3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - Quiet operation
- Fairly cool
- It's a trooper (like most all WD drives I've owned/used)
- 3 year warranty

Cons: - Failing after 2.5 years

Other Thoughts: Bought the drive on 11/2012. Used it in a small home media server for storing bulk video. Booted up the machine yesterday to find the drive was no longer accessible from Windows. Ran wddiag which erred out with a 0225 indicating too many bad/unreadable sectors.

Figuring whatever was on it was lost I tossed it into a Linux box I have that I've used to pull previous WD drives back from the brink long enough to recover data and sure enough, it saw everything on the drive and is pulling stuff off as I type this.

While I have seen WD drives fail through the years, I've still yet to see one that wasn't at least partially recoverable if you have the tools. Even drives that sound like they're spinning themselves apart inside. Yet to see that kind of ability from any other drive manufacturer.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value for what you are getting

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Stays up with demand
Great for any advanced home user

Cons: Price is a little high but a great value.
Still trying to figure out what exactly IntelliPower does or does not do.

Other Thoughts: If you need something for a NAS and don't have a lot of money to spend, then go this route. The HDDs are great and work with the Synology DS215j Network Storage just fine. Then, at a later time, you can purchase larger capacity drives when the price goes down.

1 out of 5 eggsShould have heeded the warnings

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Great Newegg price and shipping

Cons: Drive failed in 3 months

Other Thoughts: I should have believed the negative reviews. I bought this drive based on the marked "reliability". I installed this in my BuffaloTerastation, and after 3 months, I noted a red flashing light. Drive failed, data lost. I managed to get the drive reformatted, and 2 days later, drive failed again. Very disappointed. I expected more of Western Digital.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Strong 2+ Years Later

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I put 2 of these 2TB drives into a FreeNAS box over 2 years ago (Mirror array Raid 1) the FreeNAS is on line 24/7/365. I only shut it down twice a year for about an hour to clean the dust out. It backs up 6 PC's and is used as a streaming media box. The WD Red's just keep on going.

Cons: None at all.

Other Thoughts: This is not a long "flowery" review...just a simple testament to the reliability of these drives. Using a basic unmanaged DLink SOHO gigabit switch with Cat5e cables and an Intel NIC in the FreeNAS box, I get sustained large file transfer speed of 110 Mbps.

I have always preferred Western Digital drives. I use them in all my builds for mass storage. WD's are like my Toyota Camry, they just run!!

1 out of 5 eggsBought 6 hard drives

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Extended warranty is a plus.

Cons: Bought 6 hard drives and have 10 months using the drives. 1 of my hard drive just completely died. 2 others just got bad sectors after running extended test. Sending it to WD for RMA but I am not happy of the odds of failures on these drives. 3 out 3 in less than a year.

2 out of 5 eggs2 returns in less than 18 months.

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Pretty good customer service from WD

Cons: Had to RMA a drive in under 6 months. Now doing another RMA for the returned drive. The warranty was 'up' on the replacement drive, so I had to call WD and get the warranty extended. Now have to wait to RMA the drive.

Other Thoughts: Anyone who has purchased or will purchase these RED drives should look up the 'LOAD CYCLE COUNT' issue. Its seems to be a pretty big show stopper.

Many cloud-based services are reporting that regular 'consumer grade' drives out perform these 'special' or 'enterprise' class drives.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsWD Red is a solid upgrade for older NAS/WHS

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD20EFRX 2TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Went from 84MBs to 122MBs on older Acer Easystore H340 Windows Home Server. This was when upgrading from the factory WD Green 1TB to a WD Red 2TB. For the money it was a good upgrade.

Cons: Price for the size
