3 out of 5 eggsWD Red NAS HDD SATA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Runs Quiet and Cool

Cons: Drive didn't last a year before loosing data on the platters. lost about a terabyte out of 3. I was able to recover 1 terabyte of good files.

Other Thoughts: I use Western Digital drives exclusive in all of our computers. There are very few failures I have never last data off of the platters but have had a few electronics fail which is easy to recover. This is the first Red that I have owned and I am a little disappointed with it but still stand by WD, but will stay with the Black

5 out of 5 eggsMostly positive experience

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Relatively low cost/TB, Low noise, No vibration issues.

Cons: Based on reviews, it seems there are better NAS drives available but I would rather sacrifice a small amount of performance/reliability for a significant cost savings.

Other Thoughts: The site offered the best deal to date since I have been watching prices (4 for $400) and I have had mostly positive results with this model. Out of 13 purchased for use in several DROBOS, I have only had one that had problems. It pretty much stopped working after very little use and would not function in the array or as a standalone drive. WD's RMA process is pretty straightforward and my only complaint would be paying to ship them a drive that should have worked in the first place.

Samsung used to be my favorite drives due to cost and reliability but when they were bought out, I started buying WD drives instead. The Samsung drives are still going strong after years of 24/7 use and I hope the WD drives will match them in longevity.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Great deal on 4 from NewEgg. All 4 have been working fine since I set up the RAID-5 array.

Cons: SLOW. Once you get past the generous buffer, speeds ratcheted down to about 30MB/s. So the first few gigabytes go at the speed of the network (100MB/s), but after a minute or so, the speed drops to the 30MB/s level. My 7200RPM Seagate disks in a software RAID-5 config write at a sustained 70MB/s.

Other Thoughts: I have these hooked to my Highpoint TR4UT+B hardware RAID box. The box should be able to sustain 150MB/s, but since all my access is over the LAN, the 100MB/s network connection is the limiting factor. But even then, these drives can't manage more than 30MB/s.

Also, this is my first purchase of a Western Digital drive in YEARS. I've had multiple disk failures over the years, and most of the failures have been Western Digital disks. It was so bad I stopped buying Western Digital drives. We'll see how these last.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent HDD

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Formatted and installed with no issues.

Very quiet, even quieter than the WD Blue 1TB that it replaced.

Very good price, especially when on-sale.

Legendary WD quality and reliability.

Well-packaged for shipping.

3-year warranty.

Cons: Pretty weighty for a 3.5" HDD, but no deductions.

Other Thoughts: What can I say, WD has done it again!

No regrets buying this HDD upgrade.

5 out of 5 eggsOwned these for over a year - great product!

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: The drives have performed for over a year without even a whisper. Quiet and efficient. I have them configured as RAID-5 and have them being backed up to another NAS as well as a couple of USB hard drives. I would recommend them very highly.

Cons: Hardly any cons that I can think of!

Other Thoughts: I am not sure if this is only because of the batch that I bought - but WD-RED drives seem to be very good at doing what they have to - stay spinning!

5 out of 5 eggsProven good drive

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Had 4 running in my Drobo 5D for 6 months now. Absolutely no issues. Worked right out of the box. Barely hear them running (really only hear the quite Drobo fan) - can only tell the drives are running when they are spinning up from sleep.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Seems very reliable - ordered 2 more today.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Works as expected

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased four of these in a ZFS RAIDZ array in my FreeNAS setup in March of 2014. My system has worked flawlessly but my first pool is now 81% full. I have found I'm using my system for more than I originally had planned and contemplating expanding my system and create a new pool of drives... probably going to buy another four. I am leaving feedback because I wanted to let others know that I am wanting to buy more... about as good feedback as I can think for hard drives.

5 out of 5 eggsJust buy it.

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: These drives are awesome, best fit for a Synology

These drives are fast, quiet, don't vibrate/resonate like older drives and consistently show lower temps than any other drives I had purchased in the past.

I really like Newegg's new packagin for drives. It's got an inflatable mars rover kind of vibe bag in the box to protect it. I'm actually keeping them for future use, like sneaker-neting...

Cons: Would have gotten the 4tb version is the prices were right.

The 3tb is a really good product at an affordable price right now.

Other Thoughts: For a NAS use case, just buy these and stop researching...

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable & mediocre service

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Hard to find any when they fail so frequently.

Cons: Long warranty in which you can pay shipping to have a drive replaced. Given the price compared to others, I expected better.

Other Thoughts: Bought a Synology 414 and ordered four of these drives for RAID 5. Glad I mirror the NAS because in just over a month one drive failed, and one is clearly failing. WD has the gall to charge me for shipping for their defective product! I'm stuck with these, because they won't just refund my money. So I guess I'll tough it out. But I expected better, and wont by WD again. Like ATT wireless, I'll return to Seagate and accept that average is the best I'll ever get I suppose.
