1 out of 5 eggsIt Worked then it didn't... 30 days later

Pros: Worked...

Cons: Then it Didn't. It was my back up drive fortunately I have a second back up so did not lose anything.
Bought it 12/30/13
Started showing up and not showing up in my computer and now it reads "Corrupt Master File Table". Was unable to fix table without losing all the info and even if I did what is the point of using this drive again?

Other Thoughts: To Late for RMA? So WD... Warranty assistance please.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello there, we are very sorry to hear that your drive did not function so soon after it was delivered. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties. You may do so online at the following link.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 2 years

Pros: 2 TB, 6GB

Cons: Died a little under 2 years after purchase. Had no indications it was going to fail until computer crashed. Unable to retrieve my data.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Zach C, we are truly sorry to hear about this unfortunate occurrence. Western Digital recommends that you keep a backup of your important data at all times. Backing up your data protects you in case of a computer virus, data corruption, hardware issues, or electrical problems.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, energy-efficient HDD

Pros: - Energy-efficient HDD.
- Big capacity.
- Capacity/$ is really good.

Cons: - Not the fastest HDD.

Other Thoughts: I bought this HDD as a second HDD with the main purpose of storing back-up information. For this purpose the HDD is great. With 2 TB, this HDD has plenty of room for lots of backups, and storage of pictures. I would buy this HDD again.

4 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: I will start out by saying this.
When you buy a new blank drive, that means it's blank. Fully blank, no partitions, no names, no nothing. So of course your OS won't recognize it. I would like to refer everyone who complained about the drive spinning up to the partition manager in Windows to look for their drive and set it up from there.
That being said, after the process, my drive works just fine and is in the process of handling a huge transfer from my other Drive.
I don;t like long reviews, but there it is.
(Will update if issues arrise)

Cons: None So far

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Drive

Pros: Read Speed: I've used this for NAS, backup, library, and have run an OS off it. I've managed to pull 150MB/s on occasion and 75 MB/s standard.
Silent. Really, it is barely audible, even on a hotswap open air environment.
Low power. I was concerned when I bought this drive 2.5 years ago that the new "Intellipower" tech would severely damage seek and r/w speeds, but this was an early model, and I was not disappointed in the slightest.
Low power -> low heat. While not always true, the less power that is pumped through a device, the less heat it generates. This was not an exception, it often runs at the temp of the room it's in.
They are still made in high capacity. This is a 2TB, but I've seen 3TB on the web.
Cheap.
Cheap.
A 2TB HDD for $80.
Cheap.

Cons: Vulnerable to sidewalks...
Many people have had faulty models (here at least).
Getting hard to find.
2TB in an ever increasing demand for Anime library space, but you only fit so much data on a small piece of rotating film.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't be so arrogant as to claim others at fault for bad luck, but I have never received a faulty drive from WD...ever. I don't what the problem is, be it poor shipping, or a faulty factory somewhere that produced this drive, but something strange happened in the cases that posted 1-2 stars for DOA items.

4 out of 5 eggs50/50

Pros: So I got two of these for my birthday to expand the HTPC. Now I could have storage for all the series and movies we watch. No more worrying if I should run something through handbrake again to shrink another Gb out of it...

Cons: One of them has been on the fritz as of late, within 90 days of purchase. One day it'll be there the next, gone. I started getting a "partition misallignment by 512 bytes" message when I checked it in disk utility when it was on the fritz. gonna write support.

Other Thoughts: All in All, these are good drives. One is a little crazy, but, that's what support is for.

1 out of 5 eggsJust Stay Away

Pros: Very quiet, (of course it would be; it doesn't work)

Cons: DOA, will not spin up.
BIOS sees drive is attached to SATA port.
OS does not detect drive.

Other Thoughts: One would think that a recertified drive from the manufacture would have some additional testing and you would be less likely to have a failure right out of the box. Of course one would be WRONG!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Dave, we are sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems with your hard drive, as each of our devices are tested to verify they are in good working condition before shipping to our retailers. We will gladly replace your drive for you directly, and resolve your stated concerns.

5 out of 5 eggsThese are factory refurbs

Pros: Factory refurb; better than 3rd party refurb
No bad drives so far out of a lot of 3
Free Shipping

Cons: Refurb
Still too expensive for refurb IMO
Poor warranty even for a refurb

Other Thoughts: They may carry a pathetic warranty and I have only owned the 3 (soon to be 4) drives for about a week but these drives are good. The factory refurb (shipped back to and serviced by WD) actually go through more thorough testing than new drives. I wouldn't doubt if these drives last a couple years. All spun up with no problems and have been in operation 24/7 for ~week in a ZFS RAID 10. The drive I lost, which prompted a 4th purchase of this drive, was actually one of my original 2TB drives (not refurb)

I say if your running a RAID and need multiple drives going refurb could vet you a free drive vs. going new.

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY REFURBISHED

Pros: The bitterness of poor quality lasts longer than the sweetness of low price.

Cons: Drive was failed right out of the box. Spent most of the day testing it and running diagnostics and have been waiting for a manufacturer replacement for more than a month.

Other Thoughts: When Newegg says REFURB - they mean REFURB.
I have had problems with the three refurbs I purchased and stopped considering them completely. The drives were sent back for a reason.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsAVOID, AVOID, AVOID

Pros: None

Cons: This is my third RMA on this drive. The replacement drive I received was totally dead. Did another RMA but this time I got a refund.

Other Thoughts: I knew the risk of buying a refurbed drive. Never again. I buy new from now on.
