2 out of 5 eggshigh failure rate

Pros: Newegg's current pricing on these drives is excellent. This model's firmware allows disabling the head parking feature.

Cons: Plain and simple, the biggest con of this drive model is failure rate. I purchased 6. One was more or less DOA, with 190+ ATA errors logged by the time I was able to check its SMART params. The transfer rates for a second drive fell to nearly zero after only a day. Roughly-measured transfer rates seem to vary more than I'd like from drive to drive among the 4 working drives that remain.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased a lot of WD Green 1.5 TB drives over a number of years, in most cases to use in building cheap, low-performance, software-based RAID arrays. Although this line has always been priced competitively, the failure rates I've experienced have been higher than for most other drive lines. The abundance of refurbs would seem to confirm that my experience is not unique. That said, the drives that have been able to withstand a week or two of burning in/exercising have generally worked ok for a few years in 24x7 situations.

I'm debating whether I should return the 2 failed drives to Newegg or WD. I'm feeling like I might stand a better chance of receiving working replacements if I RMA them to the manufacturer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer, your feedback on the WD Green is appreciated and we regret discovering the concerns you are currently having with your devices. Western Digital does rigorously test and verify all of our drives, prior to shipping, with burn-in and diagnostic tests. We stand behind our warranty and will gladly replace your device for you directly.

Pros: Excellent price - quality - using for temp storage of video editing files - so far, no problems.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: An incredibly good price per byte even for a refurb drive.

Cons: None so far. Hope it stays that way.

Other Thoughts: I figured it was worth the risk for the price. Hopefully if it DOES fail it will be in the 90 days that WD will replace it.

5 out of 5 eggsSeems Good

Pros: nice drive, referbed, hopefully it's problems were worked out, have had good luck with 2 other referbed WD drives bought earlyer this year.

Cons: can't think of any, if the problems of these WD drives have been workd out, then these referbs are a good buy.

Other Thoughts: I repaired an old WD Mybook that someone gave me, with this drive.
