3 out of 5 eggsNeeded something wireless to review

Pros: 500 GB of hard drive space,
WIFI access with external battery or USB Charger (did not know this when I bought it, thought it HAD a battery in it.)
WIFI does allow multiple devices to play multiple different videos at the same time.
Only gets hot when watching movies, it does get warm when viewing photos, but all externals get hot with continued use like copying and retrieving. this got REALLY hot watching videos though.
USB2 attachment
Ethernet Port

Cons: GET VERY HOT, so hot, that it will interfere with video your watching. I was watching a 2 hour movie and 80 minutes into the movie, the video "HD signal lost style", blocks and instant freezes, very annoying, until it stopped, my only course to fix is to disconnect the WIFI of the Ipad Air, then reconnect. This would allow me to get another 10 minutes of the movie in, and would have to repeat again.

From a hotel, I added an ice pack to the top side of the drive with the bottom facing up. I was able to get 3 hours of continuous video streaming in then, the air ports on the bottom of the drive do not vent enough heat out. Which is sad, but expected for the price.

I won't be able to watch movies for very long in the car unless the drive can be mounted to an AC port to cool it down.

I could have sworn the advertisement said it had a 2000+ mA battery in it, that would at least explain the weight, it is a chunky box for only a drive and mobo card inside it. Fortunately, I invested in a 10KmA battery before I got this device.

Other Thoughts: I'd still have bought this knowing it didn't have a battery. I needed the experience for a friend with several tablets they have cause they wanted me to fix an XP computer with a virus, and I talked them into just copying the data off to an external drive then ditch the computer since they never use it. This would just allow all their tablets to access it at the same time too.

5 out of 5 eggsThey fixed pricing so this is a great item

Pros: Allows multiple connections to created wifi hotspot. Has a built in 500 Gb hard drive. Small form factor (2.5" drive). Allows pas through internet access when connected to a network.

Cons: Must be plugged in (either with adapter, portable battery or to a device) to work (no internal battery on this).
Setup can be tricky . (You must have a computer with wifi access - NOT ETHERNET - in order to setup this device).

Other Thoughts: I have now been using this for a few weeks and its is exactly what I have been looking for for years (didn't want to spend $ hundreds for a device).
Now that they fixed the pricing SNAFU this a great device at a good price.

4 out of 5 eggsgood product, price is bait and switch

Pros: Good little device to use as a portable (semi) wifi network to stream content to devices like tablets and phones. (Needs to either be plugged in or have a battery attached to it).
Once setup its dead simple to use.

Cons: Price, they got me once, not this time, its a vendor bait and switch they advertise one price but when you put it in cart its $15 more.
The setup on this thing can be a bit complicated (needs a computer that has wifi access to the internet (NOT a wired ethernet connection, that won't work).

3 out of 5 eggsnot great but does what it advertises

Pros: does technically act as a portable wireless access point for internet if you have a wired connection available.

does allow you to stream media via the mobile app

can function as a usb drive

only got it because it came free with purchase of the router; probably would never buy it on my own--too many other little issues to overcome first. would say that it is a good early iteration for what they are trying to accomplish.

Cons: limited mobility because you need a hard line internet connection.

USB 2 only
as a HD is kinda small these days

would like a user interface when access data more like a dropbox situation.

can only work as a powered device. need external battery or plug.

3 out of 5 eggsWhen using as a USB storage drive...

Pros: Can be used as a USB e.g. backup drive, then accessed from your iGizmos.

Cons: On at least my PC, even connecting the included USB cable to two (2) USB ports does not provide enough current to spin the hard drive--gotta use an AC (or 3rd party DC) power supply with the included power cable (round pin).

Other Thoughts: Following-up to point-out to fellow neweggers that when I try the two-USB plug-in cable to my G-CONNECTS using the front panel connectors on my PC, the hard drive doesn't get enough juice to work properly. I recommend to all that they play it safe and always plug-in to AC power when making a USB connection e.g. to move files back/forth. My drive was making ticking sounds, not appearing in Windows Explorer, until I plugged-in that cube-with-special-cable the device comes with.

3 out of 5 eggsQuirky device--be sure you know how you want to use it!

Pros: Pretty cool feature list.

Cons: The documentation didn't help me much to understand it--I had to play with it a lot first.

Other Thoughts: The G-CONNECT's primary purpose is storage, almost 500GB of it, for iGizmos that won't hold all your stuff. It then functions as a WiFi server to not only your iDevices but any other networked gear i.e. PCs. It has an Ethernet port which, when connected to a LAN with web access, makes it a Hotspot for WiFi clients. This port normally runs at 100Mbps but becomes 1Gbps when WiFi is switched-off, which you'd do if you wanted to map it as a network drive. Finally, its USB port plugs to a PC (or Mac I guess) turning it into an external USB drive.

Pitched as a WiFi Sharing device, it gives multiple users access to its media, but also is a way to take your large media files e.g. Movies with you on the road, for access from your iPhone or iPad, though it seems to me that if you travel a lot and have a laptop computer, wouldn't you just store these on the computer? My interest in acquiring it was to be able to use it as a backup system, one where I'd back-up my critical files to it, place it into a storage safe, and in an emergency I could access these files from any of my iDevices, without having to have a computer to get access to them. It appears it will serve that purpose.

The product has some quirks. Its WiFi sets-up to 176.16.0.x, I suppose so it would never interfere with a normal user's "anything". The Ethernet port gets its address from your DHCP server (router) and once you've discovered that you can access G-CONNECT's webserver from any browser with it. Two passwords are needed: first a WiFi password for its built-in WPA2-PSK (n-speeds are very very fast) and an Admin password for access to innards. Guest access is available via the same WiFi password. Using the "external USB drive" capability requires that you power OFF then connect the USB cable at which time the drive powers ON by itself and pops-up on your PC as another drive. You should Safely Remove the thing before disconnecting from Windows.

People are complaining the unit doesn't have a battery. I have no problem with this though I suppose if you wanted to watch a movie on an airplane you'd be in trouble--do jets have power plugs these days? I haven't flown in a Looong time.

A serious problem for many will be that the drive is formatted as FAT32 which means "no files >4Gb" and problems for HD movies. It can be reformatted to HFS+ (Mac) and overcome this limitation as I understand it, but NTFS means that now the Linux-based web server/management software can't work with it. I think some guys have killed their G-CONNECT devices doing this. If it were a problem for me, I'd probably format HFS+ and then use my Mediafour MacDrive PC software to access the thing from my PC--I think that would work anyway.

It has taken me a while to figure the above out, and having done so I THINK that I like this little guy--it does run real warm so I hope it lasts. At the latest sweet Newegg deal pricing I might just pick-up another one, to rotate them in-and-out of my storage safe.
