1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Hardware, OS, and Support DO NOT BUY

Pros: Simple to setup

Cons: Terrible interface with few fine tuning options. No Shell access. Have now had two horrible experiences with their customer service. First time took over a month to simply RMA a failed drive with drive sled. Second is a permission issue that occurred after a firmware update. They said if I roll it back they will not support it. It has now been 7 weeks and very little response. I call twice a week and get a note that your level 3 is working on it. Meanwhile our production is slowed and access is limited. If yo need to use this for any kind of serious work DO NOT BUY THIS.

1 out of 5 eggsDied. Three months and still waiting for replacement

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Died in under 30 days from install, waiting almost three months (no joke) for a replacement unit.

Contacted Iomega support through their website. This was back in October. They told me they would ship a new unit.

It's now almost January and still no replacement unit. When I ask for an update on their support website, I get a "it's in progress".

Iomega = a big mistake.

Other Thoughts: Don't do business with a company who has no sense of loyalty to their customers.

I bet you this device disappears in the next few months, which is tech industry's way of killing off products that perform poorly.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect VMware iSCSI solution!

Pros: Fast and easy to configure through its web GUI. I bonded (802.3ad) the two Gb NICs AND configured with Jumbo Frames (mtu=9000) connected to a Cisco 2970 switch (only $200 off online bidding website) and consistently get over 200Mbps throuput on a RAID 5 config! Remember you'll need to do the same on your servers or in my case VMware ESXi 5 hosts as you'll only be as fast as your slowest link.

Cons: When I first purchased this I was denied a rebate (see my previous review). Turned out the company IOmega hired to handle the rebates messed up. An IOmega rep corrected the issue and even followed up after I recieved my $200 rebate!

Other Thoughts: One guy complains about having to enter Volume sizes in Megabytes instead of Gigabytes. Really dude!
And don't listen to the moron that used DHCP on his iSCSI, why would you do that, if you loose your DHCP server then nothing else can access your iSCSI. Just Static them and be done with it. No reliability issues after 3 months use and is very quiet.

1 out of 5 eggsEpic Failure. Product and Support

Pros: Attractive, Hot Swap Drives, Dual NICs.

Cons: This product is an abysmal failure. Has the specifications of a rock star with the reliability of a politician.

First unit was dead out of the box. Iomega support, after 30 minutes on hold waiting for a tech who then put me on hold for another 30 minutes, said to return it for a replacement.

Initial set up was a nightmare. When you configure the storage Iomega makes you enter a volume/share in Megabytes. Not Gigabytes, but Megabytes! So you need to manually convert gigabytes to megabytes. This is more cumbersome than necessary.

The unit was then up and running for 2 months when it started reporting "Fan 2 Failed". Once again, the dreaded call to Iomega. Waited 35 minutes for a technician, who once again put me on hold for more time than he spoke with me, who told me, "oh, wait, there's a second fan inside the unit?" Wow, confidence AND knowledge on the same call. He went on to tell me its a known firmware bug, I can ignore it. I asked him if he was for real, to which he told me, "or you can open the unit up and inspect the fan to see if it's spinning".

So now I have a unit with a blinking red light, a message "Fan 2 Failed", and Iomega telling me, "nah, don't worry. If you insist, though, we will send you a refurbished unit". Ah, yes... send me someone else's problems.

I'd stay away from this product until you see some positive reviews.

1 out of 5 eggsPromises a lot, delivers a little

Pros: Compact, Easy to Setup

Cons: Slow, Unreliable

Other Thoughts: Despite the promised specs, the product and Iomega support have been overwhelmingly disappointing.

Initially, the device was easy to setup and average throughput for a single sustained transfer was 75MB/s over Gigabit LAN. Unfortunately, total throughput dropped to ~30MB/s with more than one device connected.

I tried configuring NIC bonding using load balancing, but performance actually decreased. Not willing to give up, I purchased a Cisco switch (SLM2008T) capable of Link Aggregation (LAG) and proceeded to configure the switch and StorCenter for LAG. After the StorCenter reset, it would no longer pick up an IP address from the DHCP server on the network. Thinking I might have a bad network cable, I unplugged one of the cables and, immediately, the StorCenter picked up an IP address. I decided to back out the advanced configuration settings and start over, but suddenly, both NICs on the StorCenter now had the same MAC address, even though they were no longer bonded.

I logged a support ticket online and received a response 3 days later recommending a Factory Reset. After taking a data backup (the StorCenter still worked using a single NIC at this point), I performed the Factory Reset, only to discover that the device then failed to pick up an IP address under any circumstance. At this point, I phoned Iomega Support, but the analyst was stumped and had no suggestions. The incident was then escalated to a senior analyst, but I received no updates for 4 days. Finally, I was contacted to arrange a replacement device to be shipped. I received the tracking number 5 days later, but the package still hasn't been shipped.

Also, I found out in a firmware release note that there's an existing issue that applies to all StorCenter products where "you may experience a decrease in network performance" "if you bond network interface cards (NICs) on your Iomega StorCenter device and are running the device in a gigabit LAN". I can no longer return the product as I've had it for almost 2 months and have already mailed in the rebate request. Do not buy if NIC bonding is important to you.

Also, the rebate process is a nightmare. Iomega repeatedly refused to honor the rebate until I sent in every single UPC on the box.

1 out of 5 eggsiomega's rebate invalid

Pros: Product works well as an iSCSI setup. Boot ESXi 5 and VM's off of it, no problem. Raid 5 performance is good.

Cons: iomega won't honor the rebate. I gave them everything they asked for and they came back that NewEgg Business is an invalid retailer. You can't get them live either. The phone number they give for rebates is an automated response only!

Other Thoughts: It even says 'NewEgg' on the rebate form! I think they're scamming people.

5 out of 5 eggsNice RAID NAS

Pros: Low Cost, multiple RAID options, easy connection to Windows Computers, easy setup, easy back up including cross network backup.

Cons: Pricey, but much less expensive with $150 rebate! You can build a Windows Home Server or Windows Small Business Sever Essentials unit for about 2/3rds the price. Those are not plug and play!

Other Thoughts: I replaced a failing Iomega Storcenter ix2-200 (pre cloud) with a px4-300d. It works well, and the back up, plus cross network backup options, work extremely well. I still use the ix2-200 as a NAS at home for offsite business storage and they talk to each other!

I built the Windows Home Server and Windows Small Business Server Essentials units for about $500 each including drives. But the SMSE is no where near as easy to setup as the Iomega unit.

Only issue I have had since the software update was that Windows Explorer does not interact well with the interface. This is solved by using Chrome!

No issues with Windows 7. All my machines are Win 7 Pro

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after Numerous updates

Pros: 1. RAID 5
2. Easy Setup
3. iSCSI
4. VMware esxi 5.0 certified

Cons: Failed after a week. I assumed high quality being VMware certified but even after every update/reset will not hold network connectivity or RAID config. My ESXI host keeps losing connections and then I cannot ping or access Iomega. I am RMAing for another. Perhaps it was a bad egg.

Other Thoughts: I will post an updated review if this next run turns out better.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid NAS

Pros: I have installed this product for my client and it has delivered solid performance on day to day bases. They have reduced there cost to 1/3. It provided remote connection to the office, virtuallization of their desktops and servers, in house data backup and remote backup through the cloud.

The RAID 5+1 Hot spare is a over $1000 option on other EMC NAS system. This is a wonderful feature that comes with this unit for Free.

Cons: I have used other EMC NAS system in the server environment and for the price of Iomega EMC 300D you will have the same storage and more features.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am satisfied with the performance and I do recommend to anyone Home, Mid or Small business less than 100 people
