5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great drives. Over all worth the money for any NAS related builds (home or office).

Cons: Wish they were like their 2TB brothers in Power usage. They use a slight bit more power than I was expecting.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive

Pros: Fast, Quite and reliable. I bought 2 for my Netgear RN104 to get started. The drives are great and use less power than their seagate neighbors. I plan to standardize on this drive.

Cons: One of the drives would let me write a single 1 to it. RMA'd it and got a return within a week. Worked with WD forums, Netgear Forums and WD Email support. Took 3 days to work through a variety of Acronis, Windows Format, HExEditor to confirm the drive was operational but couldn't be initialized.

Other Thoughts: FYI USPS flat rate boxes will save you on shipping charges for hard drives!! Best to start with a newer "more expensive" drive with new projects, servers or NAS in my opinion. Because by the time you need to swap out drives or have a failure they will have dropped in price and more than likely still be around on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsLow Noise/Temp, runs great!

Pros: * Perfect for NAS setup
* Quiet, Cool, and easy to setup

Cons: * A little pricey. (I got mine on sale luckily, but really they should be in line with green prices)

Other Thoughts: Running 6x2TB in a FreeNAS setup in RaidZ1.

Specs:
ASRock E350M1 Mini-ITX board w/AMD Dual Core APU
2x8GB Corsair DDR3-1333 memory
6x2TB WD Reds
Fractal Design Node 304 Case
FreeNAS OS running on SanDisk Cruzer 8gb

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Fast, Quite, with great compatibility and a low heat signature.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought a pair of these with just a few thought in mind. Speed and Redundancy. I have had hundreds of drives in my hands through the years; of all sizes, makes and models... WD makes some of the best drives (green excluded) on the planet. And the these new Red NAS drives or awesome! They meshed seamlessly with an older NAS sever stepped down to SATA2 and mirrored no problem. The variable speed keeps your power consumption and heat down. But when you need the speed and your server gets tasked they really pick up the game and just GO! I hardly ever hear them, even when they are fully engaged. The sever fan might come on 3-4 times an hour. When it does you'll never hear these drives. So far there hasn't been one hiccup.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far everything is great

Pros: I purchased these drives to go in a Buffallo NAS two drive system for my home network. Originally I used two 750 GB WD Black drives. I found out early that the drive capacity was inadequite for my needs. So I started researching the WD Red drives. I liked what I saw and checked numerous sites for reviews. I threw the dice and purchased two of these 2 GB Red Drives. Setup were super easy to setup. Simply plug them in and turn the system on. The system recognized the drives and setup them up one at a time. I built this system in January. Thus far I've had no issues with sound or performance. The NAS goes to sleep when all systems are offline and it turns on when a network system is detected. No issues with disconnects or lost data due to the power saving features.

So far so good.

Cons: None so far. I hope the prices come down on these.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: -They work in Raid
-They are quiet as can be
-Plenty fast for the application
-WD RMA process is great (not needed on these drives yet but I have used it for a WD Black so I know the process)
-Low power usage.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Using 8 of these drives in a Xeon E3 with 16GB of ram.
Using NexentaStor as the OS with ZFS RaidZ1 as the raid/file system.

600MB/s read and writes using the Bonnie++ benchmark.

Can't hear them at all, They run cool and low power as well.

3 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Bought 2 2TB version for my Dlink 345 NAS. Popped both into the drive and only one was recognized. Checking the drive shows a dent on the drive (not sure if that was a reason) but in anycase it wouldn't be recognized on both DNS 345 and on DNS325. Returned for RMA (down 12 bucks to ship it back). Hopefully the next one will work.

Cons: Concerned about the failure rate. I have other WD drives (few caviar blacks) and they have been stellar. So I have confidence in WD drives.

Other Thoughts: Looking at other comments, I wonder if there is a packaging issue causing these dents and contributing to the DOAs.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsBought one and a time bomb

Pros: First one was good but packaging could have been better.

Cons: Bought two. Package came with two drives. Both wrapped in bubble wrap and not inside WD's packaging, nor came with any manuals or anything... Just two drives wrapped in bubble wrap. Tested both, first one was good and posted 1863GBs. The second one looked as if something was dropped on the top front panel right above the drive connectors.... Because of this, I believe I basically have a time bomb just waiting to die on me...

Other Thoughts: Fairly disappointed in packaging and now have to wait until something happens. I have put them in raid 0 because they were red nas drives which was my goal.... So sooner or later I may lose all data because something fell on it....

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsDead out of the box and 'Im getting blamed?

Pros: It theoretically will hold 2 TB

Cons: Dead within a few hours of powering up. not sure it ever worked. RMA'ed it to Newegg and they tell me it has a bent corner? The thing never left my statically protected bench. Clearly they (newegg) got a bad batch of these drives. Come on NEWEGG, do the right thing and RMA these drives for people. If I had it a few months, I could see blaming me, but it literally was out of the box 10 minutes and never worked

Other Thoughts: this is my first problem with WD Red. This drive caused my windows 7 and windows XP to stop booting. then when connected via a USB drive connector, it stopped the Drive management service from starting.
