2 out of 5 eggs1 bad drive out of 5 - 59 days later

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Cheaper price - but not if 1 drive out of 5 fails 59 days later.

Cons: 1 drive out of 5 fails. 59 days later. When buying these drives keep in mind the failure rates of these, and when they fail. It negates any sale price you receive. Thus you end up spending more of your hard earned money.

2 out of 5 eggsOrdered 2 - one DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I bought two of these for a RAID enclosure. I'll have to add to this when my replacement arrives... Price was right.

Cons: One of the drives I ordered was DOA. I've heard that this was happening a lot with these drives...

Other Thoughts: It's very unfortunate that I have to pay shipping to return a defective product.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent balance of price, performance, and capacity

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: quiet, large capacity

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Bought the 3TB model (WD30EFRX-68EUZN0) to replace a 5900rpm 1TB Seagate LP. The Seagate is still working after five years of power-on time, but I needed a capacity upgrade.

The WD Red is significantly quieter than the Seagate, which surprised me. It's installed in an Antec Skeleton open-air case next to my desk, so I can hear everything. Spindle noise is nonexistent (or insignificant next to the fans), and I estimate the seek noise to be about the same as dropping some paper clips on desk.

I've been monitoring the SMART stats and I haven't noticed any over-aggressive head parking -- or any, in fact. Performance is more than adequate for high-capacity storage purposes.

This is an extremely premature review so I can't make a reliability report, but I will follow up on this if the drive fails prematurely.

Be sure to practice good electrostatic discharge management practices, everyone! ESD can cause many partial failures and erratic behavior in addition to outright equipment failure.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage/DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Fair price for the storage you receive. NAS specific drive.

Cons: I read the reviews, should've listened although the price seemed right. I purchased two of these for my NAS system under RAID 1. The drive failed and would not mount. Tried it as a stand alone on my Windows machine, drive inaccessible thought he other drive formatted just fine.
Starting the RMA process...Sheesh.

Other Thoughts: I have typically had good success with Western Digital drives as they've had the lowest failure rate amongst the moderately priced/quality drives within the same class from other manufacturers.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Norman, we regret hearing that you received a drive that is not working for you. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a drive that is not working for you. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you directly.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Reliable

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I bought two of these for routine backups and duplication work (including RAID 1 on occasion). The data is related to my business, so I didn't want to waste time with "desktop" hard drives.

Solid, predictable and decent performing - not much more you can ask for.

Cons: no really

Other Thoughts: Copy two 40GB partitions, one to each disk, in about 4 1/2 minutes (concurrent transfer using a highpoint 5422a storage dock).

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good!

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I've read many reviews about DOA drives. I ordered 5 of these on March 1 2014, and as of today July 27 2014, all drives are working fine using software RAID and a bit over 70% space utilization.

I've also read many reviews about poor packing for drives. There was NO issue with this shipment. Inside the main shipment, each drive was packed in it's own custom-designed bubblewrap+cardboard container. (In my previous purchases of 2TB drives a couple of years ago, the drives were wrapped in generic bubble wrap and packing tape.)

Cons: I have not had any issues so far. I've seen NO S.M.A.R.T errors. Nor have I seen any other issues with the drives.

My A/C has gone out a couple of times, and the server closet became very warm before I could put a fan in. Still no issues with the drives.

Other Thoughts: I set these up as a RAID 5 partition in a Rosewill RSV5 5-bay enclosure using CentOS 6 and the MD software raid. I did NOT use hardware RAID provided by the port-extender card.

These drives work well. A couple of days ago, I moved the 5 drives into a Roesewill 8-bay enclosure I've had for a long time, and the drives and partitions came right back up. These drives have been powered on pretty much continually since March 1024.

I use these drives to stream media to various devices in my house, and I use them to keep backups of home PCs and remote servers as well. The media streaming is mostly at night, but the backups run every hour or so, so these drives are fairly active.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Little Drives!

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: - High storage capacity.
- 3 year warranty.
- Very fast. Pulls 140 MB/s sequentially! Faster than my WD blacks.
- Solid RAID performance. 330+ MB/s in soft RAID. No dropouts.

Cons: - A little pricey. Although you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: Been running four of these drives in BTRFS RAID 10 with 6 months of uptime, with no issue.

One drive came from elsewhere and the other three came from NewEgg. Was packaged great and no failures to this day. Lets hope they have a long life. My WD blacks, which are similar to these have been going strong in my desktop for four years now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives!

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: -Large Capacity
-NAS Capable
-Good Performance

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've read a LOT of reviews complaining of D.O.A.'s, but I own 10 of these drives, some of them as old as 2 years and have had ZERO D.O.A.'s and ZERO failures in that time! I have been using these in a Windows 8 storage space configuration for the time being, and they have worked out amazingly well. I will continue to use these drives in the future for sure!
