5 out of 5 eggsSo Far i love Them

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Bought 2 and put them into a RAID 1 config. They run my WHS and are upgrades from Seagate 1.5 TB. They are running in a very small inclosure 24/7 for the last 4 months and i haven't had a hiccup yet. the Case is in a cabinet and has endured some heat... These are storing and serving almost 1000 movies and all mine and my GFs user files to the tablets, 2 laptops, 2 phones, 1 desktop and the internet. I have done a good deal of video editing while streaming mulitiple HD movies and copying large files to them and I didn't experience any lag!

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: If i got a dud i would be upset but would still use them.

1 out of 5 eggsCAVEAT EMPTOR!

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Was great when it worked.

Cons: The reliability of this drive is highly questionable. I'm on my second drive from WD after I RMA'd the first one. Now this drive is on the verge of failure according to my NAS. And before people ask, yes, the NAS is alright since I have another drive in there chugging along just fine.

This seems like a series of lemons from WD and I hope they learned some lessons from this drive series. I've heard the 4 and 2 TB drives are reliable but for whatever reason, the 3TB series seems to be a dog.

Other Thoughts: The irony of this drive is that it's specifically made to be used in NAS and yet I'm already experiencing my second failure with this drive in a Synology NAS.

I still believe WD makes good hard drives. It's disappointing because this is the first series of drives from WD that I've found not to be reliable.

Unfortunately for WD, I might be looking at other competitors more closely after this fiasco.

5 out of 5 eggsJury Still Out

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Large Capacity
WD Warranty
Price

Cons: None as yet

Other Thoughts: I only bought 1 WD Red drive since NewEgg was out of the HGST drive I wanted......I was reluctant to try the Red with all the negatve reviews but I've had good luck with WD in the past.
Time will tell if WD has fixed the huge problem it seems to have had with DOA drives.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow, unreliable

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: wasn't DOA

Cons: high latency, low reliability

Other Thoughts: Bought 4 for a home NAS. Two of four drives failed after a year. Did extensive testing before putting into actual service. Very high latency starting data transfers (read), sometimes up to 10+ seconds. After a year one disc started throwing ever increasing SMART errors then failed. Shortly after another disc did the same.

5 out of 5 eggsSpeedy and quiet

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I have 2 drives and they work great. Very fast and you can't even hear them running over the rest of the system. I'm very happy with them.

Cons: More expensive then Blue drives, but if they last longer and use less power, than I'm fine with that.

4 out of 5 eggsQuite, Cool, and Reliable as long as not DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: This drives make little to no noise during seeks or read/write and they run nice and cool even when stressed during a long writing session.

I have purchased 4 of these drives over the last year without issue until today. I purchased two drives together and one of them was DOA. During the first power up it made a loud clunk and then click...click...click...

Cons: I have no cons for this drive, it does everything I could ask of it. However I am not to impressed with my recent DOA plus the other DOA drives I have read about here on Newegg.

Other Thoughts: I accept that some hardware will be defective upon delivery, however I am very disappointed in Newegg's RMA policy requiring me to pay for return shipping of a defective item

1 out of 5 eggsVery Poor Quality "Avoid this Drive"

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Sata 6.0 NAS Drive

Cons: I purchased 4 of these drives and 3 months later one drive has already went DOA. Totally dead will not spin up and failed with no warning.

Other Thoughts: I see drive quality has suffered greatly over the last few years and it appears Western Digital has joined the game.

Newegg is there any way you can RMA this drive? 90 days old! No Drive should fail that quickly.

4 out of 5 eggsgood HDDs

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: So far so good - they all passed the long read/write tests. I bought several over a period of months to get drives manufactured during different runs. I have them setup in a RAID 6 (the 'hot' disk array these days) which offers double redundant protection over RAID 5 but with similar write speeds.

Cons: Time will tell whether they last. Generally I find HDDs are either DOA, fail quickly after being put into use, or work for years and it's completely the 'luck of the draw'.

Other Thoughts: All of my WD HDDs are still working. Some are over 10 years old, although these older drives are obviously not in daily use. The floods in Thailand a few years back really killed hard drive manufacturing. Before the Typhoon and floods, HDDs were ridiculously cheap and very reliable. All of the manufacturers had developed a mature manufacturing process and produced consistently high quality drives. Now, it's hit or miss with all of them. Gotta love climate change.
