3 out of 5 eggsWhat's up with these

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: All drives pass "complete smart test" and test out on WD's Lifeguard Diagnostics. But ... Drives do not stay on line ... is it the drives or NAS

Cons: Ordered 4 drives. One failed smart test at get go. Replaced by Newegg. Now I'm in nowhere's land and starting to suspect the drives .... see other thoughts below

Other Thoughts: I have a QNAP TS-451 4 drive NAS. filled with 4 WD Red 3T drives. My NAS can't seem to stay up more then a couple of months with out a drive getting a read error and being taken off line. The drive always passes it's Smart Test (complete) and twice each drive has gone though WD's Lifeguard Diagnostics (each one has passed). The NAS is on a approved UPS so it's not power glitches. I did a compete memory test on the NAS ... no problems. I have replaced the NAS and still have drives falling off ... So now I'm suspecting the drives.

So, what to do with this expensive brick ... buy more drives even thought they check out??? Perhaps a different brand of drive? OR maybe buy another brand of NAS and see if these drives work better in it? You tell me ... I rated these drives 3 stars because I'm not sure ... (just a data point for those who are shopping ... hope you don't have the same fate)

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Well! 3X Raid 5 ESATA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Using in an Esata box with RAID 5 (3 drives so far), plan to add hot spare and expand in the future. Cool running and decent perforance (crystal diskmark SEQ 500MB read 115MB/s with raid 5 and encryption and write 125MB/s). No noise yet I dont sleep next to it either. +eggs for good packaging and quick delivery from newegg!

Cons: all is well so far

Other Thoughts: please handle carefully, use a static wrist band to avoid damaging. performance will increase with additional drives and plan till fill all 8 bays making one drive the hot spare.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I had 2 WD Green 2TB drives running in RAID 1 for about 2 years in my DS211J. Drive 2 always ran a couple degrees hotter than drive one because of the air flow inside the NAS enclosure. Drive 2 failed. I replaced the WD Green drives with a pair of these WD Red 3TB drives about 4 months ago. The transition over went very smoothly and I have had no problem with these drives to date. The second drive still runs a couple degrees warmer inside the DS211J.

Cons: No cons to date.

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Been installed for about a year with no issues. Set up 6 of these in a raidz2 pool connected directly to the mb.

Cons: The fact that HDD manufacturers are able to market drives as x TB when we all know it is a lot less. But that is a rant for the pub.

Other Thoughts: This is a home system primarily used as a media server and backup target for a few PCs along with hosting a few virtual hard drives that I tinker with, so I have by no means seriously tested these under load.

4 out of 5 eggsThis is an OK drive

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Decent drive. Runs cooler than Greens or Blues (at least in my machines.) Quiet. Decent price when on sale.....

Cons: My first NAS came with a GREEN drive. I added a RED drive for RAID 1 and eventually replaced the other green drive. Both Red drives failed within 6 months after their warranty period. They don't make drives like they used to.

Other Thoughts: Bought a new NAS that can handle larger drives. Starting out with two of these drives in RAID 1. We'll see how they do.....

3 out of 5 eggs50% success rate

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: When it works, it works well. When I added one of these drives to my storage array to replace a failed drive, I got a faster rebuild speed than with any other disk.

Cons: When it fails, it fails horribly. The second drive added to the array caused the controller card to lock up, requiring a reboot to fix.

3 out of 5 eggsManufacturer doesnt properly own their quality issues.

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: 7/8 of the drives I ordered work great. good price. large capacity.

Cons: 1 drive Dead on Arrival (brand new). both vendor and manufacturer charge customer return shipping (additional cost) for DOA items that never worked (not customer's fault).

Other Thoughts: End up being charged the price of a new drive to get a used (refurbished or recertified) drive. End up being charged additional to return the defective brand new drive.

5 out of 5 eggsOwn 15 of these in various sizes.

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I have,
four 5TB drives in RAID 5 in a QNAP 451
eight 3TB drives in RAID 6 in a QNAP 869L
three 2TB drives in RAID 5 in a QNAP 469L

13 out of my 15 drives i bought here on newegg. the oldest drives, the eight 3TB drives, are 2 years old at this point. no failures and no headaches so far. whisper quiet and don't heat up past 42*C.

Cons: my only issue was that 1 came DOA, but it was due to VERY poor packaging on the merchants part (not newegg that time). but WD cross shipped me a new drive without even taking my credit card number for a deposit. in got here in 1 day. they saw that I have 50+ WD drives registered and did me this solid favor. so I really can't complain about the DOA unit.

Other Thoughts: i see a lot of people here complaining about DOA units. it's important to note that a lot of times the drives are mishandled either by the people at the warehouse or the carriers. they dropped, tossed and kicked around. so there is a high chance of you getting a drive that is DOA or one that fails soon after installation for this reason.
