4 out of 5 eggsNot Dead Silent

Pros: Form Factor fits the Mac Mini and easily stacks to form a small footprint. Mac on top, drive on the bottom. Connects with supplied firewire and usb cables. Works with Leopard's Time Machine. Using it on my Mac Mini this way.

Cons: Not dead silent. You can hear the drive spin, even though it's at a low level. The only time it's silent, is when it powers itself down from not being used. 465GB not really 500GB.

Other Thoughts: I could have bought a cheaper 500GB drive, but I wanted a Dead Silent one to match the Mac, so I paid the higher price. Now, I ended up with just an expensive low noise one. If you're looking for dead silent, this is not your choice.

5 out of 5 eggsMac mini expansion

Pros: The mini Pal' design matches my Mac mini, the drive is quiet, it provides USB/Firewire expansion (a must have for the Mac mini), and includes push button backup (not available on other Mac mini based external drives).

Cons: 8 MB of data buffer cache instead of 16 MB, which may be irrelevant due to the 400 MB/s Firewire connection.

Other Thoughts: Acomdata website shows 16MB of data cache for the 500GB mini Pal. The mini Pal I received from NewEgg only has 8 MB of buffer cache. There is likely a newer revision available? I'm going to use this ext drive as storage for my Mac mini based TV recording/DVR system, along with Elgato's eyetv 250 plus tuner and eyetv 3 software.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little HD

Pros: Great companion to the Mac Mini. Footprint is a perfect match for the Mini, and it's just a little shorter. The price is very good as well, only about $50 more then a good 500GB internal drive. Adds a lot more flexibility to the Mini, which is somewhat limited by itself. Basically adds 3 USB ports, 1 Firewire 400 port and 500GB to the Mini without taking up very much space at all. Also, both hubs still work when the drive is turned off.

Cons: I'm nitpicking here, but there is one flaw in the design. If you look at the back of a Mini the firewire port is on the left and the USB ports are on the right. On the mini Pal it's reversed. Oops! It makes it a little difficult to to bend the tiny cables that come with it across one another, and makes it imposable to raise the Mini up a little above the Pal to increase air flow. Not really a big problem since I had extra cables that worked just fine, and not enough to take an egg away.

Other Thoughts: All in all a very nice drive. I've had it for a month now and I've been hitting it very hard moving data back and forth (it is almost full at the moment), and although it heats up a bit (no fan) it has preformed extremely well.

As others have said, the USB is a hub only! You can only access the drive itself over firewire. However since this is designed for the Mac mini and the only other machines I would want to connect to it are Macs this is not a problem for me.
I have not tried the backup software so I can't comment on it, but I would say if it doesn't work try using leopard's Time Machine. I didn't get it for the software since I prefer to control my own backups.

1 out of 5 eggsTotal dissapointment with acomdata

Pros: Looks good so it will match with your Apple system.

Cons: Gets hot not just warm when you stack them (2 equal drives) with plenty of ventilation.
Not able to RAID, at least in my case so much for their FireWire
Backup software does not work. Followed the instructions to download the updated version and no serial number provided even if you had registered the product.
Their site is not a friendly one.

Other Thoughts: About the worst technical support encounter with any manufacturer. I registered both of my drives and 2 weeks later no response for the software key, nor any response to my request thru their technical support request.
Called guest what their technical support happen to be out early that day, so left voice mail and still no response. Wonder how many technical inquires one must do for getting support from this manufacturer.
Avoid this manufacturer at all cost, especially if they cannot provide the so call technical support.
Will be returning these drives for the Seagate "FreeAgent" or the Maxtor OneTouch III.

5 out of 5 eggsSlick Design & QUIET!

Pros: Design fits perfectly with my Mac Mini. Firewire is fast. The design is fanless, so the thing is dead silent. Comes with a USB hub (just a hub, no connection to hard disk. Why would I want to hook it up via USB anyway?) and extra firewire ports.

Cons: The blue LED is really bright, and flashes red when the disk is in use. Not a big deal, though.

Other Thoughts: Very impressed with the design overall. I hope its durable, too.

3 out of 5 eggsGood drive but WATCH OUT!!!

Pros: Good 500GB drive. Seems to work well... for a 1394 (Firewire) ONLY interface. USB HUB functions as a USB hub only and does not connect you to the harddrive. Good as any other hub I've used.

Cons: NOT FIREWIRE. Watch out, if you clicked through NewEgg's external interface = "1394/USB" selection, this is totally wrong and bogus. Due to this, I thought I was buying a USB 2.0 compatible drive... but the USB portion is HUB only. You MUST use this only as Firewire to access the hard drive.

Other Thoughts: Note that it's even hard to find this info on AcomData's site. I think this is misleading. We bought two, returned one of them but was able to use the other with Firewire. Both Acomdata and NewEgg should clearly mark this as a 1394 interface drive, with a built in USB HUB.
