4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent drive overall. Fairly fast without errors once I got it running.

Cons: Some bad sectors. One harddrive failed completely in two weeks.

Other Thoughts: I ordered six of these harddrive to setup a linux raid harddrive. I had to send three back to WD for replacement because of bad sectors and drive failures. It took some time, but eventually everything was working correctly.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Drives!

Pros: Bad drives

Cons: I tried to initialize and format two refurbished drives, and neither drive works. One was very slow, and the other won't work at all.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear gdavisloop, it is unfortunate that you have experienced two drive failures, as our drives are all rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before leaving our warehouse. There are many variables that could affect the drives integrity between leaving our warehouses prior to being installed in a computer. We recommend installing and running our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows (WinDLG) utility for Windows users, or running Disk Utility for Mac users. Information regarding our WinDLG utility and Disk utility can be found at the following link.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: The drives Partitioned and full formatted with no errors, It works. The truth may be found after data is loaded.

Cons: I did not buy more of them

Other Thoughts: I have never had a WD drive that had a problem or I could not find a solution for, I have spent a lot of time working out problems with drives others have given me, always found the solution through blogs, feedback or WD tools.

4 out of 5 eggsCorrosion on chip?

Pros: Lots of storage space
Excellent Price
Ran an advanced tool used to check for problems with the drive, came back with none after several hours of tests.
Fast transfer speed, from my 2TB SataIII drive I am getting 100mbps usually.

Cons: There is corrosion on the chip. It seems almost like the chip was left out with moisture for some time and all of the metal parts have a spotted brownish look you normally see with corroding computer parts.

According to reviews this drive gives the slowest performance out of any 3TB hard drive, however since I want huge storage and a good price and not performance, this is no concern to me.

Other Thoughts: The drive so far performs excellent. I am using it as my backup. In a few months if it comes out to be bad I will come back and leave another review, for now however it is working wonderful. If it wasn't for the corrosion which makes me feel a little unsafe then I would have given it 5 eggs, so -1 for that.

1 out of 5 eggs2 arrived DOA

Pros: None

Cons: I ordered 2, both arrived DOA. One had a broken power connector, my system could not detect the other. I tried every possible connection/configuration. I tried different cables, sata connections on my mobo. It didn't work.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your time and money getting mailed paperweights.

I've never received a DOA product in years of using Newegg. I figured it was kinda an inevitable but very rare issue. Two dead at once is just too much. It's the hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggsjunk

Pros: pretty fast, while they still work..
@ least newegg offers to exchange the defective ones...

Cons: not very reliable, im using win7, so no issues with the Advanced Format.

Other Thoughts: these drives are junk. Ive always had good luck with WD drives, one drive has lasted 6-7 yrs. But these drives are problematic. first one failed in just a few hrs, got an exchange, and the second failed within 6 days. i guess one cant expect good quality from a low priced refurb...
BTW, i purchased a couple of new WD20NPVT 2.5" 2TB Greens, and they work great so far (3 wks)...

4 out of 5 eggsFollow up

Pros: Works Great - now

Cons: Needed to RMA 1st drive

Other Thoughts: This is a follow up review on my review date 4/28/2013 - As it turned out, I did need to RMA the drive, as Windows would not "keep" the drive registered in Drive Manager. The replacement dropped in, recognized and formatted instantly, and I have put over 1 TB of data on the drive without issue. Basically the only downside is that It cost me an extra $10 to RMA a defective drive, which made this not such a great deal, but the drive works well - just wish it did the first time. Newegg as usually was great with turnaround shipping the replacement.

3 out of 5 eggsWorked, but took some doing

Pros: Price Point for size, On line software support

Cons: Difficult to configure

Other Thoughts: To preface this, I have installed 3TB drives in a Windows 7 environment before, in fact this was my second 3TB drive on the same system I installed this drive on. My prior drive was a Seagate, and it went in like a charm. This drive was quite the opposite. After configuring to GPT in disk manager and setting a volume, the thing would not format. I tried multiple approaches all to no avail. Interestingly, it would format to 2.2TB in MBR setting, but simply no dice on GPT. I was about to RMA the thing, and then tried one last thing - I downloaded Western Digital's Acronis application and used it's installation utility. I have no idea what it did differently than me, but within a few minutes, the drive was up and formatted. So all things considered, it should be a good drive, but it does not seem like I should have needed to use their application to get it installed. I don't know if this was an artifact of a refurbished drive, but if so, I offer this advice to try the Acronis download to other buyers before giving up on it.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD Green, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
We are very sorry to hear that you were having formatting issues with the drive.
As you stated, Western Digital's Acronis application is able to assist you in formatting the drive, to ensure it is properly accessible with the full capacity. This is not a symptom of a drive's status, but rather the environment requirements where the drive is being installed.
We would appreciate the opportunity to further assist you, and resolve any further concerns you may have with the device and/or your experience.
