4 out of 5 eggsMac portable hard drive

Pros: This portable hard drive is a very stylish, color matched to the Mac aluminum case (although made of plastic) with a nice black band around the outside. The 1TB size is exceptional in the price range, although marked up a bit due to the Mac relationships. The interface is the older USB2, with no options available to update to a USB3 cable. The package includes a quick install guide, warranty information (2 years), a USB2 cable and the drive itself. Included on the hard drive after installation is the My Passport Apps software. This package will automatically update to the newest version (1.1.4.7 at this time) and includes Diagnostics, a Sleep Timer, Drive Erase, and Registration modules. The Diagnostics modules provides only a S.M.A.R.T. status pass of fail, and the Sleep Timer provides a 10-15-30-45 minute-Never options. You can use this drive for your time machine backups as well, and shows up in the Time Machine app as a 999.73GB available
device.

Cons: There are no real cons for this device as long as you are aware of what you are buying. It is not USB3, so do not expect that capability.

Other Thoughts: Considering this is a USB2 drive its speeds are respectable. I used a quad core mac and the XBench testing software. The drives Disk Test score is 36.52, with the Sequential score at 33.85 and the Random score clocking in at 39.66. Very respectable overall. Final thoughts; If you are looking for a nice color matching device to compliment your mac hardware, and don't mind a slight cost premium, this would make a good purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsA steady little Workhorse

Pros: 2 year warranty.

No external power supply needed/used. Totally powered via USB port.

It has a Western Digital brand mini mechanical HDD (like in a laptop).

Mini cable is supplied.

Has a tiny white LED activity light near the USB port of the drive that is easy to see.

Small and very convenient for laptop users. You can easily stuff it into a side pocket of your laptop case or backpack.

The construction is actually very ridged, and without taking it apart it feels solid enough to where it could make a good impact without too much stress to the HDD itself.

Random data speeds for 4.62GB worth of data took just over 6 minutes on a USB 2.0 port. For large files writes speeds were 27-58MB/s and for small file writes 18-22MB/s. For a solid 7.92GB ISO file it took 7 minutes 45 seconds at an exact speed of 18.2MB/s (never left 18.2 lol) which is totally expected for a non-externally powered USB 2.0 device such as this. So this being a 1TB USB powered backup/storage drive earns this little drive an extra egg. Deleting the 7.92GB file from the drive took 1.5 seconds and a couple of flashes of the activity light.

The little peg-legs are little mini inset rubber pegs that keep the device from sliding around, plus it also has enough weight to keep the unit “planted” wherever you put it.

Color scheme matches newer Macs (Western Digital seems to be real good about this kind of stuff).

But the BEST part of this drive is it is DESIGNED for Mac’s right out of the box (Excellent work WD). So if you want an excellent Mac “plug and play” device without the hassle of an external power supply, this is a suave little device that will add a punch to your current system with ease.

Cons: It is a lot thicker than t looks in the pictures. I really expected a rubber type casing according to the looks of it in the pictures (the black part), however it is merely hard plastic.

The price could use a little adjusting in my opinion. After all it is a USB 2.0. -1 egg for price.

Other Thoughts: I ended up formatting this drive for Windows 7 and gave it to my girlfriend for her laptop
I had to go to Western Digitals website to download a utility to format the drive for Windows. It’s called “Western Digital’s Quick Drive Format utility.” It got a little messy for a short while, but it all worked out ok in the end.
Considering it is after all, 1 whole terabyte (some day we will ALL laugh at that LOL), I would recommend being sure to always shut down your USB device before disconnecting/unplugging it (via by right clicking the USB devices down by your clock and choosing ‘safely remove’). That would be an awful lot of data to try and recover if you just rip it out of the USB plug at will and possibly get an error. Alternatively you could set it up by caching data for quick removal too.
Though it’s not greased lightning, this drive across the board will really offer you longevity, reliability, and stability over time. You really will get your monies worth with Western Digital. With Western Digital being a major leader in mechanical hard drives, you really can’t go wrong with the Western Digital My Passport for Mac 1TB Portable Hard Drive for everyday use and storage of ANY kind of data (and this drive offers PLENTY of storage!) for your MAC or PC.

3 out of 5 eggsMediocre at best

Pros: I've owned several Western Digital portable drives in the past, and I have to say, this is one of the best built drives they've made to date. The enclosure itself is quite sturdy with two-toned, hardened plastic surrounding the drive. Only a single white LED exists near the Micro USB port and some branding on the top of the drive, making this a very sleek and simple looking drive. The drive itself is very silent and has almost no heat during operation.

When connecting to the Mac, the drive is instantly recognized with HFS+ partition, mounted and ready to go. Like all HFS+ partitions, it's extremely easy to add to Time Machine for backups.

With a little digging and work, you can also wipe the HFS+ partition from this drive and format to NTFS, however it was more difficult than other external drives.

Cons: This drive has a few major drawbacks that I haven't seen in many years. This drive lacks USB 3.0, so it will lag behind the rest of the market in speed. I had assumed that USB 2.0 would be the limiting factor for this drive, capping the transfer rate somewhere around 30 MB/s. Unfortunately, I found that in write benchmarks I was averaging much lower at 20 MB/s. This write speed is significantly lower than the internal drive should be capable of, meaning either Western Digital is using sub-par drives or limited USB controllers in the enclosure.

It appears that Western Digital also locked the partitions on this drive, making it more difficult for the average user to reformat with a partition of their choice. I was forced to zero the drive before attempting to reformat in Windows to benchmark along side OS X. Being a much larger drive, zeroing can take hours to complete and other partition tools had difficulty removing the partitions from this drive.

Other Thoughts: Current USB 3.0 drives are capable of triple or quadruple the same write speeds with roughly the same price, limited only by the port that you plug the drive into. Even if you don't have USB 3.0, it would be a worthy choice as many new computers have USB 3.0 installed. Other Western Digital drives from the same line include USB 3.0 for approximately the same price.

For read/write benchmarks, this drive was limited by the USB 2.0 connection in all tests except for Writes, which averaged at 22.3 MB/s. The average latency was 22 ms.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the My Passport Studio 1TB, as this is not the typical or intended experience with the product. Although the device is intended for use with a Mac, and is provided with USB 2.0 and Firewire, which are native Mac technologies, until recently the Mac systems did not provide support for USB 3.0 exclusively. For a USB 3.0 Mac hard drive, you will want to consider one of the following drives, or the alternative Passports with USB 3.0

|*Fast (57 sec. a Gig)(200 gb back up took 3 hours)

|*Good Price [Current Price:$100-(10 gbs per $1)]
________________________________________

Cons: *I would like it if had another input to the drive just incase one broke.
*Not much of a manual. I had to look online to find out more about the hard drive. Such as-
Q:Can I be used for multipul Computer?
A:Yes, up to 3.
Q:Can My Passport read FileVault encryptions?
A:Yes, but FileVault can limit Time Machine's restoring abilities (Which sucks and is unavoidable if you have FileVault on, for any backup device). Also FileVault takes space to turn off. I tried turning it off and it said my remaning 30 gbs was not enough hard drive space to turn it off.

Other Thoughts: If you want to use a back up drive I suggest turning of FileVault. If you are having trouble on step 2 of installation you have to click on the dmg in the passport file on your desktop.
Shipping was very fast. From Illinois to Idaho just under 3 days.
