5 out of 5 eggsMust use ferrite bead USB cable

Pros: An inexpensive 2TB drive that runs fast and silent. Very reliable.

Cons: It used to freeze up, but that problem was solved with the use of USB ferrite bead cable, see below.

Other Thoughts: A USB cable with ferrite beads must be used.

When I run this drive using a cable without ferrite beads it feezes up becoming completly non-responsive. Simply by using a USB cable with ferrite beads it runs perfectly.

4 out of 5 eggsAll is well after 7 mo

Pros: High capacity, not too hot, quiet, no failures in 7 months, and I travel with this drive a lot. (knock on wood).

Cons: wish it wouldn't go to sleep, or there was some way I could change that setting. When I'm a radio DJ and I click a song to start, a 5 second delay while the drive boots up makes me look bad.

2 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: Nice metal enclosure, and quiet also. Drive itself is fine.

Cons: As usual, rebate pdf corrupt when trying to download, so no rebate for me. Just another rebate scam as usual. Not buying any hardware with a rebate, too much of a headache.

Other Thoughts: Be nice if the included stand was of the same material as the case instead of plastic, but it is still satisfactory. Why not include eSATA cable? Keep the rebate and toss in a decent cable!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Drive

Pros: Great Drive!
Cool
Quiet
Great Transfer Speeds over eSata (110 MB/s sustained)
Really well built enclosure
Small power brick (surprisingly helpful)
Looks Really Nice

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought this same model number drive about 6 months ago... My first one was much louder and hotter than this one.
If you've been waiting for any reason to buy this drive, now seems to be the time to do it.

1 out of 5 eggsFollow-Up Review

Pros: Decent price. It looks good.

Cons: I've owned this drive for over 2 months and it makes this disconcerting clicking sound whenever it spins up. It seems to spin up every 15 minutes or so whether you access the drive or not. It only clicks when it is spinning up but it does this all the time. I'm afraid to leave it turned on when I'm not accessing it and it seems only a matter of time before the drive fails. I haven't opened the case to see what kind of drive is installed for fear of voiding the warranty. I am leery of placing anything of irreplaceable value on this drive. Not the kind of feeling you want to have when you buy a 2TB external drive to store your precious data on. In the future I am sticking to a brand name external drive manufacturer like WD to assure myself I’m getting one of their drives.

Other Thoughts: Beware of the rebates on these drives. After the 10-12 week waiting period, I am still awaiting my rebate. I also keep getting the dreaded status message: "Your rebate claim has been approved. Awaiting final approval by the manufacturer. Allow 10 to 12 weeks from the date you mailed your claim to receive your rebate check." How long does final approval take? It seems they are just dragging their feet.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome, Quite, Big, and Fast

Pros: It's 2TB, and the transfer rates are just as good as internal (yay).

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: My first external hard drive was a Fantom, and it's still around after 5 years. Fantom has some good quality products.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate!!

Pros: Very reasonably priced and fairly low energy consumption. All that means NOTHING to anyone who's lost 2 or 3 TB's of data because the drive is badly engineered.

Cons: Well the major CON (in every sense of that world) is the fact that Fantom is using a Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS drive as the heart of this external. Don't have to leave this website in order to read all the bad news about Seagate's 1.5+ HDD's. Their major fail, (from a company with a great reputation in secondary storage) is now legendary. I had two 1.5TB's fail on me within a month.

Usually Fantom uses MICRONET or WD or other drives--and you never know what's inside these externals till you get them. To my dismay I find a Seagate! What made me even curious was that within a month this Fantom was making clicking noises of impending BSOD, and S.M.A.R.T already shows the drive is reaching critical mas with seek errors and an overall performance of 70%--by far the lowest of any on any of my systems. And Many Many folks are all to familiar with this whole scenario as it unfolds with these Seagate TB drives.

Other Thoughts: This Fantom was priced cheaply because Seagate is constantly dumping their garbage drives on the market at cut rate prices-how else can they move them. I'm sure Fantom got them for a song. Pity they got sucker punched. And it's also a shame that NewEgg continues to market Seagate drives of FAIL as much as they do.

Generally I like Fantom's Externals--I love the 3 interfaces (USB, Firewire, and especially eSata. But I'm already moving everything off this puppy and will negotiate HARD with Fantom to take this back and trade it out for something else. I don't intend to actually have data loss before replacing this nonsense.

3 out of 5 eggsBEWARE. You might not get the rebate

Pros: Pretty fast drive when it's connected via eSATA

Cons: - Louder than a few of my external drives and VelociRaptor drives
- did not come with an eSATA cable

Other Thoughts: I bought the drive back in 2/2010. It's mid July already and I still don't have my $20 rebate.

This is the message from the rebate status site:

"Your rebate claim has been approved. Awaiting final approval by the manufacturer. Allow 10 to 12 weeks from the date you mailed your claim to receive your rebate check."

HAHA. I am not amused.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your feedback. Please note most rebate issues can be resolved by simply sending an email to help@promoprocess.com they should respond to your inquiry within 24 hours. If you would like us to contact them on your behalf please call us at 1(800)800-DISK and we will get this matter resolved for you immediately.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!

Pros: NO

Cons: Got the drive 5 days ago. After 2 days my PC could not recognize it. Call the Fantom cust. service. “Very soft voice”, like it’s absolutely normal situation, walked me through the drive management and after confirming that computer doesn’t see the drive suggested to request RMA. Here is the statement from the RMA paper (in all capitals): MICRONET/FANTOM DRIVES IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR CUSTOMER DATA
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. IF DATA RECOVERY IS DESIRED, PLEASE SEND
THE PRODUCT TO A DATA RECOVERY FIRM.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi adp. Thank you for your feedback. It is always a frustration when a drive fails, especially when data is lost as a result. We do everything in our power to ensure that your data is returned to you subsequent to warranty service, however as a matter of course there are times where you drive (and thus data) are outside of our immediate control (i.e., in shipping to and from our service center). As such we cannot make any guarantees regarding your data throughout the course of our warranty service.

For this reason we suggest in our product manual and elsewhere that all computer users keep their valuable data on multiple separate drives.
