5 out of 5 eggsLove it!

Pros: Easy to use, Access my data anywhere, Great look, Low cost.

Cons: No Android app available yet. iOS app is buggy. I hear they are coming out with these soon.

Other Thoughts: Really solid idea. The product is still a little rough around the edges, but expect software updates that will improve things. The idea is great and I'm very happy with my investment.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Luck With Returns

Pros: Amazing product fast easy to use.

Cons: If you need to return, expect a delay in the replacement. 2 of 4 transporters that I've had have been bad and both times it took 2 weeks+ to get the return. I've actually yet to get the 2nd one returned actually.

1 out of 5 eggsComplete Junk

Pros: Well it does what it says it does, you can use it to access files over the Internet. However, you cant really have it sync local files to the device, you can only have data on the device place a cache file locally so that you can have more speedy access to the data on the device. The included desktop software makes your OS think the files are stored locally. And this works as long as the desktop software is running properly on your computer. When the desktop software is closed, the "local" copy of the files disappear from your computer.

Cons: The promise of this device is a way to keep all of your data in sync between your computers and make this data accessible over the Internet. The only way this would work is if the data on this device is the "master copy" and all the local copies are synced to this device. However, you would not want to trust your master copy of your data to this device as it uses a proprietary file system that is only accessible provided that you are running a working copy of the proprietary desktop software on your computer. If this software no longer works, for example, if your OS is at some point updated to an unsupported version, or for example, if the software becomes corrupted, you will find that all those "locally stored files" don't really exist on your computer, there is just a big cache file stored locally somewhere. The cache file is useless without the software running property.

Because you cannot trust your data to the continued proper operation of their desktop software, the only use for this device is to place a copy of your files on it so that you can access it over the Internet. However, because you are just placing a copy on this device, and the desktop software does not allow you to sync actual files on your computer with this device (only a local cache can be synced to the device), you will soon find that the copy of your data accessible on the cloud is out of date as it is not synced.

Also, the mobile software for accessing your data using a smartphone is really bad. Want to see your photographs? Forget thumbnails, there arent any. You would have to pick the name of the photo you want and then download it before you can open is. All you have to do is remember if the photo you want is DSC03214.JPG or DSC03114.JPG.

Oh and the included wireless dongle didnt work and just fell appart in my hands. I contacted the manufacturer who just told me that they dont support the wireless dongle but I could buy a new one on my own provided it was one of the two versions that will work.

So its not a good backup solution, its not a good solution for cloud access. Its also a bad solution for file sharing as the person you share your files with will need to install the proprietary desktop software on his computer before he can access the shared data. Nobody is going to do this!

Other Thoughts: This device is built on a great idea but unless and until it can sync ACTUAL FILES on your computer to this device, rather than just to one big cache file, its useless. Other necessary improvements would be a better mobile app with thumbnails, the ability to allow access to the stored files through a web browser, and the ability to share access to files this way.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Software - Limited Features

Pros: A good idea, but implemented extremely poorly in every way.

Cons: Where should I start? I'd like to note I'm a software developer myself.

1. The software: It rarely works. You and any people you share your data with have to access that data through the Transporter software. I dealt with customer support for over a month while they confirmed it was a bug in their software causing problems.

My experience: Software had memory leaks (would take up multiple GBs of memory/RAM) while it was idle. Software would sometimes shut down randomly, without a prompt.

Bottom line: Software usually would run properly for less than 24 hours before having some sort of problem. This is NOT software you want clients or friends to have to deal with, and unfortunately a requirement to share/access data.

2. The implementation: Fair to poor, with limited features. The features they advertise are limited in annoying ways.

My experience: Sharing only works for the top-most folder. A folder within a folder? You can't share that specific folder unless you share the top-most folder too. This makes putting files on the Transporter annoying because you have to reorganize your own files so they can be shared to the correct people. Dropbox has the ability to share any folder, whether it's a parent folder or not. On top of that, when you put a file on your Transporter the software shows a pop up message for ~3 seconds on your computer. Put 500 files on your transpoter? Get ready to be spammed pop up messages for 1500 seconds (25 minutes). VERY ANNOYING.

Bottom line: Poor implementation and limited features lead to a annoying, time-consuming, frustrating experience.

3. Customer service: Horrible, until your problem is escalated enough to get attention.

My experience: I started experiencing software problems on day 1, and the customer service number provided is for a company hired by Connected Data to take customer service calls. Unfortunately, the person you talk to can't do anything at all, they can only forward your complaint to someone who can actually do something about it. After ~5 calls over the course of a few weeks, I was finally put in direct contact with someone who was an actual Connected Data employee. After requesting a refund, the employee waited 5 days to respond, finally responding on the same day the 30-day refund policy expired for me, saying that he couldn't do anything since I had the Transporter for 31 days. But... I requested a refund before the 30-day refund period? Doesn't matter.

Bottom line: Sneaky business practices to keep their refunds at a minimum and keep these defective products in angry customer's hands.

Other Thoughts: Conclusion: Don't buy this thing. I would say wait until they have a few more releases to fix all the issues, but the way they handled the issues I presented to them made me believe they'll never be able to make a decent product worth the minimum of $200 people will spend. On top of that, customer service is atrocious and will make you hate your life when you call in with the inevitable problems you'll experience.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Idea

Pros: I agree with the other 5 egg reviewer, "if you don't have any Idea how a network system works please don't buy this and I would like to add " please don't review this product"
I love the way I can add files to a large network hard drive and control who accesses these files. Wow what a cool idea and it is much cheeper than paying for large cloud storage each year.

Cons: It is a little difficult for some people that I have added to my Transporter file system. I would like it a simplified for non technical users to use the system.

5 out of 5 eggsVery cool device

Pros: This device is perfect for a small business that wants some cloud backup but doesn't want to pay some company every month to host it for them.
This device runs pretty fast too, I was transferring data to and from it at about 25MBps to roll out a big printer software/driver package to 5 machines at once.

Cons: You can't be an idiot and install this thing. You must have at least a fundamental understanding of how network devices function and you have to know how to install a computer program from a website lol.
If you don't know how to do this then you probably shouldn't buy this product, or touch a computer at all for that matter.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: good idea?

Cons: This device needs a drive installed INTO it to work at all. Even with a drive installed, this device will NOT allow you to recognize storage via the USB port, nor will it mount additional storage over the network. AGAIN, YOU CANNOT USE ANOTHER STORAGE DEVICE WITH THE TRANSPORTER! This is completely inane! The only way to add storage is to buy a bigger SATA drive, which is currently 2TB max.

Other Thoughts: The company's website is poor. If a drive is required, why do they sell a "drive less" option? They should be more clear that a drive is necessary and that you CANT utilize other storage devices on your network.

1 out of 5 eggsTransporter Doesn't

Pros: None, Transporter never properly installed

Cons: Buggy software, poor documentation. Installed twice with system restore inbetween. Both times the install was incompletd and the desktop icon hi-jacked by Garmin Updater utility (???)
