5 out of 5 eggsLoving it

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD2500HHTZ 250GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Performance, Performance and...Yes, Performance.

Cons: Hmmm...Have to back to you when I can find one.

Other Thoughts: Fastest HDD's money can buy with WD dependability. I have a WD Black 2TB in my PC and this thing smokes it. Using the Raptor in my home server build for the OS with 4 WD Red 2TB HDD's in RAID.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD2500HHTZ 250GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have had this drive for well over a year now. Fast boot time on Windows 7. Very quiet! Loved it so much I decided to buy a second one to host the OS of my Linux server. No issues with the second one so far. Fast boot time on the Server as well. Improved Samba read/write times over the network.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Every once in a while I can hear it spin up.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for single and Raid 0

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD2500HHTZ 250GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have used these drives in and out of Raid so i would like to write a 2 part review. I only game on this PC and did not yet want SSD. I did not stress test these drives

Single HDD
I replaced a aging 7200 RPM disk with this WD, and there was a very noticeable difference in boot times for windows as well as most games load times, Guild Wars 2 i saw no difference at all. Bios recognized it immediately. Ran this drive for 2 months and it was very stable

Crystal Disk Mark gave me a sequential Read/write of 150 MB/s
Temps were around 32/33C peak read write 28C idle

Raid 0
This array has only been running for 2 weeks but it seems very stable and has a great improvement on game load times. Windows boots very quick, no problem adding a few extra start up programs

Crystal Disk Mark gave me a sequential Read of 257 MB/s and a write of 352 MB/s
Temps were around 30/31C peak read write 27C idle

Cons: Single disk can be a bit loud but i kinda like hearing it doing stuff (Raid does reduce noise quite a bit)

Other Thoughts: The rig as time of review

ASUS MAXIUMS IV HERO
Intel 4770K Haswell
16G G.Skill Ripjaws X
MSI GTX 670 in SLI
2 WD Velociraptors 250GB Raid 0
Coirsair AX860
Sony Optiarc

4 out of 5 eggsFast and solid, but loud

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD2500HHTZ 250GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: At 10,000 RPM, this thing and crank out some serious data. Moreover, it hasn't had any errors or hang ups (so far, but I will update if something happens). It was recognized right away by the BIOS.

Cons: Because of the case around the drive, it was little more difficult to install; insofar as, there the screws from my case were just long enough to have it securely mount to the sliding bay drives.

This things is very loud. Not so much the platters, but the arm. Obviously, with such a high RPM, that arm probably has to work a little harder. It pretty much drowns out any noise from my case fans (5), VGA fans (2), and large heat sink fan.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not like RAID

This review is from: Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD2500HHTZ 250GB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast, when they worked as individual disks

Cons: A little noisier than I would like, but when the side panel was on and on the floor, it was barely noticeable.

Other Thoughts: It was my first experience with the Velociraptors and I got to say that I was pretty disappointed with them. I used 2 of these in a RAID 1 for the OS on a small server running SBS 2011. Right off the bat they had issues with being setup as a RAID (using Intel onboard RAID C226 Chipset on Supermicro board, see parts list below), so I decided to leave them as JBOD and install OS on one drive, ran great installed fine. So I used the built in software RAID in Windows Disk Management, had problems setting that up, I had to keep re-initializing the disks, then it finally took. Rebooted the server and it crawls, almost 2 hours just to get to desktop. I let it run over night and no change. Well, I had to re-install, made sure all updates were done and this time made sure I had the latest chipset drivers, as soon as I RAID'ed the 2, the systems froze and would not boot. I ran WD DLDIAG and DFT on the drives and they passed both quick and advance tests. I gave up and replaced them with 2 RE4 drives and everything runs great with those.

I connected the 2 Velociraptors to my Windows 7 desktop and ran more tests and they passed. I ran performance tests on both and ran great, copied and moved large files to each one and performance was great. As a test I put them into a RAID 1(Onboard Gigabyte with AMD) they almost came to a halt, performance dropped to less than 1Mb/s, yes the small b as in bit. I broke the RAID and set them back as JBOD, ran great. I tried RAID 0 and then they became completely unusable. Conclusion, they don't like RAID.

BTW, I also tried firmware updating them as well and that made no change either.

My original server parts list.
Intel Xeon E3-1240V3 Haswell
Supermicro X10SAE with Intel C226 Chipset
16GB Crucial Unbufferred ECC ram
2 - Velociraptors 250GB (OS, but later replaced with 2 RE4 drives)
4 - WD RE4 1TB drives in RAID 10 (Data and Exchange DB)
LG DVDRW
Windows SBS 2011 Standard

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Unbeatable performance for the price/volume/warranty.
