4 out of 5 eggsSolid drive - if you don't move it a lot

Pros: Great amount of storage for the price. Operates quietly and quickly.

Cons: The light is a bit bright. I opted out of the on-board backup software.

Other Thoughts: I think for someone who is not going to move it around a lot this drive could/would be great, but if you are moving it a lot I'd recommend a portable drive versus this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsNice buy!

Pros: 500gb.
Nice build.
Software on it.
Mounts under Linux distros as well

Cons: D: Gets warm after awhile, but that is because using it.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive about 1yr 1/2 ago at F R Y S for the same price. And I havent had any problems since then. It runs great and does its job. I use it to store movies, animes, documents. (Got a 1tb for a backup) This is my main Ext. HD that I use almost daily. I have yet to have any problems with it. Worth the buy.

1 out of 5 eggsNOT buying ACOM again.

Pros: $100 May have been an okay price for a 500GB hard drive 18 mos ago.

Cons: Uptime if this component has been about less than 1%.
Sent drive back after 1 month, had to pay about $30 for S&H. I could have bought me a SEAGATE external for less than that! The problem was that the female usb port in the back accepted the connection upside down and shorted the board. Once that happened the drive only worked at 1.1 speed. They sent it back and put a yellow sticker on the side of the ports and sent some lame instructions on how to properly connect the cable. This is the only usb device that I have seen that allowed for the connections to be inserted incorrectly. POOR DESIGN.
I am now trying to use the drive again, and it is just blinking red now. This was just an expensive paper weight! :(

Other Thoughts: Stick to good name brands. ACOM is not worth the hassle. I waited 18 mos, to see if it would turn out different!!

1 out of 5 eggsSolidly built but bad internal components

Pros: Solidly built. Casing is made of heavy gauge metal.

Cons: Bad components internally. After 6 months, the LED stopped flashing. A year later, the drive no longer boot up. I took the case apart and took out the drive and the drive worked just fine. The problem is the circuit board.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a good external HD option

Pros: Some of the onboard software is decent.

Cons: This IS a USB 2.0 drive, although many, like myself, are seeing USB 1.1 speeds. I called AcomData's tech support (800-470-4495) and they are aware of this problem. Apparently there is a component that is failing on the board that is causing this problem. If it is less than a year old, call them and send it back to get fixed!

Other Thoughts: External HDs should not be this difficult to use!

2 out of 5 eggsNot USB 2

Pros: Lots of space. No problems so far with data loss or corruption.

Cons: Very slow! Tells me that my computers don't have USB 2.0, when that's all they have. Takes about 20 mins to transfer 1GB - very tedious whether you're using this to transfer a small file or backup large amounts of data. Also not a fan of the whole "hybrid drive" thing - if i had understood i would've never bought this to begin with. Will replace soon.

Other Thoughts: Laptop: HP Pav dv1000 (XP); PC Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H (Vista x64) - max transfer speed attained 842K/s, min 113K/s. Bought a 160GB Acomdata in early 2004 and loved it (wasn't a hybrid - stolen in the mail) but won't buy again.

4 out of 5 eggsHad to mess with it a bit

Pros: Cheap and decent amount of storage.

Cons: No software which is compatible for Mac OS 10.5. Included software has no mac software on it at all. Only mac software included was on the "CD PART".

Other Thoughts: this is basically a SATA enclosure with a Western Digital WD5000AAKS Caviar SE16. First thing you need to do is disable the password protection of the drive. Default password is 12345... there is a Spaceball joke in there somewhere. Next step is to get rid of the annoying "CD PART" partition which has all the autorun stuff on it which has seemed to be a point of annoyance for some past reviewers. If you go to Gearhack and search for the acomdata disassembly there is software at the bottom to make this a single partition external drive. Just like any other external you've ever purchased.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive, mediocre controller

Pros: 500GB! Hardware encryption on board, if you choose to use it.

Cons: (1)USB 2.0 interface bandwidth cannot be fully utilized because the controller chip is a SATA-150 controller.
(2)Under Linux, access programs to a password-protected or encrypted disk can only be accomplished through wine, but once accessed, it performs as well as in Windows.
(3)Even though the case is aluminum, the drive still heats up enough to be uncomfortable to the touch.

Other Thoughts: During a system backup, the drive when locked up and never came back, even after powering down and rebooting. Not being one to return a disk loaded with personal data, I opened the case and discovered that internally, there is a small card with a TI interface chip and a SATA-150 controller. The drive itself is a 500G SATA-II drive. I used partition/file recovery software to bring most of my files back, and the drive now resides in my computer functioning at its full SATA-II capability. Sadly, I purchased this from a national retailer for about 20% than what I would have paid at Newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsHow to Disable Popup

Pros: n/a

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: I figured I'd explain how to disable the annoying popup which appears when you power on the harddrive.

(1) Create a new text file with notepad, which contains the following:
(2) Save this text as "DONTSHOW.INI" on the external harddrive. Note that you must have enabled the display of known file extensions for this to work (the file's icon should change from a text file to a component file with a little gear on it).

There ya go.

4 out of 5 eggsWhats with the poor reviews?

Pros: I'm surprized the rating is so low for this item. I purchaed it from NewEgg a few months ago, because it had the most value per byte of any HD at the time. It still works great. Startup time (from 'power on' to usability) is about average: it takes roughly 40 seconds. It gets hotish, but it doesn't seem worrisome.

Aesthetically, it's a good-looking drive. It includes a solid vertical-mounting plate which I employ; this reduces its footprint considerably. The device's overall construction seems solid.

Cons: The big con mentioned, I agree with -- it *really* wants you to install its software, and a portion of the disk is devoted to a useless CD emulator. However, contrary to what some other reviews mentioned, it IS possible to disable the popup message -- though it took me a while to figure it out.

It doesn't allow one-touch backup unless you install its desktop emulator, which is frustrating.

The blue light is needlessly bright, but not obscenely so. Well, maybe a bit obscene. Anyways I just covered it up with electrical tape.

Other Thoughts: This drive has its share of cons, but they are, in my mind, pretty minor. When I purchased this drive it was the cheapest available, and my only real concern was that the drive not spontaneously combust and destroy my data. Thusfar it has proved reliable for fairly frequent use (periods of hours most days). If this drive is still the cheapest, I will buy it again when I've filled the current.
