Excellent bargain and quality
- Pros: This is an excellent hard drive no matter how one looks at it. I originally owned a Fantom Drives 160GB external, but it failed in August, after three years of very consistent use. I came back to Fantom Drives for their budget-friendly prices and reliability. Where as my old drive did fail, causing me to lose a lot of cherished data, it was by my fault alone that I didn't have anything backed up. I bought two of these 500GB beauties, one for every day use, and the other as a back-up to the first. When these fail (as is inevitable, all drives fail eventually!) I will be coming back to Newegg and Fantom Drives for their replacements!
- Cons: None!
- Other Thoughts: Anyone who expects hard drives to last forever is insane, and anyone who doesn't have back-ups for their hard drives is a fool (including myself, though I have since learned the error of my ways!). Considering how little these drives cost and my experience with their reliability, there's no reason not to buy at least two.
Additionally, I never did send in for my MIR, but simply because I'm a touch lazy/forgetful, and never got around to it. But really, these drives are less than most big-name drives without any rebates anyway! No big loss, man.
Fantom Failure
- Pros: Cheap, Compact, Good while it lasted
- Cons: My drive just died. No sign that it was on its way out. Sudden Heart Attack.
- Other Thoughts: Next time i will opt for a better drive. You get what you pay for...
Another failed unit for me - not reliable.
- Pros: Inexpensive, does not power down to a power save mode, which is important if you are using this for a DVR drive.
- Cons: Poor quality - high failure rate.
- Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for less than a year hooked up to my Moxi DVR box as an external hard drive for extra storage. Last week my DVR started showing that it was nearly full.
I checked and this was because the Fantom EHD had failed. It was in a cool dry place with plenty of airflow. It just failed. I won't be buying Fantom anymore.
