5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Affordable, solid materials, looks sleek and clean, so many connection options and comes with all of the cables.

Cons: The stand for it is kind of cheap and doesn't actually connect to the device, the drive just site on top of the stands.

Comes online a little slower than I'd like via FireWire 800 to my MacBook Pro.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent drive. I purchased it at $230ish and I think anyone purchasing it now is getting an even better deal. Transfer times are optimal, the lights inside are cool, and it looks great next to the MacBook Pro.

Cons: while it worked. i've had this for almost 13 months, to the day. today i powered it on and it died on me, taking all my movies, music, and media projects with it. i WAS pleased with it, not any more.

2 out of 5 eggsMine just died

Pros: While it lasted it was nice, quiet, cool, and fast.

Cons: It literally just died and it's been 3 weeks over a year so I really doubt that the company will replace/repair it.

Also, it sucks when it dies and takes 400GB worth of data with it. It sucks a lot.

1 out of 5 eggsFantom MDC500 - DEAD

Pros: Cool looking drive. Heavy. Durable Metal Case. Cooling fan. Nice selectrion of interfaces - 1394a, 1394B, USB2.

Cons: I had this thing for 1 week. Worked fine at first. Now, when I plug it in, Windows says it is not formatted. When I try to reformat it, Windows says it cannot be formatted. I have tried it on several computers (even my Debian box) with the same results. I can hear the drive trying to operate but no dice.

Another thing I found odd; When I took it out of the package, the insides knock around. Not rattle but knock. It appears the internal mounting hardware is not secured well.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this if you are looking for reliability. Also, the internal drive is a Western Digital. Maybe that explains the failure.
