3 out of 5 eggsYou Get what you pay for

Pros: Settup was simple. Interface is simple.
Looks Great!!
VERY quiet

Cons: SLOWer than expected
Interface a little too simple and limited

Other Thoughts: I thought i would give this NAS a chance despite the reviews, it was far from what i wanted. the interface is simple. load times are slow. and for some reason i couldnt get the torrent client working

you do get what you paid for , but even after realizing that i decided i still couldnt get any use out of the NAS

wired i got around 10mb/s, wireless i got 2mb/s on a wireless n 300mb router.

just wasnt for me. if the review on this item are making you second guess , LISTEN to them. a more tech savy person probally could of gotten a little more use out of this NAS.

Returned. Newegg gave no hassle at all

4 out of 5 eggsCareful what you wish for

Pros: Extreamly low cost for what it is. The support of up to 4TB is outstanding and it's easy to use once you get your drives formated.

Cons: Firmware needs updated by patriot badly. A bit buggy and kind of a pain to format. FTP is also insainly difficult to make work however all other features work fine.

Other Thoughts: It's worth the money. If you want something better better double what your willing to pay.

2 out of 5 eggsBeta Product

Pros: Solid construction, attractive appearance. This product is built very well. Very good packaging as well, on the outside Patriot got things right. Cheap as well.

Cons: This seems like more of a beta product instead of one ready for primetime. There are just far too many bugs that Patriot needs to work out. The web interface crashes constantly, both in IE and Firefox (although Firefox was slightly more stable). Printer sharing only worked with my XP machines, not Vista or Win 7. Media streaming to my PS3 worked sometimes but was very unreliable. PC's would often lose the ability to connect to the NAS for phantom security reasons.

RAID 1 array kept running into problems, crashing the web interface and thus I had to keep rebuilding it (did this like 4 times). After 20 hours of troubleshooting more issues than I could count I decided it was time to send it back.

Other Thoughts: I was very disappointed in this purchase, maybe I just got a defective unit who knows. lol

Like always Newegg customer service was top notch, I sent this one back and bought a competitors product that is far superior.

4 out of 5 eggsBest NAS in the low cost category

Pros: I was looking for a NAS for almost 6 months. Read about many including Linksys, DLink 323 etc. I was looking for one which is less that $200, which can hold upto 4TB, 2 Bay, with Raid 1. Finally I came to know about Patriot Valkrye. Here is my first review

1. Solid build
2. Hard drive installation is easy
3. Setup is very easy
4. Speed and performance is same as any other in that category
5. ITunes server, FTP etc.

Cons: 1. Never follow quick installation guide, use the full installation guide come in the CD or website. Follow line by line.
2. Slow performance (this is same as any other NAS in the category)
3. To add the hard drive, no instruction available. You need to remove the black spacer and use that 4 screws to connect.
4. No Raid 5.

Other Thoughts: I read cnet reviews talking about performance, but I understand $150 cannot fetch that, they really are driving a porche and comparing that with Honda Civic. I also read about web interface crashes etc, but I am not seeing any of those. I have Windows 7 32 bit with IE8.

I sure think Patriot will release an updated version with more Raid options etc. I am waiting for that. This NAS will become a baseline in the low cost category.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Solidly built
- Quiet
- Seems secure enough
- Hey, a print server.

Cons: - Software included doesn't backup from the network to the device.
- Lack of documentation

Other Thoughts: Bought this with (2) Hitachi Deskstar HD31000 1TB 7200 with high hopes. Wasn't quite what I was hoping for.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

1 out of 5 eggsNot a real product

Pros: Cheap, that's the only thing going for it

Cons: Not a real product, maybe once they update the firmware but I doubt it.

Other Thoughts: 1. Setup software is very basic but works, unless you've changed the IP address of the drive, then it won't connect.

2. Web access is glitchy, I gave it a go with XP (Firefox, IE), OSX (Firefox, safari), and Ubuntu (Firefox) and had problems with all of them, lots of connection failures and glitches.

3. It cannot format the drives properly; I've crashed the web interface, crashed the NAS, basically a huge fail. I know it can be done but mine has found at least 3 different ways to screw it up, the last one being the best. Two 1 TB drives were JBOD'd into a 128MB Disk I could at least see on the network.

4. Finally and here's the real killer, cooling. The top drive you put in will not get acceptable airflow. I only left it on for a day at most while I messed around with it and the top drive was running way too hot. I haven't run any tests but I'd expect a very short life for any hard drive in that slot.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Furthermore, for any technical assistance please don't hesitate to email us: support@patriotmem.com and one of our knowledgable reps will be happy to assist you. 5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: This was easy to set up, and easy to transfer information to. It was quick and is really quite. I like the one touch usb backup. All the "paperwork" is on the CD in PDF format, took me a little while to find the login. I really like it.

Cons: Basic set up sheet does not have the company login information on it.

Other Thoughts: I am not trying to stream anything, I just wanted a solid upgradeable NAS. I am running it with two 1TB hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

Pros: Construction is solid.
It is supposed to support Hot Swapping Drives in RAID 1
Setup CD and Instructions are complete.
Company has forums for posting questions and it is moderated.

Cons: Box and write up says it supports AFP and NFS. According to Patriot Forums, AFP is not supported yet, but will be added in Firware Patch. No word on NFS after questions posted on their forum. No option in software or web admin tool.

I was able to formt my 2 Hitach 2 TB drives individually, and as RAID 0, but RAID 1 option format stops at 5% and box becomes unresponcive.

File formats are Fat32 and EXT2 - Other cheaper NAS support EXT3 NFS and AFP with firmware upgrades.

They on offer support via email and forums.

Other Thoughts: Inital Power-On doesn't start the device. You need to hold power button in for several seconds for it to engage.

No new firmware yet. Company says Firmware will be available at end of Feb 2010.

Missing feature support seems like false advertising. I was motivated to purchase device since it had native NFS support. Others wanted AFP support.

Seems like it will need a few firware revisions to iron out the feature set.

The difference between this device and other cheaper ones on new egg is probably the processs and memory.

Tried to connect XenServer to NFS server and it didn't work. Port scan of device shows the NFS port is listening, but there is no NFS service running.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The firmware patch for AFP and NFS should be released within the next few weeks. If you have any technical issues regarding the your Valkyrie please don't hesitate to contact support@patriotmem.com.

Kind Regards,
Patriot Memory Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Easy Setup

Pros: The Web browser UI provides easy management. The defice attaches either to a router or directly to your PC's secondary NIC. It has a default IP of 192.168.16.1, so just use that to connect to it, and configure and use it.
I have 2 WD Black, 500GB each in a RAID 1, and the transfer rates are great.

Cons: So for none.

Other Thoughts: I got this only for the network storage functionality, to use it as an external drive to a server. So will not use manyof the built in functions. Not sure if the drives keep spinning or not all the time when not in use.
