The Western Digital Caviar SE Hard Drive is a clear leader in the race for the peak of desktop drives. Its 160GB runs at 7200 RPM with up to 100 MB/s transfer rates. Its breakthrough 8MB cache makes this hard drive suitable for high-performance home and business computing as it can handle both data-intensive and high-end multimedia applications. It offers average latency of 4.2 ms, an average seek time of only 8.9ms, and an average write time of 10.9ms, resulting in both greater efficiency and safer data transfer.

This hard drive incorporates WD’s Data Lifeguard, an exclusive set of data protection features, including shock protection, environmental protection, real-time embedded error detection, and repair. Its mechanism ensures automatic discovery, isolation, and repair of problems which may develop over time in a hard drive.

Despite a remarkable data transfer rate, WD's WhisperDrive makes this hard drive almost silent. The most common hard drive failure results from shocks: WD's ShockGuard protects the drive against damage from bumps and vibrations, and the stainless steel casing completes the protection, keeping it safe up to 250Gs while working, and 900Gs idle. Its SoftSeek technology offers smooth operation of read/write seek function, reducing seek noise, while the DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secured position even when power is off.

  • newegg SATA 3.0 Gb/s Interface The next-generation SATA interface supports up to 3.0 Gb/s data transfer rates, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and hot-pluggable point-to-point connections to allow the Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS to deliver optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.
  • newegg WD WhisperDrive and SoftSeek Technology WhisperDrive technology reduces noise below the threshold of human hearing. To cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms, also resulting in more efficient operation.
  • newegg WD Data Lifeguard Technology Exclusive Data Lifeguard features include shock protection, an environmental protection system, and real-time embedded error detection and repair. WD's Data Lifeguard technology automatically finds, isolates and repairs problems that may develop over the life of a hard drive.
  • newegg WD ShockGuard Technology ShockGuard technology instantaneously protects the hard drive against damage from bumps and vibrations during operation. This technology enables WD Caviar drives to achieve industry-leading shock specifications.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking

Pros: Working as intended so far. Slapped this into a camera system, so it's running 24/7. I'll update when it goes out.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I am throwing this drive into the front lines. I'd be happy to get a few months out of this drive with what I paid for it (~$20).

3 out of 5 eggsSo-so

Pros: It works
Was cheap at the time

Cons: Slow, even for a 3.0Gb/s

Other Thoughts: Picked this up for my mom who simply needed a hard drive to replace hers that killed over. Was on sale and I was short on cash, so picked it up.

Had it since May and it's still working, so that much is a bonus. Installing things on it or running an program that reads the disk a lot will see slow down, at least on the one I had gotten her.

That made installing the OS, drivers and the like a slow process. This wouldn't have been too bad as a second hard drive, but for her boot drive it's a PITA. So, I do intend to replace it later on... but as it's been running steadily for 6 months with no major issues, saw no reason to give it below 3 eggs.

1 out of 5 eggsnot looking forward to a replalcement of the same model

Pros: fast for 3 days

Cons: Installed XP on it for an elderly individual. It worked swimmingly for 2 days until it started clicking, and then ceased to boot windows. Dell diagnostics gives it a code 7, which is drive failure, and it already has a good number of bad sectors.
Now I get to play the waiting game with WD's RMA process.

4 out of 5 eggsSecond One Ordered

Pros: Used to pair with another 160GB drive in a RAID1 array in an old workstation. Was happy with the last one I ordered so got another.

Works in an HP dc7900 SFF paired with the Seagate that came with the system and is working well. Would have preferred both drive be the same, but this is more for redundancy than performance anyway.

Cons: The drive already has 39,873 hours on it.
Makes questionable noises.
SMART logs report the drive has been overheated and reports a high multizone error rate and the Spin-Up time is slower than normal.

I doubt this drive will last very long. However the quick SMART test passed and HDTune reported to back sectors.

Other Thoughts: If this was going to be the only drive in the system I would send it back.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Upgrade for Older PC

Pros: Easy on format and installif you know what you are doing. I ran it through software to check the disk surface, index etc. All was good. It is quiet and quick

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For the price it is good for a computer upgrade. Did it with my mother in law's computer and it is faster and quieter.

5 out of 5 eggsnice little package

Pros: Worked great. Have used it for a day. I installed an OS copied some files and surfed the net. No clicking sounds or anything else bad.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Ill update with another review if things change. I am new to the whole refurb HDD thing, but if it works then its hard to go wrong at these prices.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply works

Pros: Low price
Decent speed at the price

Cons: None really

Other Thoughts: I just needed a hard drive for a basic office computer build on a budget and this did the job. Yes you can buy something better but at this price point you won't get better. Installed it formatted the drive all is good.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed!

Pros: No bad sectors
Popped it into a damaged RAID1 array and it started to rebuild.
Exactly the drive I needed!

Cons: It's refurbished, but at the price and knowing it is for redundancy there isn't any complaints.

Other Thoughts: Hope it holds out for my customer.

5 out of 5 eggsRefurbished 160 GB WD Drive

Pros: Great Price and is working well as a backup hard drive. I may get another to use for "creating backup image" and data backups. The cost is equal/better than a flash drive which would likely be too small.

Cons: Showed up in BIOS, but hard to find software to activate and formate with Windows 8. Many people might consider it DOA. This may be the case for many HD's and if Newegg could insert a note how to activate and formate would be great
