The NSS6000 from Linksys is an intelligent chassis designed to make network storage management easier. It has an embedded processor and Linux 2.6 OS built in. This feature lets you use all of the drive capacity for storage. The embedded controller also allows up to 75 concurrent CIFS users.

The four drive bays can be populated with SATA drives. In addition to the standard 0, 1, 5, and 10 RAID levels, the NSS6000 also supports RAID 1+Spare and 5+Spare. If there’s a drive failure the data is secure giving you time to install another drive.

The NSS6000 can operate in stand alone mode or be integrated into a Linksys One network. It also supports Microsoft's Distributed File System and Active Directory Service. You can also increase capacity by using Network-based Storage Aggregation which distributes the RAID set over multiple NSS devices.

1 out of 5 eggsBIG trouble!

Pros: Good for ONLY basic file storage

Cons: long as you never put a lot of files in a single folder, don't need to copy large folders/shares from or to it, and don't need to store backups to it or restore them from it. Oh and so long as you don't mind slow transfers on Vista machines.

Other Thoughts: Replaced once. Reloaded three times dus to power loss (yes it often kills the box, MUST have UPS). Managed to move a large folder to it, but can't get a simple copy to move the folder back to another machine.

4 out of 5 eggsNeeds Some Work

Pros: It's pretty quick and easy to setup. Not much different than a linksys router. Firmware is open source which is a plus!

Cons: You need to obtain SSH access in order to turn off the rootsquash option on NFS mounts.

Other Thoughts: Bridging a jumper on the side of CPU enables SSH access once the system is up and running. To get root access you have to modify rc.local inside the firmware before uploading.

1 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: Cheap storage

Cons: VERY slow. 12MByte/sec is all it could handle on a dedicated GigE switch with jumbo frames enabled.
Link aggregation did not work. Linksys tech support didn't even know what this product was.

Other Thoughts: Thoughts? Glad I could send both units and the 750gb HDD's back for a full refund where I purchased them.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Very Well

Pros: Inexpensive way to add a tremendous amount of storage to your network. I added 4 500gig drives, set them up as a RAID 5 array, and set up group access via Active Directory. The system functions flawlessly. Despite what another reviewer has stated, the 1.0 firmware does support group permissions as I found out before I upgraded it to the latest firmware. It also allows permissions by device (PC, server, etc.), further increasing the flexibility of the unit.

Cons: Manual does leave a bit to be desired on some advanced topics.

5 out of 5 eggsit does groups

Pros: It's a very nice product. Unlike what the below reviewer wrote, it does have group permissions. I suggest (as does the documentation) you upgrade the firmware once you get it. I always do that for all products I purchase.

Cons: 75 concurrent user limit... my understanding is this is restricted due to the memory supplied. I wonder if upgrading the memory would resolve this...

2 out of 5 eggsWait to Buy - Does not support group permissions

Pros: Definately well made.
Specs are good.
UI is very intuitive so setup is easy.

This is a major flaw in a NAS device....
Q. Where would you expect to use a NAS device?
A. In a workgroup environment!
Linksys tech support acknowledges the problem with the current firmware. Check for firmware newer than V1.09 (3/9/2007) on Linksys website before purchasing.

Other Thoughts: Really dissapointed that Linksys (a Cisco company) would release a product in this state.
