5 out of 5 eggsnot bad

Pros: Definitely a lot faster than a 7200 rpm HD's; excellent for hot swap cage.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: Better alternative than a ssd drive.

5 out of 5 eggsBest HDD I've Had

Pros: This was perfect for my small form factor desktop. It smokes my old 5400 rpm.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This drive does like to make some noise. It doesn't bother me much, and it only seems to happen when writing large files.

5 out of 5 eggs2.5" Form Factor

Pros: Fast, Reliability, and Enterprise-Class for workstations and low-end servers. This drive was never intended for laptops.

Cons: This drive doesn't deserve below eggs because of reviewers' misinformation. One reviewer said, "ALL non-refurb velociraptors come with this heatsink". This isn't true. The WD VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS (N82E16822136763) is refurbished and it comes with a heatsink.

Other Thoughts: Newegg's description is listed as 2.5" form factor. Also, look at the photos. It doesn't have a heatsink. You need a 2.5" to 3.5" mounting bracket or heatsink to mount into a standard 3.5" hard drive slot.

The HLFS model has the heatsink (IcePak) and the BLFS model doesn't have the heatsink.

From WD Specs:

WD1500HLFS - Backplane Ready
WD1500BLFS - 2.5" (no mounting frame)

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not fit in 3.5" chassis

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Does not come with the heatsink that also enables these 2.5" drives to fit into tower chassis (ALL non-refurb velociraptors come with this heatsink, so I was totally unaware you could get drives without).

Other Thoughts: none

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Western Digital 150 GB VelociRaptor, as this is not the typical experience with the product. As you have purchases a refurbished VelociRaptor, unfortunately those drive come ‘as is’. We do have customers that use VelociRaptor drives without the heatsinks. This may be a refurbished drive that was originally used for that purpose. If you ultimately want to use a VelociRaptor with the heatsink that comes with it, you would want to return the refurbished drive to the vendor you purchased it from so that you can purchase a more appropriate drive. We would appreciate the opportunity to further assist you, and resolve any further concerns you may have with the device and/or your experience. You may contact us at 1 (800) 275-4932, or via our support website at: http://support.wdc.com/rs/
Please indicate within the online case creation or with the first support agent you speak with, that you are responding to a Newegg review, so we route you and your information to the correct team members.

5 out of 5 eggsEnterprise-class

Pros: Fast, Reliability, and Enterprise-Class for workstations and low-end servers. This drive was never intended for laptops.

A big plus is the price and free 1-year extended warranty (ends soon).

Cons: Some reviewers exaggerate their "Tech Level" and then give a low to mid review, like the first reviewer. Regardless of your technical experience, you never assume product specifications when they aren't listed in the product details. Also, you never research after the fact.

Other Thoughts: The 2.5" hard drive unofficial height standard is 9.5mm for laptops, but other standards are available (7mm, 12.5mm, 15mm). Also, enterprise-class 2.5" hard drives can have a height up to 15 mm.

3 out of 5 eggsMight be a great drive

Pros: 10k RPM

Cons: 13mm

Other Thoughts: The technical description of this product lacked a specific detail that I would not have assumed that in it's absence professed a variance to the norm. To put it plain - It would appear that 10K RPM drives are likely thicker than their 7200 and 5400 RPM cousins. A standard 2.5" laptop HDD is 9.5mm thick. This one is 13mm thick. At the time of this writing, the description of this product does not indicate the thickness (height) of the drive. I have checked several WD 10K RPM Sata 2.5" Internal Laptop HDDs and they all lack this particular detail. Why a company not include this detail if it was anything other than non-standard?
