5 out of 5 eggsQuiet, Low temperatures, Fast transfer speeds

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Bought 2 and used them in a IN WIN MS04 mini server. The server is right beside me on my desk and I barely hear the drive spinning.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Low heat plus low noise is a perfect match

2 out of 5 eggsFast and Furious

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Newegg shipped as advertised and received on time. Drive installed easily with no problems. Partitioned into 2 - 1.5 TBs. Everything went well. We have 11 of these drives and this is the only failure.

Cons: Purchased in January, lost a full partition in early April.

Other Thoughts: WD sent replacement quickly. WD support has been top notch to help resolve. 2nd drive arrived with less than 3 TBs available. WD support working closely to resolve issues. Timely responses via E Mail and telephone. Titled fast because of the support I feel I have received from WD. Furious, because I need the drive to function properly.
I believe a lot of the issues you read about here are caused by installation, or improper configuration.
Do not ever do a low level format on these drives! My opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: - Reliable for NAS build
- Seems fine under 24/7 operation
- Recommended by most NAS communities

Cons: - None

Other Thoughts: I'm not the biggest WD fan but they seem to make a good quality NAS drive. From my research, many DIY NAS sources (such as the FreeNAS community) typically recommend the WD Red series drives. I chose this for a safe build.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet and Cool

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: - Low temperatures
- Fast transfer speeds
- Works fantastically with FreeNAS
- Reports temperatures and other associated drive data properly

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've traditionally avoided NAS drives because I was wary of the 5400 RPM spindle speeds. I received two of these 3TB disks as review units. To be blunt, I've now ordered four more in order to upgrade all of the drives in my FreeNAS RAID10 array.
The drives are more power efficient, cool, and produce less noise than the traditional 7200RPM 2 and 3TB disks I've used in the past. They also properly report data into FreeNAS which I've had difficulty with in the past. My only hesitation is that they only support up to 8 drives in an array. Not sure how that is possible as there shouldn't be anything stopping me from expanding my array to 10 drives in the future.
Over all these disks have made me a believer. I'm excited to get my remaining 4 disks installed and running.

4 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital Red WD30EFRX 3TB NAS Drive

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Quiet! Wonderfully Quiet! If your NAS is in a location near your entertainment center the fact that these drives are virtually silent is a huge plus.

Cons: Not a con of the drive nor the brand, but a bias of my own. I have been burned by WD drives in the past (lost major amounts of data) and have a hard time considering them for any major use. I would certainly NOT take anything away from these drives based on that and from the performance I have seen so far with these I may have to start considering them again.

Other Thoughts: I normally don't take this long to do a review, but I wanted to have these drives in place and in use for a while to try to make a better judgment call. I have always used drives that were designed for Video surveillance systems as they are designed for 24 – 7 use. The WD Red series are intended for use on NAS Devices so should hold up well to the task. Only time will attest to that of course, so at this point longevity is not something that can be critiqued.
I have two of these drives running in my Netgear NAS to do my review and so far they have been running smoothly and from a performance stand point I have had absolutely no issues. Raid has been keeping them mirrored without issues. Temperatures have remained even, there have been no spikes even during times of heavy access.
I feel that only a couple weeks is really not sufficient time to do a review on an item such as these, Although I have had no issues so far only time can be the determining factor in the ultimate review. I must follow up with a review at a later date to feel confident in my breakdown on these drives. I would most definitely recommend and consider these drives for any NAS system that is in need of large capacity drives.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent NASware drives

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: The 6.0TB kit, with 2 Red 3.0TB drives spinning at 5400 RPM is quite a pair in a raid 0 configuration. The models included are WD30EFRX with 64MB cache.

I have these installed in a Vantec NexStar MX raid enclosure connected to my Asus motherboard via the PCIe x1 slot with a Media Sonic Pro eSATA III board. They run 24x7 as a backup to my MS Server 2012R2 Essentials home server.
The setup is very cool and extremely quiet. I need to put my ear right up to the case to hear any hum. Very nice indeed.

To check the throughput via the Media Sonic eSATA board I used HD Tune Pro 5. Throughput measured 23MB/s maximum and 187MB average for READ. Far from what you would see on the MB raid controller, however this is very respectable for the enclosure/eSata card combination. I am very pleased.

Cons: After using this setup for nearly a month now I could only wish the drives spun at 7200 rpm. But then maybe more heat and noise would be generated. 5400RPM seems fine though in raid.

Other Thoughts: Perfect in every way for what they were designed for. Cool, quiet and fast. No issues after nearly 30 days running 24x7. Excellent drives if you are looking for true NASware drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: I ordered a set of 4 of these. When they arrived, I ran the WD tools for a full surface test (I think it took about 4 - 6 hours) and every one of them was nearly perfect - I am impressed. They seem to run cool and aren't very loud. I have two of them in a NAS and a third in a computer for backup for several months and no issues. They even came with a cool sticker to put on the front of the case.

Cons: None that I've found

Other Thoughts: I was happy to see that these had the SATA locking cable compatible shell - the WD Black drives don't have a shell around the connector and the cable isn't supported and it won't lock. These drives are meant to slide into a NAS backplane but yet they have the SATA locking shell - well I like them this way so I'm not complaining

5 out of 5 eggsJust what the doctor ordered

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Silent when running in a padded case (Antec Sonata w/silicone washers).

Drive temp. after 15 min. continuous Write - 33 C. (Single 120mm rear exhaust fan @ 918rpm).

Reasonable 3-year warranty for an always-on drive.

CrystalDiskMark results (RAID 1):
Sequential - Read 161MBs / Write 152MBs
4K Random - Read 0.55MBs / Write 1.43MBs

Cons: Not suitable to re-purpose as a Windows boot drive. Choose a WD Blue or WD Black for that purpose or, better still, get an SSD since they are now reasonably priced

Other Thoughts: How will a pair of WD Red 3TB drives fare in a low-power HTPC?

Motherboard: ASRock Q1900-ITX
CPU: embedded Celeron J1900 @ 2.0GHz w/Intel HD Graphics
RAM: 2 x 4GB G-Skill DDR3-1333
Boot drive: Intel 320 80GB SSD
2 x WD Red 3TB HDDs

System is satisfactory in our home network. There's the usual momentary delay when accessing files after which it's nicely responsive. Some file types take longer to open than others but that's to be expected. We can ask the drive(s) to serve up a recorded TV show to one PC while serving up photos, documents, home video or music on a second PC, no problem. When adding the task of recording a new TV show with Windows Media Center while serving the other files the WD Reds kept working without a glitch.

Should mention the drives were set up in Windows Disk Management using the Create Mirror option. This requires only a few clicks of the mouse to set up unlike FreeNAS, for example. It's a basic setup to hold your data and have it always backed up for safety. For those not familiar this is simply a "software" RAID 1 setup. There's some cpu overhead and a bit of latency involved, but that makes it a good test to see how the drives perform in a minimally powerful system.

Verdict: WD Red(s) are capable drives for home or small business. They run quietly enough for Home Theater PC use and don't seem to get hot even in a case with one exhaust fan.
