCSI target provides block-level access for the most efficient storage utilization, especially for backup, database and email application performance. It can be used in parallel with file-level storage access via CIFS/NFS. Includes support for SCSI-3 persistent reservations.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Fast and reliable NAS. Great integration with Active Directory. Options for teaming NICs for load balancing and throughput are great features. Installed @ client site and took backup time from 30 days to 12 hours.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsSoftware Raid - Not Perfect - Not bad either

Pros: Good hardware fit and finish. External Power supply easily replaced in the future. Nice LCD, informative. Super quiet fans - They run as slow as they can and it is quiet.

Cons: 1) LACP is problematic. Most reboots require pulling link on the ethernet cable to bring the LACP bundle up and make the device reachable. 2) Array rebuild process has hung on multiple tests. Had to reboot to continue the rebuild. 3) Software RAID writes 3rd party partitions to your drives. There is a system Raid0 mirror across all drives on partition0, then a partition1 on all drives and finally your space begins at parition3. I guess this is just a consequence of software raid and not really iomega. 4)I'm using Seagate 1TB drives on the HCL with 4k sector size. The iomega sees the drives as 4k drives but chooses to write 512logical/physical sectors to each device. I have a service request opened with iomega to address, but this is disappointing.

Other Thoughts: This is a good SAN device. I don't use it for the frivolous features like print serving and facebook uploading. I needed a SOHO disk array I could use iSCSI to connect to and run multiple VMWare clients from. For this purpose it has direct block level iscsi access which is more than many other NAS devices in this pricerange. Iomega is a good brand name, they've been around for a while, so hopefully they will update support for 4k sectors (huge CON there with these big drives today). Also not really a con, but the SATA is the 3Gbps version, not SATA2. This is most likely a non-issue, since the software raid would have a hard time pushing 3Gbps anyway.

1 out of 5 eggsSlow, but Great Features... if you can get it to work.

Pros: Nice GUI, Iomega Personal Cloud, Attractive Form Factor, Well Designed Hot-swap bays, Tech Support Speaks English

Cons: Less than brilliant tech support, slow boot time, slow Read/Write Access, limited number of USB ports, Print Server has issues, Only VERY SPECIFIC Hard Drives Work (only 2x 7,200 RPM drives on a VERY short list), Empty SODIMM does not support an additional PC3-10600 RAM chip

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, jtr02a -
Thanks for your feedback on the StorCenter px6. We support widely available hard disks from different manufacturers, and we are regularly adding more qualified disks.
In addition, we invite you and all our customers to post information in our forums on other disks that you have tried successfully. We are also interested to learn if you find disks that experience issues - sharing specifics on the forums helps not only Iomega, but the whole user community. There is no technical reason that similar drives won't be usable in the device.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Unit

Pros: 1. Good performance
2. Easy to setup most features
3. Lots of features

Cons: 1. I had one lockup which I had to power cycle to clear.
2. Still a limited number of supported drives although a few have been added since it's release.

Other Thoughts: I use this for my home VMware lab, media streaming to my TV, file storage, and various other things. It works well and has good performance. I imagine it would be great for most home labs or SMBs needs and the ability to use SSDs is nice.

Side Note - First update was recently released.
