5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drive

Pros: Just the right size for what I need, for now anyway. Its great to buy a drive, external for that matter that is Mac formatted and not having to format it before I use it. It looks awesome, sleek like the iMac or mini Mac with the brushed aluminum. The casing is very solid.

Cons: The fan is a little loud. Im using it to store my iTunes library, although when the TV is on, I can not hear the fan.

Other Thoughts: The fan should be temperature controlled to where it would only run if the drive is getting too hot.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good size, quiet, so far reliable.

Cons: Heat sink gets hot. If you have pets or kids, make sure to put it in a hard to reach location. The LED light is far too bright. Every time it flashes, it looks like someone is taking pictures in my room. I had to cover it with electrical tape.

3 out of 5 eggsNoisy!

Pros: Looks really nice. Has esata, firewire 400/800 and USB.

Cons: For heavens sake this thing is stupid noisy for the price. <--- for the price... If this drive were $100 cheaper I'd understand, but it's literally one of the most expensive drives on the market and promoted as the best. It's just too noisy. I have 4 case fans on my recently built case and this drive actually pushes out more noise than 4 120 fans, a 140, and the GPU fan put together.

Other Thoughts: I really try to push for quite systems, and this was just a sacrafice to get the best quality. Others talked about noise being a little bit of an issue, well coming from iMac computers to a quite case I just built, this takes the award for noise pollution. I will try to sell locally and replace with some internal 3tb drives when I can. It is actually competing with the condenser on the back of my fridge in the same room...

4 out of 5 eggsOverall great buy.

Pros: Really fast for an external and looks great.

Cons: The light is annoying. I often keep something in front of it.
When considering the price this thing is WAY too noisy, especially since it's marketed towards mac users who have quite computers.
Vibrates pretty good.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's a great buy. Especially if you are a videographer or photographer. Looks and quality it really is up there. The noise and light are really annoying though and they should have done more about it at this price point.

4 out of 5 eggsProfessional 3TB external drive lives up to reputation

Pros: Excellent storage capacity and file transfer/streaming speeds.
Good collection of options for I/O interfacing (USB 2, firewire and esata).
Cool look/professional appearance of product in silver aluminum case.

Cons: Esata can be a bit tricky/unstable(see other thoughts).
No USB 3 :(. (maybe in future products from G-Tech)

Other Thoughts: Really excellent drive, great looking and fast both in terms of data throughput, streaming and file transfer. Had no problem formatting this drive, took maybe 10 seconds tops in Windows 7 Pro 64 using disk management as per G-Tech's website instructions. Great specs for storage capacity and hard disc rpm speed is great at 7200. Runs a little warm unless its being used for large data transfers and is pretty quiet.

A few problems: the esata functionality of the drive can be a bit of a problem. In my PC through my Intel mobo's built-in esata ports the drive has a tendency to hang up after 2-2.5 hours use. After researching the problem, it seems that G-Drives are more compatible with discrete high quality PCI cards, so caveat emptor if esata functionality is important for you(if it is google it and figure out which esata PCI is best for your rig).

Unfortunately this drive was made before the advent of USB 3 so can't take advantage of that but has USB 2 functionality.

5 out of 5 eggsA brilliant drive, but requires prep for Windows

Pros: very fast, multiple connection options (and the cables for each connection type are included), aluminum housing is both aesthetically pleasing and improves heat transfer from the drive.

Cons: Preformatted for Mac, so yay if you are a Mac user, but be prepared to do serious reformatting if you are a Windows user.

Other Thoughts: This is a fantastic drive, and if you are a Mac user you can just connect it and go. For Windows however, you will need to delete the existing partitions on the drive (the EFI partition will require deletion via the diskpart command line tool), and then do a low-level format of the entire drive, which takes about 60 hours. I found that initially connecting the drive via USB or Firewire kept Windows from plunging into endless drive polling while doing the partition deletion and formatting. Once the drive is paved with NTFS, the SATA connection seems to give the best performance, and the performance is among the best I've seen on an external drive. Overall I'm very happy with it - just be prepared for the upfront work if you plan on using it with Windows.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid, reliable

Pros: We've owned a bunch of drives over the years, and they seem to hold up pretty well. We have a fleet of about 15 of these, and in the past 2 years, only one of them has died (knock on wood).

These solid, metal enclosure is fantastic. eSATA connection is very fast, and is also reliable. Always mounts in Mac OS 10.6.8

Cons: External power supply. The fact that these drives can't be bus-powered is a minor inconvenience.

Other Thoughts: While I really despise the software-RAID (4+ bay) products that G-Tech makes, but these drives are actually quite great.

5 out of 5 eggsSpeed!

Pros: Using 1394b, getting as close to 3 Gbps as possible. Using it as my backup drive for my Mac Pro. 2Tb transfered in less than 4 hours. Super quite.

Cons: The front light can be annoying. Pricey, but worth it.
