5 out of 5 eggsFast and rock-solid

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: ideal system drive for a home server. very fast (6Gb/s!) and reliable (about reliability my suggestion is based on the owning of another WD velociraptor 300Gb).

Cons: little bit noisy. probably it won't be good for a system critical to the noise level.

Other Thoughts: i've bought WD velociraptor 300Gb long time ago (5 years ago or so). it costed to me, but i needed a speed for my DAW. surprisingly it happened to be very quiet, and i didn't have any issue, making music.

i've acquired WD velociraptor 500Gb for my home server (HP proliant ML310e) as a system drive - speed and reliability are critical for such a type of computers. now its price is much, much more affordable (thanks to newegg!). though it seemed to me being a little bit noisy comparing to my old 300Gb, it's ok for a server (mine is located in the basement).

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Reliable

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Although I seldom turn my computer off, I just did so to test boot up time for this review. I was on the desktop within 27 seconds and ready to go. Not as fast as most SSD’s but plenty quick enough for me. After it’s loaded I can hardly notice any difference between it and SSD for real world use, plus I have more peace of mind.

Raptors have been good to me and I trust them. I know that I won’t notice any slowdown after years of use, while the jury is still out with SSD’s. Not trying to make this a Raptor vs SSD thing but it’s a decision that needs to be made before deciding which way to go. I wouldn’t have bought more than a dozen SSD’s over the past couple years if I didn’t like them. However, I still give the overall edge to Raptor for my own personal use.

5-Year Warranty

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I like being able to download the WD version of Acronis True Image for free. The latest version worked with Windows 8.1 when the retail version wouldn’t. I started using it long before Win8 came out but just though I’d mention it. I’m running Windows 7 on the machine I’m writing this review on. The Data Lifeguard tools are handy too. I always install them with my WD drives.

I also like being able to use Windows 7 sleep mode without worrying about it. There is a lot of conflicting information about using sleep mode with SSD’s along with some horror stories.

It does make what I call “thinking noises” so if you are one of the many who get freaked out by them you might not like this drive. Being a long time Raptor user I associate those noises with a fast, rock solid drive. I like hearing the quick little zizzz... when it saves something (weird, I know). I’ve owned many Raptors over the years going all the way back to the 36GB (still running) version and have had only one fail. That was several years ago and WD replaced it within in a few days.

WEI is a joke when rating hard drives. A Raptor and a green drive both get the same score although performance difference is night and day.

I bought the Raptor that resides on the computer I’m writing this review on Black Friday 2012.

5 out of 5 eggs500Gb VelociRaptor

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Drive continually performs quickly and quietly. I purchased my first drive on a Black Friday sale back in 2012 and it was amazing. I'm using it as a second drive to, what was back then, a 120Gb SSD. Installing the application on the WD drive and having only the OS on the SSD provided amazing results. I was worried about heat, so I also purchased a hotswap bay with an active cooling fan, but it would be just fine without the fan. With my current Samsung 840 Pro SSD, when I copy files to the VelociRaptor, I see a consistent 200Mb/s write times.
Western Digital RMA process is simple and extremely fast.

Cons: haha

Other Thoughts: My first drive failed on me. But that was my fault and by no means an imperfection from the factory.

Go to WD site and REGISTER your drive!

The RMA process is simple and quick. I had my new drive the NEXT DAY after they received the defective one.

5 out of 5 eggsPerforms optimally

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Performs noticeably faster than a 7200 RPM HDD
Has not failed through extensive use
Most, if not all, clients know the Western Digital brand

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Currently using it as a secondary drive to an SSD. You can hear when it activates/starts spinning, but the sound is nominal and silent past initial start-up of the HDD.

5 out of 5 eggsWD5000HHTZ Hard Drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Can't speak highly enough about this drive and Western Digital Service and Support.
The drive performed very well during a very useful life of about 18 months 10 hours a day but my backup software started reporting its inability to read a sector - CHKDSK did not report a problem - Checked the drive several times with Western Digital's diagnostic program - It reported a failure about 1/3 of the time - Called WD who immediately stated any failure was not acceptable and recommended an RMA. This was done on a Friday and an exchange basis. WD sent the replacement from California to Texas and I received it on the following Tuesday - It was sent two day air but UPS was a little slow on the uptake. I received a prepaid mailer to return the defective drive.
I found WD support most knowlegeable and helpful. Based on other support I run up against in today's world I am well pleased with Western Digital Drives - especially the velociraptor series - very fast and quiet.

Cons: No cons -

Other Thoughts: I own 6 other WD drives - the subject drive is the first one to exhibit a problem. Although the problem was not catastrophic It could have been. Support could have strung me along since the diagnostics were not consistent in detecting a failure but they didn't. The remainder of the 5 year warranty on the original drive was transferred to the replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsRaptor Speed

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great drive & super quick! In Windows 7 though, my "Window's Benchmark" is only 5.9. I think the max is 7.9, but I'm guessing that's reserved for the top end SSD drives (which makes sense). Still, this is a solid and reliable performer for those who are looking for better than average reliability.

Cons: It's quick, comes with a 5 year warranty, and isn't as expensive as some of the newer SSD drives.

Other Thoughts: It's a little noisy, but not bad. It's the loudest drive I've ever had though. Just some food for thought if you're going for a silent build.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: For a mechanical drive, this baby is fast! Installing Windows 7 from scratch on a new build took no time at all. The black heat sink is very sturdy and looks great.

Cons: Don't be mislead by the reviews saying this is a quiet drive. It's not. But to put that in perspective, the sound is not what I would call loud for any kind of noise coming out of your PC, but it is noticeably louder than slower mechanical drives. When I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 with this HDD, it was audibly very noticeable that the disk was hard at work installing software.

Other Thoughts: Down the road when SSD's come down a little bit in price I'll buy one for the OS and use this for file and game storage. Overall I'm pleased with this hard drive though.

5 out of 5 eggsSmoking Fast

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 355 MB/s - 7.2ms in RAID 0 on a 990FX MB. Quiet.

Cons: I don't have any money left.

Other Thoughts: I found these as re-branded OEM's, brand new for $80.00 each and couldn't resist the purchase. They are much faster than my previous single WD 1TB Black Drive which I'm going to use now as a backup drive in case the RAID fails.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect size, extremely quick

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD5000HHTZ 500GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Transferring data from an SSD to this drive takes no time at all. I use this drive as an application drive with an SSD as my boot drive. I don't notice any unusual noise out of this, if it's making a lot of noise, you may just be getting a lot of vibration from your case. I've got it mounted with rubber mounts, so it's no louder than any other mechanical drive in my system.

Cons: lolwut

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive in November 2012 and it performed great out of the box.

I had to RMA it two weeks ago because it wasn't being recognized by Windows or BIOS. Upon further inspection I noticed a very distinct clicking noise. I suspect this happened because of me actually dropping the drive when I got a new case, but it took at least 3 months for the clicking to develop.

THAT being said... The RMA procedure through Western Digital was painless and easy. They even have an RMA status of "clicking noise". I sent the drive in and it got to them on a Friday and the following Tuesday I had my new drive. Outstanding.
