5 out of 5 eggsThe best one I have

Pros: I have to tell you that this HD is by far the best hard drive I have, to be honest this was my first HD and I bought it because at that time 2011 was a good deal for the money even when I was not so sure about the brand at that time now after 5year I just gonna say if I log back in to my newegg account just to make the review is because is the best. I own now two WD they are not bad bran, what I know is that even when I have take care of my precious fantom some times (5) fall from my hands I'm a tall guy so let say from 1 meter but guess what nothing has ever happen more than me crying, thinking I will lose all my data.

Now I can tell

Cons: You have to get used to the sound he makes is weird.
Some times at the begging I have troubles eject properly, but I know now was my fault because I have a iso mount and try to eject so get a error.

Other Thoughts: I totally recommend this product I don´t know if the brand was trying to get really nice review with this one first 2tb model since I have not try new versions but I would buy this one even if is used.

1 out of 5 eggsDead within four months

Pros: None, unless you can call working well for four months a "pro".

Cons: Tried to use it as a pvr extender attached to the esata port. Worked well for approximately four months, and died.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong

Pros: Reliable, Power-Saving

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive about 5 years ago (2010) and I use it for storage/backup files. I fire it on maybe monthly or so and I've never had a problem with it. Now, the speed is a little dated but eSata speeds aren't too bad.

2 out of 5 eggsOnce Worked Fine

Pros: It holds 2 TB of data and the transfer speed isn't bad since it has a 3.0 connection.

Cons: It was used for less than 2 months before it completely stopped working on me. I transferred over 500GB of data to it, and within a month after that backup was done, the drive no longer would spin. I am sure that this is the issue as it was once a fairly loud drive, but now it is completely silent.

Other Thoughts: Not worth buying if it is going to die so quickly.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 4 months of not using it

Pros: 2TB of memory - good paperweight

Cons: I bought this because I could tell my laptop was about to go Kaput (which it did) and I had a ton of movies, shows, pictures, and VERY important papers stored on my laptop. So I transferred it over to the Fantom. Worked well and everything checked out.

But than I ran into money problems and could not purchase a computer so everything that was on the Fantom stayed on the HD longer than I wanted (4 months). So 4 months went by and I turned on my Fantom maybe twice to retrieve some files. Until i was able to build my computer, I loaded the Fantom expecting to pull on my media and of course everything was corrupted.

So I owned it for about 4 months, than stored it for another 4 without much use and after 8 months total before it back useless.

Not to mention this thing is big, ugly and loud. Not worth the money

5 out of 5 eggsMy husband is a very happy man

Pros: Compact design with plug and play capability. Easy to transfer and large available storage space.

Cons: No included esata cable.

Other Thoughts: My husband received this from me for Christmas today. Not only am I a 'smart' wife for getting him a hard drive but I am a 'really smart' wife for getting him a portable one. His only complaint is that the included cable is not an ESATA and that normal SATA is not the same connector as is required. If a $3.99 cable is the biggest complaint, I think it can still be counted as a win. Straight from the box to the computer with no fuss. Runs beautifully and quiet with an indicator light that is just bright enough to be sure it is working but not so bright as to distract him, and a sleek design that sits with a stand oh so perfectly next to his other tech savvy knick knacks. I have spent the last two hours listening to gleeful (but manly) giggles and a count down of the space currently being freed on his primary drive, as well as what he can now fill that space with. I see more of these in my future. He has already professed his love to it multiple times. I fear I am being replaced.

2 out of 5 eggsSomething has changed.

Pros: It looks good and I haven't had one fail yet. (knock on wood) I own several of these and my older ones work as expected. The one that I bought recently is responsible for this low rating.

Cons: Not very "green" since it never spins down. Ever. Even if the computer is turned off, the drive still spins at full speed for days, getting pretty hot in the process. Even if the drive isn't being read or written to, it still spins. The only time that the drive actually stops spinning is if you turn the power switch off.

Other Thoughts: I own several of these drives, and the older ones work perfectly. They spin down after a few minutes of inactivity as a "green" drive should. This new one won't, even when the computer is off. I returned it for a replacement thinking that it was just defective, but the replacement behaves the same way. Fantom must have changed something about these drives since I bought my last one two years ago. I decided to keep it and use it as a backup, turning it on only when I backup my data. It's still a pain though, since I can't use an auto backup solution because that would require the drive to be turned on, thus never ending spinning of the drive. Whatever they changed, they need to change back because the old ones worked perfectly. Right now, I can't recommend this.

1 out of 5 eggsHigh Failure Rate

Pros: eSATA, price

Cons: Ordered 10 of these for my engineering staff ~4 months ago and we already have 3 failures. I only received one replacement and it was so noisy I could not use it so it goes back. I just received a replacement for the noisy 1st replacement and it seems to be fine. This was an advance replacement I arranged so I suspect it is a new one.

Other Thoughts: I am very concerned that we will continue to have failures and lose data and while Fantom support has been somewhat responsive, it has not been overwhelming and they have not recognized any issue with the high failure rates.

My hope is that Fantom recognize this high failure rate and make some adjustments to help ease this pain. We can no longer rely on these for critical data storage and we have to pay for shipping on the RMA's.

Currently I am unable to open new tickets to request RMA's on the latest 2 drives that have failed and I am not sure what else to do. The new ticket form seems to be jacked up.

1 out of 5 eggsMultiple Failed Units

Pros: eSATA interface

Cons: We purchased 10 of these in May 2014 and so far we have 3 complete failures w/data loss. I have only received 1 replacement and the drive installed is so noisy that I have to have it replaced as well. I am very concerned with this failure rate and that it will continue!

Other Thoughts: Fantom Drives support is somewhat responsive but right now their new ticket form is broken so no new tickets can be opened. It has been disappointing that they have not indicated recognition of a prolific issue with these drives. Also, at this point their policy of the customer paying for return shipping is a major thorn in my side!

I have used Fantom drives in the past with no issues but this experience has been, looks to continue to be, a nightmare. I am not even sure what to do at this point. We have 10 of these units and my engineers use them for local backups of critical data but now we have no confidence in the reliability.

I have to believe this is bad batch of drives outsourced from another vendor but I need a solution NOW!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with 4TB drive too

Pros: I have a fantom drive gdp2000eu. Purchased it a couple years ago. I installed a 4TB drive in the unit and it works. I have full capacity (3.63TB) of that drive.

I called the company and spoke to someone who told me a 4TB will not work in this drive. It would only "see" 2TB. Apparently he is incorrect.

Cons: none.
