5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Works great, no errors, very fast.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: You can't get higher capacity with very little failure rates.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate to Review of 5/10/13

Pros: As stated before, when it works, it works well.

Cons: Reliability is still questionable.

I raised to two eggs because I was able to recover the data as explained below.

Other Thoughts: If this helps anyone, here is how I recovered the drive described as failing catastrophically in my review of 5/10/13. Error was 0X24 (IRQL not less or equal) even when starting from Windows 7 CD or from a Windows XP CD or just mounting as a non-boot partition. That's pretty serious as you can't do anything to recover the data. The rescue comes from using Puppy Linux. Using Puppy Linux, booting from CD I was able to mount the defective disk without the system crashing and was then able to transfer all readable files to another disk. After that I used Gparted under Pupply Linux to reset the partitions properly (no change just back to original). After that, I was able to mount the disk as a non-boot partition on a WIndows XP computer and run CHKDSK. Of course CHKDSK found many errors and directory loops. However, after "fixing" the disk, surprisingly, it would boot and I was able to image the disk to another drive. Call me crazy, but I imaged to a Western Digital RE WD2000FYYZ enterprise drive. That drive is performing flawlessly as of today.
Still, using the original disk (remounting on same system) I see the previous signs of problems. That is, long hangs trying to read, so it's really broken. The new drive shows non of that. At least now I'll be able to scrub the old drive so i can RMA it. Before, it was non-returnable as the data could not be erased.

I need to note that I have used 4 of the 640 GB WD black drives for several years without issue. It also needs to be noted that a person with a failure is 10X more likely to write a review. Still, that results in a failure rate of approximately 2% based on the reviews here. In DPM terms (defects per million) that's 20,000 DPM out of the WD factory. To put this in perspective, the semiconductor component industry targets 500 DPM as a minimum acceptable level. For assembled boards the target is higher, but nowhere near 20,000. So, I still maintain that WD's quality needs improving.

Having said all that, the enterprise level drive is working well and I suggest that, if your data is important to you, get the best drive you can afford. The pain associated with a broken drive is not worth it. Back up often and rotate your tires (just kidding :))

5 out of 5 eggsWD Black WD102FAEX 1TB

Pros: Seems to be fairly fast and responsive. Windows 7 installed no issues.

Cons: Had to RMA the first one. Not neweggs fault sometimes things happen.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommend this product. Also to others who to deduct eggs because of RMA issues like DOA shouldn't affect your egg status threw Newegg. It could had been dropped by shipping company and anything else.

5 out of 5 eggsReviews are broken

Pros: Doesn't anyone find it strange that all WD BLACK series drives from 1TB - 4TB have the same amount of reviews?

1 out of 5 eggsDissapointed

Pros: Only Pro is that it go to my house quickly.

Cons: DOA, Let me just say that i thought WD was suppose to be the better harddrives. Well my first harddrive was DOA i installed the OS and after the first restart it started ticking.
I returned it and they sent me another replacement. The second drive would not save any files as hindering me from installing my os without it having major issues, including packet loss and corrupted files. Im asking for a refund and buying a Hard drive from Best Buy. Overall very disappointed with all this hard-drive problems. Idk if i got a bad batch or what but im tired of dealing with returns and wait time to replace it. It has been a month now and i still dont have a working computer.

Other Thoughts: Im not bashing on Western Digital. But does anyone test these hard-drives before they send them? Might go ssd from now on.

3 out of 5 eggseh

Pros: pretty decent when it works.

Cons: First one started becoming really really slow and failing s.m.a.r.t. test right after installation of windows. Did an RMA which took about a week and the new one seems to be working fine.

Other Thoughts: Once my wallet grows a little more, I'll turning this into a storage drive and will be installing windows on an ssd. I wasn't very impressed with all the failures I read about for this drive, considering its WD's "leading edge" drive.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed

Pros: Well know drive

Cons: Failed bad sectors. This is the 4th of 5 to fail.

Other Thoughts: method of shipping needs improvement. I am sure the drive was fine when it left Newegg warehouse in Memphis.
