3 out of 5 eggsIt did its job

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: When I first got it the hard drive worked really well. It did its job.

Cons: Less than having it for a year and it is already failing on me which kind of sucks.

5 out of 5 eggsTop notch Hdd

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Does everything it should, read and write speeds around 150MB/s depending on the files being moved. Purchased on sale for $56 for a video game storage. And for that price you can't find a better 1tb server grade drive.

Cons: No Cons

Other Thoughts: I would recommend just buying WD Blue because it's a little cheaper with the same performance but there is no reason not to get this when it's on sale like I did.

4 out of 5 eggsToo Soon to Tell

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: All four of my WDEFRX 1TB drives worked out of the shipping package. Right now I am a happy camper. I have had other WD drives fail after a week, but WD is always very good about replacing the drive, no questions asked.

Cons: Seems like a lot of people reporting failure. So far so good.

Other Thoughts: After set and testing, I have been moving my data off my old NAS, so I have been giving these drives a workout for about 16 hours now.

1 out of 5 eggsD.O.A.

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: None.....D.O.A.

Cons: D.O.A.

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't initialize. I didn't have a chance to try the drive out until after the 30-day NewEgg return period so I sent it back to WD. They replaced it with a refurb. Never again.

3 out of 5 eggs3 out of 4 isn't great

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Perform as expected when not DOA

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: Ordered 4 of these drives for a RAID 5 NAS configuration and 1 of the 4 drives was DOA right out of the package. I hope the overall reliability is better than the initial reliability?!

I'll write more in depth as more time passes.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: It took some BIOS tweaking (and a little guessing to be honest) to get the OS to install on this at first, but not worth dropping the rating down.
As mentioned, this drive is running in my server and holds the OS along with the few other applications that are installed. No problems out of it.

Cons: Haven't found any

Other Thoughts: It seems odd to me that folks are having issues with DOA and failing drives. I have this and four 2TB Red drives (2TB's in Raid 10) and they're all working just fine. The server does stay on 24/7 too.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Choice

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Well packed, fast, no DOA drives

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I ordered 4 of these to put in an always-on software RAID5 array in a home server, and they are performing great. The drives were very well packed in hard drive-specific air sleeves. All drives have been running 24 hours a day for 2 months without a problem. I've seen around 80MB/s write speed over a gigabit connection: very pleased. I'd recommend them for a home NAS.

3 out of 5 eggsOnly for a 4+ drive NAS

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD10EFRX 1TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: TLER enabled. OK drive if several are feeding random reads.

Cons: I can't see many reasons to buy the WD RED series. After installing two of these as a RAID1, accounting for the 4K block size, etc the
random read performance of these drives is HORRIBLE. I bought these to replace an existing RAID1 and from the start, everything on my
machine was slower. Application start up, opening a folder of 100 files, on and on. Running MythTV consumes 50% of a CPU where before
the RED drives it was 25%. I pulled one drive out of the array and set it up as a stand alone drive. Copying a 2.5GB file between the
two drives was about 100MB/sec which is not to shabby for a single drive. So it appears that the way WD prevents canalization of it Enterprise drives is to cripple the
random read performance of the RED drives. But that also harms us consumers who use NAS with a Windows file share on it because of all
the small reads of the file system cause the NAS to work harder. It almost seems that any saving in power from using these drives is offset by the additional
CPU needed in the NAS to access the filesystem. Thanks to the guys at techarp.com for really testing these drives and explaining exactly what I was seeing:
Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) 3 TB Hard Disk Drive Review
http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=767&pgno=8

The only purpose I can see for these drives is if you ONLY store large files on your NAS with four drives. Anything smaller just chews up CPU cycles.
In the end I took back the WD RED and bought two nearline drives. Hope this helps save a lot of time for someone else.
PS: You'll notice there isn't any read/write metrics on the RED's spec sheets like a normal consumer hard drive.

Other Thoughts: PS: You'll notice there isn't any read/write metrics on the RED's spec sheets like a normal hard drive.
