5 out of 5 eggsVery solid drive so far

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 2TB, Quick response decent through put high reliability* Longer warranty than consumer grade

Cons: More pricey. 3 year warranty.

Other Thoughts: I ordered one to test and then two more after the first worked out well. I've used two so far will put in the third this evening.

My first drive has a firmware of 80.00a80 and the second has 82.--a82 with the same model number.

Replacing some failing WD Greens from 2 years ago after one failed in my Synology DS412+. Simply take the old drive out, put the new drive in. Go to storage manager, Volume on left, Manage on top select repair and make sure it is adding the new disk. Simple though it can take quite a few hours depending on the size of your array.

While I would like a 5 year warranty on these, 3 years "should" be more than enough, by that time I will probably be upgrading to larger drives.

These drives feel quicker on the NAS than the greens but on desktop no major difference.. but that is just a feel no stats to back it up.

Only had for a bout a week, if they work out in 6 months i will get another for a hot spare and dump the greens all together.

1 out of 5 eggsBought 2 of these, 1 was DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I bought 2 of these last year and they are good drives when they're not DOA>

Cons: I bought 2 of these drives. They were well-packaged, as has been the case for a couple of years now with NewEgg's hard drive packaging. Despite the nice packaging, 1 of the 2 drives is totally DOA. Doesn't spin up at all. Tried it in 2 different systems just to be sure. It's just dead.

The thing about this that is very aggravating, is how the Western Digital employee responds to all of the low rating reviews here at NewEgg with his standard assertion that, "Our drives are rigorously tested before they leave the factory...blah blah blah." I really want to know exactly rigorously my DOA drive was tested. Who exactly monitors these rigorous tests? I can only conclude either no one actually looks at the test results, or the person reviewing the test results is a true idiot.

Other Thoughts: t's so irritating to have to pay to ship a DOA drive back to NewEgg, and then wait around for the replacement to arrive. Sure it's not the worst thing that's ever happened to me, but it seems like something that shouldn't happen at all if there was truly any "rigorous" testing going on. It also seems like Western Digital should be paying the return shipping charges, not the customer who is already a casualty of their utter incompetence.

The really depressing thing is that Seagate is even worse (by far). And between them, WD and Seagate have bought up all the other hard drive manufacturers, so there is effectively no competition any more = no motivation to do better.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Purchased One so far for my 2 bay NAS, plan on the second soon. Runs quiet and cool, lots of storage space, Nice!

Cons: Would like to see a better warranty (3 YR) for the Red series.. While the Black, RE and other business class drives from WD have 5 YR warranties for about the same price point.. Just makes me wonder, a little.

Other Thoughts: Over all so far so good, very happy with this purchase. Have had excellent luck (15+ Yrs) with WD HDD's and will continue to use them. Have had nothing but good experiences with purchasing from Newegg (7-8 Yrs) however, UPS's handling of shipping for Newegg and/or Newegg Flash is seriously disappointing. Tracking is hit and miss. Package delivery, always on the last business day and at the last minute no matter what service grade I purchase. FEDEX service and tracking was much better.

5 out of 5 eggs2GB Works Great in WHS V1 Windows Home Server

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Worked Great from day one. WHS V1 does not require any special alignment for this 2GB drive. It just works out of the box.

Cons: None yet. Reading other reviews was told to watch for DOA in first month, but I'm fine so far

Other Thoughts: WHS V1 (Windows Home Server) only likes drives up to 2TB, and I've found (hard way) using a green drive isn't good as the green drives have frequent head parks. I have had 3 drives in my WHS (all Seagate Green) die recently, just out of warranty. Meanwhile the two 1TB original WD drives (not red) from 6 years ago keep plugging away. Anyway, I replaced 3 Seagate drives with two 2TB red drives. WHS V1 happily took these drives without any special alignment. Eventually if I decide to decomission my WHS I should be able to re-use these in another NAS configuration.

One final thought: IF you are using WHS v1 there is a free add-in (search google) called "Home Server SMART Classic". Use that, because WHS v1 does not monitor SMART correctly but that tool will and also will send any errors over the console to your desktops. I think they have an addon for V2 as well.

I've never felt this way before, but because of so many Seagate drives going bad lately, I'm starting to move exclusively to WD.

5 out of 5 eggsCool and Quiet

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I bought 2 drives, and they came in awesome packaging.
I installed them in a desktop system and ran tests to insure that they were not DOA. Once they finished that i installed into my Synology 2bay system in a RAID 1 Config. They've been running 24/7 for 2 weeks as i send back-ups to it from remote offices.
Drives run cool and quiet. I cant hear them over the other equipment in the room....

Cons: ...... price? lower RPMs? Nothing so far....

Other Thoughts: I was concerned about the seemingly high DOA rates I've been reading about, so far so good. Next up is a 12 bay NAS, so we will see how that goes....

5 out of 5 eggsMuch better this time around

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Worked exactly as intended, run cool and low power

Cons: Not the fastest drives out there

Other Thoughts: I've already got an array of these drives from a previous order about a year or so ago. At that time I had to RMA a few new drives due to defects. Happy to say this time around NewEgg shipped them quickly and in individual boxes and after full surface scan testing all of the drives (5) were defect free and 100% functional. No issues creating the arrays and they run cool and just a bit faster than the original generation drives. Couldn't be happier!

3 out of 5 eggsOne works, one doesn't

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I ordered two of these. The drive that works does just what I want it to. Decent speed (though not the fastest) and works very well in my storage array.

Cons: One drive was DOA. I attempted to create a new RAID volume with the drive and it was immediately classified as degraded by the controller. I swapped sata ports and used a brand new cable to be safe, but problems persisted. A SMART check in HD Tune fired a warning and revealed that the drive had a high "Current Pending Sector Count" and an error test sent the pending sector count soaring. Over 2% of all sectors were found unusable by the error test.

Other Thoughts: I really dislike having to pay over $10 in shipping just to return a drive that should be working in the first place, especially with drives like this that are supposed to be reliable enough for your NAS.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Newegg shipped fast. Packaging much better than the past, but could still be better. Shipped in cardboard box with two plastic inserts to suspend drive in air, and that was in another box with air pillows.

Cons: DOA DOA DOA. Been a long time since I got a DOA drive.

Other Thoughts: Added drive to fileserver and started array repair. It failed. I then ran a smart test & it had an LBA error.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Ran Bart's Stuff Test 5 ( HDD stress test) which takes 3 days to complete to see if the drive is bad or not. It passed the test and has been working great for 6 months(24/7) with out problems, No S.M.A.R.T errors at all . Not the fastest drive , but i knew that before buying it. I got it for the 3 year warranty.

Cons: Cost to much money, prices need to come down a lot!

Other Thoughts: Guys do you self a favor and run Bart's Stuff Test 5 ( HDD stress test) which takes 3 days to complete. If your hard drive is bad it will fail with in this time period. This way you don't lose you files. Also use Crystal disk info or HD tune to monitor S.M.A.R.T errors.

4 out of 5 eggs3 of 4 Totally Survived Fire

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I had four 2TB WD Reds in a Sans Digital external enclosure running RAID 5 that was sitting on top of a mid-tower and underneath an HP LaserJet in a house that burned for 36 hours. The heat caused the HP LaserJet above and the plastic in the USB ports of the mid-tower below to start melting. If that were not enough thermal stress, the fire department pour 250,000 gallons on the house and all this happened during a sub-zero winter. In other words, the drives got a really nice heat treatment: they were annealed an elevated temperature for an extended period of time and then rapidly quenched to below freezing.

Anyways, four 2TB WD Reds initially survived the fire. After about 6 weeks one began to fail. I have been using the other three drives for over three months now and it is clear that they have totally survived. So despite all the DOA/RMA issues with these drives, there is a level of reliability with them that is significant too.

Cons: Frankly, my beef with these drives is the performance. I replaced 640GB WD Blacks with these 2TB WD Reds. I did not expect to see much of a difference because I am only using FireWire-800 (not USB-3.0, eSATA or Thunderbolt), which I would have thought would have been the limiting factor... it wasn't. The performance took a very noticeable hit and playing HD content seems to require a couple seconds of buffering. Although I RMA'd my Red dead from the fire, I actually replaced it with a 2TB Black.

Other Thoughts: The performance of Reds is not good enough for a mildly demanding individual peripheral storage user... let alone multiple users in an NAS environment. In some situations WD should be completely ignored when they say things like you shouldn't use Blacks for RAID.

On the other hand, Sans Digital makes some beastly Mack Truck enclosures.....
