1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: NONE

Cons: DOA Was waiting for this drive so I can do a Raid with 3 other WD Reds
I was lucky the other three passed the test this drive just clicks and
windows won't load so its a dead one.

1 out of 5 eggs2 failed in 18mos.

Pros: 3 year warranty is the only 'pro'

Cons: I bought 2 from another retailer,
both lost their volume and capacity within 18-20 mo.
All data lost.

Other Thoughts: WD is shipping me 2 replacements,
new or re-manufactured remains to be seen,
which I won't be able to trust, either.

I guess I'll use them as extra BU drives in/out of a dock.

1 out of 5 eggsReluctant to Buy

Pros: WD Red drives are solid performers and perfect for NAS systems. Price per terabyte is good when you catch them on sale.

Cons: Not the fastest drives, but in NAS systems the hard drive isn't the slowest link in the chain. Questionable packaging practices from Newegg.

Other Thoughts: This is directed more to Newegg than WD. I like WD Red drives and plan to buy more, but not here. Newegg's practice of tossing a drive into a box along with some padding makes for a 50/50 chance your drive will function when it arrives. They really need to get back to properly securing hard drives for shipping.

Newegg has done more harm than good to their reputation over hard drive packaging issues over the years. Getting it out the door fast is not always beneficial.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far i love Them

Pros: Bought 2 and put them into a RAID 1 config. They run my WHS and are upgrades from Seagate 1.5 TB. They are running in a very small inclosure 24/7 for the last 4 months and i haven't had a hiccup yet. the Case is in a cabinet and has endured some heat... These are storing and serving almost 1000 movies and all mine and my GFs user files to the tablets, 2 laptops, 2 phones, 1 desktop and the internet. I have done a good deal of video editing while streaming mulitiple HD movies and copying large files to them and I didn't experience any lag!

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: If i got a dud i would be upset but would still use them.

1 out of 5 eggsCAVEAT EMPTOR!

Pros: Was great when it worked.

Cons: The reliability of this drive is highly questionable. I'm on my second drive from WD after I RMA'd the first one. Now this drive is on the verge of failure according to my NAS. And before people ask, yes, the NAS is alright since I have another drive in there chugging along just fine.

This seems like a series of lemons from WD and I hope they learned some lessons from this drive series. I've heard the 4 and 2 TB drives are reliable but for whatever reason, the 3TB series seems to be a dog.

Other Thoughts: The irony of this drive is that it's specifically made to be used in NAS and yet I'm already experiencing my second failure with this drive in a Synology NAS.

I still believe WD makes good hard drives. It's disappointing because this is the first series of drives from WD that I've found not to be reliable.

Unfortunately for WD, I might be looking at other competitors more closely after this fiasco.

5 out of 5 eggsJury Still Out

Pros: Large Capacity
WD Warranty
Price

Cons: None as yet

Other Thoughts: I only bought 1 WD Red drive since NewEgg was out of the HGST drive I wanted......I was reluctant to try the Red with all the negatve reviews but I've had good luck with WD in the past.
Time will tell if WD has fixed the huge problem it seems to have had with DOA drives.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow, unreliable

Pros: wasn't DOA

Cons: high latency, low reliability

Other Thoughts: Bought 4 for a home NAS. Two of four drives failed after a year. Did extensive testing before putting into actual service. Very high latency starting data transfers (read), sometimes up to 10+ seconds. After a year one disc started throwing ever increasing SMART errors then failed. Shortly after another disc did the same.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Plugged them into an existing FreeNAS array and everything worked great. Upgraded from the Samsung 103SJ drives. Transfer Blu Ray rips at 95-100 MB/sec.

Cons: None
