3 out of 5 eggsJust take the hard drive out and buy another enclosure

Pros: The enclosure USB connection works well, even now. The look is pretty good.

Cons: The ESATA connection for enclosure is the fatal flaw in my opinion. It works, as long as you do not use it for read-and-write intensive job, e.g., scientific calculation. In my case, the chip that handles the ESATA function quit after 3 months. HOWEVER, if it fails, no need to panic, use the USB instead, your data are supposed to be there. The SAMSUNG had drive it uses should be very reliable.

Other Thoughts: I have used the ACOMDATA USB enclosure before. It is still working on my desk. But if you are looking for a ESATA external drive, find another one. If you have a bad one already and have no time for RAM like me, here is what I did. take the hard drive out, put it into a ROSEWILL ESATA enclosure. Basically you paid the price for a 750GB internal hard drive, which is not that bad.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible customer service

Pros: I had purchased about 20 of these for some data acquisitions I needed to have done. Only one of the 20 was bad.

Cons: Customer service is horrible. I could not find any phone number to reach them. I used their horrible website to submit a tech support request in order to return the DOA drive. After three attempts at reaching them, I never received a response.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from this company. While the enclosure are solid, their customer service is horrendous.

1 out of 5 eggsAcomdata PureDrive External Hard Drive

Pros: esata

Cons: Died after 5 mounts. It said the drive is not formatted but when i tried to format it it says windows can not format it. My computer needs 7min to recognize it .Tried several more computers --the same results. Will try to exchange.

Other Thoughts: Not recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsI'll be back

Pros: Comparatively inexpensive and absolutely functional. I like the blue/red color bar but you cannot ignore it because it is across the entire front edge. Brushed aluminum is nice. This is my second drive in this design. Power switch I like. I like the esata just in case but am only using USB now.

Cons: Runs warm but so does my 500GB. I run a 6" fan in the room anyway, aim it near the drives and that's enough and should improve drive life.

Other Thoughts: Doesn't come formatted NTFS and I think that is fine, let the consumer decide. Two polluting polystyrene packaging items but the box is much smaller than the all-cardboard package my Seagate FreeAgent came in.

1 out of 5 eggsForget your rebate

Pros: The AcomData drive works well. It plugs into an available USB port and functions like another hard drive. It works well for external storage and as a backup storage device.

Cons: Forget your rebate. AcomData did not honor my rebate request for $20. I submitted the required forms and information prior to the 1/31/09 cutoff for a drive purchased on 12/25/2008. More than the 12 weeks required for the rebate have passed. The AcomData Rebate Center does not answer or return calls and they do not reply to my email inquiries.

I have escalated the problem to Newegg.com.

It is a good product with lousy customer service.

1 out of 5 eggsBad luck

Pros: Good price for amount of storage offered. Relatively durable and clean design.

Cons: Mine ran pretty warm. Not a speed demon. And, oh yeah, after a helf year of relatively gentle and sedentary use it's stopped working. Sounds like a drive failure.

Other Thoughts: I thought I had made a pretty good decision, until today when, sitting quietly on my desk, it failed catastrophically. May try a new HD inside (a cool one!) but so much for all of the stuff I'd backed up into this one. Hope you get better mileage.

1 out of 5 eggsmasochist hard drive

Pros: Big storage, reasonable price.

Cons: Instructions for use:
1. Turn on the drive. It spins up, red light turns blue, not recognized by computer.
2. Shake or hit the drive. Drive now recognized by computer. If drive is turned off, steps 1 and 2 must be repeated before it can be used again.
3. Submit feedback to manufacturer and see if they will replace it.
4. Wait for HD to die completely.

2 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 dead, dang!

Pros: Nice size, soild builb, eSATA and USB, quiet.
Easy to replace drive inside

Cons: Client called, "the backup drive is clicking"
1 of 2 died after 4 months. Replaced HD out of pocket, no time for RMA, need for rotating off site back up.

Other Thoughts: HD inside: Samsung HD753LJ (750GB/7200rpm/32M)

1 out of 5 eggsDead in Three Months

Pros: Nice external construction and styling.

Cons: Died after three months of very light use. It's one thing when a video card or network card goes, but when a writable medium dies, that's a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, it's unreliable.
