5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives No DOA

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: I bought 8 of those drives at once. Ran all of them through the long SMART test, twice. (Each test runs 7 hours) 4 drives tested at once. On the end of test, ran write Zeros to drive. (7 hours) ... I tested the drives for a week before I added them to my NAS.
- All drives passed, no problems.
- I added them to my server in a Raid5 configuration. Using BrtFS to monitor and balance the data on the drives and so far, no problems.
- I had 8 x 1TB WD Black 7200 RPM drives before. I can't tell the difference in speed.
- I copied over about 5TB of data onto them, took about 7 hours. No corrupted data. Everything went through fine.
- Drives are in operation 24/7 for about a month now. No problems.

Cons: - No problems so far.
- If anything does happen to them, I'll update this review.

Other Thoughts: People that complain that it's a slow drive (5400rpm vs 7200rpm) need to realize it's meant for a Raid configuration. if you have Raid5 the data will be read from many drives at once. If you want to just use 1 drive or use it in Raid1 (mirror), buy a different, faster drive.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for it designated purpose-NAS, but be sure to make sure your firmware is up to date before full time use

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: - Moderate noise output at full chat
- Low heat output
- Heads stop spinning after period of no activity--this saves money and drive life

Cons: - My drive had the aggressive head parking timing that was fixed via firmware. I finally got around to fixing that issue, more than two years after purchase
- The firmware update software is a DOS-based hell. I had to spend way too much time in the command prompt to make the software work. And I do not even remember how to do it again if I had to tell someone!

Other Thoughts: As stated above, after correcting the firmware, this drive behaves as an NAS drive should. I have this unit installed in a Rosewill RX-358 external enclosure and have it connected to my Netgear Nighthawk's USB 3.0 port now, giving a bit of network storage. After the update, the drive spins up upon Windows boot and when accessing the mounted network folders I have the drive partitions set up in. If there is no activity, the drive stops spinning. After the update, write errors and freezes are non-existent when using Windows 10's file mover. I'm not into bench marking so I just try to move my media collection and compare speeds to my still-running Vantec NexStar 3. I have no complaints now, but I do wish this drive worked out of the box.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price.

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: The price point is great for a 3TB at the time of writing this. I had a couple 2 TBs go bad in a NAS and decided to outfit 8 3TBs to use in a RAID6. They've been working well and are plenty ample for most ARM based NAS that will have a hard time pushing more than 1Gbps .

They aren't as heavy as I'd expect. I guess going from WD Blacks from yesteryear into a new likely lower platter count 3TB they have found weight savings which is nice.

NAS found the drives easily as expected.

Cons: I haven't found any cons yet.

Other Thoughts: They came packaged well in a no frills box which is fine by me. Wasn't a retail looking box you'd find in a Best Buy or something. If this gets me cost savings all the better.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable drive

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Western Digital makes good quality products and their customer service (post-sales support) is excellent. The Reds are quieter and cheaper to run (less power and heat) than faster drives. 3TB is currently the best price/capacity unless you amortize the cost of your RAID system.

Cons: This is not the fastest drive (but still much faster than my RAID system).

Other Thoughts: I already have 3 of these drives in my 8-bay Drobo and have no complaints. I've actually been replacing older RE3 drives and am happy to have less noise. I've seen plenty of drives fail, and WD's RMA policy is rather easier and faster than Seagate's.

5 out of 5 eggsDrive works great in a complicated setup

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Drives work good in a harsh enviroment

Cons: Intellipower Drives spin down when not in use. So if you need something off that drive, you have to wait till it spins up. I accept that.
I have about 20 of these drives and the "pro" version also. They have been stable and so far, not had but 1 fail. I think I'm ahead of the curve. By the way, my system spins 41 drives. So far, the system is over 120 Terra for a home media server. Yes, I'm nuts.

Other Thoughts: I am currently swapping out all my older 1.5 and 2 Terra drives for these particular drives. So far, I'm having good luck.

1 out of 5 eggsAfter 9 months Drive isdying

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: Good, fast when works

Cons: After only 9 months of use this drive is starting to fail. Noticed the failure started happening with disk wirte errors. Downloaded WD's disk diagnostic and ran the extended test on this drive. Drive came back failed with too many bad sectors

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Erika B.,
Thanks for bringing this concern to our attention. Assuming this drive was operating within a Network Attached RAID Storage enclosure, and the RAID was healthy prior to the onset of this concern, it is recommended utilizing the write zeros test on the Red drive and retry the extended test to rule out corrupt data within these sectors before determining this drive has failed with bad sectors. Please know this drive is not intended as a bootable primary or secondary storage within a PC outside RAID as we have WD Green drives for secondary storage and Blue or Black drives for Primary boot drives within a desktop configuration. We want you to rest assured that we indeed stand behind our drives and will gladly assist you with further troubleshooting, if you want or simply replace your in warranty drive for you. You can reach us directly by phone or Email from the information below. We ask that you mention this Newegg review with the support team member on your initial contact with us.

1 out of 5 eggsSame as everybody else. D.O.A. Not 1, but *2* DOA.

This review is from: WD Red 3TB NAS Desktop Hard Disk Drive - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30EFRX

Pros: I got to open a box?
They made sweet, sweet, buzzing whirring and clicking noises when I plugged them in.

Cons: Slow shipping as usual (but free). Next time I'm just buying my drives off amz*zon (seriously their filter won't let you put the names of other companies in the review?!? bunch of dwicks) prime. Cause when you need drives, you NEED drives.
Going to have to wait for the RMA process and another 1-2 weeks to get replacements.
Uh, 2 out of 2 dead drives.
Tearing down my home server to expand a raid array and then having to put it all back together with no new drives.

Other Thoughts: If you're constantly seeing RMAs for a product why do you keep selling it? I should've read the reviews, and thought, 'hmmmm that might actually happen to me'. Usually I look at the reviews and go, 'pfffft mine will be delivered just fine.' The weird thing is I bought more of these because I have 4 others that I bought last year locally and they've been great. Quiet, cool, decently fast. But geez, if WD has decided it just wants to take a brown trout in a box and put a warranty on it, I need to switch brands fast.
