5 out of 5 eggsWD Brand name goodness.

This review is from: Western Digital Blue WD7500AZEX 750GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Standard spin speed, helped along by a large cache and fast interface.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Recommended? Yep.

Have been using WD products for decades; and they "just work" - Even after sitting idle on a shelf or in an old abandoned computer case for years.

1 out of 5 eggsabsolutey horrible

This review is from: Western Digital Blue WD7500AZEX 750GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: the space?

Cons: way too loud. i have a 2011 desktop makes 0 sound the entire time it's on. as soon as i plugged this HDD in, my computer violently vibrated and sounded as loud as a trimmer. DO NOT BUY. I guess this product is made for older computers that already vibrate and make a lot sound.

4 out of 5 eggsAdvanced Format Notes

This review is from: Western Digital Blue WD7500AZEX 750GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap, will last for years, decent website

Cons: Website generally good but haphazard; makes you work your tail off to get the simplest answers

Other Thoughts: (WD7500AZEX) I've had perhaps 30 WD drives. I keep coming back because they have all worked, have all been quiet, didn't fail prematurely. BUT the Advanced Format issue is maddening. Maybe I can save you some time by telling you what to expect. YES YES YES this is an Advanced Format drive, one of the few models that can be unambiguously stated to be this type (4k sectors rather than 512 bytes). YES it would work with XP with no problems. In fact I have a WD AF drive (WD10EARS 1tb Green) which has never been "ALIGNED" and has been performing fine in XP for years.
OK, I received the 750gb drive to replace a failing WD500AAKS Blue non-AF drive which is partitioned as C and E. The bearing was whining when I would power it up, especially on cool mornings. This has been going on for a year, and I leave my computer on from 8am-midnight every day, so it's not a critical problem. Anyway, I received the drive yesterday (10/25/2014) and downloaded WD's free Acronis Tru Image WD Edition to clone it. I placed the new drive in a USB3 SATA drive dock from Tiger ($20) and plugged it into a USB2 port on my ancient XP SP3 32 bit machine. I ran the Acronis application. After a while it instructed me to allow it to close the Windows session so it could re-boot and clone the disk. Within a minute it found a bad sector in the source drive and suggested I check it with a utility. Back to the drawing board. I re-started Windows and tried to check with WDDIAG, but it failed ("failed read test element", whatever that means (duh!)). I decided to just do the cloning despite the error. When I did so I luckily had only one bad sector of 512 bytes. The operation took 2hrs 15min (est. 24min) to clone a 500gb disk containing 250gb of data with USB 2. The application shut the computer down. I swapped the disks and the computer ran perfectly. Not knowing for sure whether the application took care of the so-called "alignment" of sectors recommended for XP, I downloaded and ran the Acronis Align tool from WD. It reported the status of all 3 of my disks, showing that one was AF but not aligned (mentioned above), one was non-AF and this latest one had already been aligned by the Acronis clone application. There are detractors for the Advanced Format, but the only downside I have thought of is that a bad sector means 8 times as much lost data as before, but still nothing to lose sleep over. Most of what is on your disk will never be used, if it's not a blank area. The fact that I can do backups without a hiccup tells me the bad sector I had was not being used. BTW, the SMART data was worthless as it didn't even record the bad sector after the failure.

5 out of 5 eggsGets the job done, zippy.

This review is from: Western Digital Blue WD7500AZEX 750GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Purchased another refurb HP DC7900 SFF for a customer who didn't want Windows 8. It came with a heavily used 750GB HDD. Ordered this one to pair with it in RAID1.

The day before deployment the old drive failed with this one still running. It ran quick and things were very responsive. Received a replacement drive from the seller of the computer (heavily used of course) and rebuilt the array.

Glad to have this drive in there for when the old one dies.

Cons: No bacon :-(

This review is from: Western Digital Blue WD7500AZEX 750GB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It works, sometimes

Cons: Under heavy loads, this drive makes a loud whining noise and stop working until pressure is put on the drive in the drive cage.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello dylanweber,
There are many variables that could amount to a drive emitting unusual sounds when powered on. To test our drives health, we have our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows (WinDLG), and Mac users can of course use Disk Utility/First Aid. For information on how to use the WinDLG utility, please view the information provided by the following link.
