5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives!

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: -Large Capacity
-NAS Capable
-Good Performance

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've read a LOT of reviews complaining of D.O.A.'s, but I own 10 of these drives, some of them as old as 2 years and have had ZERO D.O.A.'s and ZERO failures in that time! I have been using these in a Windows 8 storage space configuration for the time being, and they have worked out amazingly well. I will continue to use these drives in the future for sure!

5 out of 5 eggsRed Hot, That Is

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Awesome price, designed for NAS uses, wasn't DoA

Cons: None thus far. Maybe it didn't come with a Western Digital branded flag to hang outside my house?

Other Thoughts: I've always found Western Digital to be the best drives out there - regardless of what the naysayers think. I have two of these drives in my FreeNAS home server along with an older WD Green drive. They're constantly spinning, and have been up for nearly three months without a reboot. They get the job done, they're relatively quiet, and hey - they're 3 TB. Notbad.jpg.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far 3 of 4 still working

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Size, price.

Cons: Not sure how long they will last.

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 of these to make a raid server for my home theater. After having them for @ 1 year, I just got a message from my raid monitor telling me one has failed. After running some diagnostics, I have found it is no longer booting with the rest at start up.
The other three are working fine as far as I can tell, and lets hope it stays that way until I can swap out the bad one. I have 176 Blue Rays ripped and do not want to loose all that data.

5 out of 5 eggs24/7 over year no failures

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Drives have worked reliably for over a year. They are quiet and low power.

Cons: Not the fastest, but that is tradeoff with heat and power.

Other Thoughts: I started with 5 drives in a Linux raid 6 server and have expanded to 9 drives. The only reliability issue has been with the controller used with the drives. Too many disk failures are related to controllers, cables and system setup. Currently using an LSI 9211-8i, non-raid mode (would also suggest LSI LSI00302 (9207-8i Kit)). The 9211-8i failed and was RMAed with LSI, but the controller runs hot and needs fan blowing directly on it. The raid drives have never failed. Many MB sata controllers have inadequate heat sinks and can also cause drive failures.

1 out of 5 eggsTwo in a row DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: none

Cons: Second one arrived. Passed quick test of WD;s DataLifeguard Diagnostics. Long test: ran for 30 hours. It got stuck on one bar, sector # not advancing very quickly. Every second, estimated time remaining increased by four or five seconds. After 8 hours I pressed cancel. 30 hours later the test finally stopped: FAIL/TOO MANY BAD SECTORS. So in addition to bad drives, the test takes over two days if there is an issue.

Other Thoughts: I wonder how many would come back if everyone ran the extended test?

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: quick ship as usual

Cons: Open it up, test it, Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Too many bad sectors detected.
Test Time: 08:33:27, July 03, 2014

Other Thoughts: Don't know why I have to pay return shipping when a unit is DOA. It's certainly not my fault, so why am I paying for it?

1 out of 5 eggsWD Red The good the bad & the ugly

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Cost. Maybe if they fix the reliabilty issues the ability to work together in raid systems

Cons: Reliability. Poor speed.
The first itteration of these drives was notoriously unreliable. Although they are designed to work best in a raid configuration their performance is the worst of all major brands. The cost while good is not worth the hassle.

Other Thoughts: Thosxe who write off WD after using these are making a mistake. My question is why would anybody interested in the redundancy of a raid system spend the extra money to by multiple hard drives and not get enterprise drives. The WD Black Enterprise support all the latest raid technology are wickedly quick and stone reliable. Regular Blacks are not the best for raid. The Reds are just not ready for prime time in any application.

Manufacturer Response:
