1 out of 5 eggsThese drives are simply unreliable

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The drives are energy efficient.

Cons: I bought 5 of these drives for a Synology 1512+
First drive died after less than a year taking out a raid 5 volume. Second drive died after 18 months taking out a jbod volume. 40% failure rate!!

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend!!

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Speeds

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - Great speeds for a 24/7 system
- Reliable
- 110MB/s RW on a RAID 3 Gigabit network

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Running for just about a year, no failures. Sure there are faster, but these days we seem to be maxing out Gigabit with just 3 consumer drives on a network with a simple RAID controller...time to update to 10 Gigabit copper switches? Don't know how to justify that with my other half...

4 out of 5 eggsstill happy with the drives

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Price and purpose.

Cons: Slow drives.

Other Thoughts: I still don't know how long these will last, since it's only been about 1 year on my older drives. Aside from the DOA drives when I first bought them (Newegg has much better packaging these days and no DOA in the last batch), they have all worked in my 24x7 WHS 2011 server on my 3ware 9650 RAID card. Put some into my Sans Digital box, and they are working great there too....also 24x7.

2 out of 5 eggsNAS RED DRIVE 2TB

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast, quiet, doesn't release alot of heat, boots very Fast

Cons: It has failed 3 times within 1 year meaning I had to use third party software to remove data

Other Thoughts: It wanted to compare it to WD's green drives and found the Red drive crashes more "unstable" than Green Drives

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Quiet and so far i have had 0 issues. 3 year warranty.

Cons: More expensive because it is a red series drive (NAS).

Other Thoughts: I bought three of these to stick in a HP ProLiant G7 N54L that I set up as a FreeNAS box in a RAID 5 configuration.

2 out of 5 eggsIs this western Digital?

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have had a 50% usable rate out of the box! Three of the first four worked, and the replacement s replacements will be here soon. And I’m sure it will work.. three of them are still working. I have only read of failures out of the box so if there good they should be OK

Cons: I am a SAN engineer and work mainly with enterprise class equipment, WD and Seagate are my choice for drives. So for a small home NAS I went with a consumer grade drive by a trusted brand. The WD red drives, yes they are slower than a standalone drive but there meant to be used in in RAID stripes and the more drives the more read and write heads so speed is not an issue. I am using 4 bay NAS I could go on about the problems the first drive caused. if you are to use these drives buy eight drives if you need fore and send back the dead ones and you might be up and running or get Seagates.

Other Thoughts: With my 30 + years in computers, yes the Z-80 chip. Western Digital was king, starting with the Winchester drives. But if this an indication of the direction of W/D. They have gone the way of JENSON and Zenith they use to be the best, but the company got sold and they prostituted the good name and sold low end stuff at high end prices until the name was good no more. I would switch drives but I will on the next refreash.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsRMA-ing the Replacement While I Wait for the RMA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Three of five drives are still alive after three days, so I guess that's something.

Cons: The other reviews are correct. These drives are a crapshoot.

Other Thoughts: I purchased four of these to upgrade a home NAS. After installing and formatting, one drive prompted died within one hour with a SMART failure and multiple bad sectors. So, I RMA'd it and bought another, figuring I would have a spare when the RMA replacement arrived. After receiving the fifth drive, I installed it (in a different slot from the previous failure's, mind you) and upon formatting, that drive died too - no SMART status, zero capacity - it was a brick in less than two hours.

So now, I have two drives in RMA and not a whole lot of satisfaction. I rather wish now I had ignored the attractive pricing and had steered myself to something more expensive, but more reliable. It remains to be seen whether or not the replacements will right the situation, but it's a real pain to have 3/4 of a matched set and not a whole of of options besides returning them outright and starting over.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Drives

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Very solid, had mine for 2 years now with zero issues. I have 4 drives in a raid 10 for 1 year and 3 drives in a raid 5 for 1 year without issues. I would buy these again.

Cons: Zero issues

Other Thoughts: Will buy more in the future

3 out of 5 eggs4 ATA error out of the box

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: inexpensive, good performance

Cons: 4 ATA errors on the first try

Other Thoughts: This is my second drive, replacing another failed NAS drive. The first one has been working for about 1 year with no problems/errors.
The first time I installed it the NAS detected 4 ATA errors and refused to use it. Removed and installed again and the checks succeeded. This got me worried a little and will keep an eye for more errors.
May be newegg got a bad batch or something, seems people are complaining of DOA a lot lately.

On a different note, newegg absolutely rock. I ordered yesterday morning, and the disk arrived at noon today on a 3 day delivery option.

1 out of 5 eggs2 DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: None so far

Cons: Two 2 TB drives arrived DOA

Other Thoughts: I purchased two 2 TB drives for my pc build. Must have been a bad batch or something because both drives arrived DOA. Returned for replacement. Figure I'll give them one more chance. If the new drives arrive DOA I will return for a refund and try a different brand. Newegg made the return experience easy and hassle free though.
