3 out of 5 eggs2 out of 2 failures (UPDATE)

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Excellent after sales support from WD

Cons: Failure in the 1st place

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my previous review.

I contacted WD support and an RMA was organised with no questions asked. The HDD was shipped back to WD Malaysia via FedEx (at WD's expense) and a replacement unit has now been dispatched. I will provide an update if their is any issue with this replacement unit.

Despite being somewhat disappointed by the drive problem, I must complement WD on their after sales service which in this instance was second to none.

1 out of 5 eggs2 out of 2 failures

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheaper than buying in Australia

Cons: Both have developed errors on S.M.A.R.T testing
No warranty coverage in Australia

Other Thoughts: I have a total 8 of these drives which I purchased for the supposed reliability. I am only using them in a domestic environment but they are on 24/7 in a Synology RackStation RS3614xs+ rack mount NAS drive.

6 were purchased in Australia from 2 different retailers and 2 were purchased from NewEgg. Both of the NewEgg drives have now failed S.M.A.R.T testing by the Synology NAS drive. The 1st drive starting failing just outside the NewEgg RMA period but NewEgg were good enough to provide a RMA replacement. The 2nd drive has now come up with 5 bad sectors after ~3500 hours use.

My problem now is the WD Australia will not cover the warranty as it was purchased out of country so I will need to explore my options with WD USA.

I don't know if these drive can't handle the additional shipping from the US or if these "Bare Drives" are made to a different standard to regular drives but it may just really an unfortunate coincidence that the only drives to fail are the ones from NewEgg . The drives themselves were well packaged by NewEgg during delivery so I don't know what the problem is. I note that a couple of other reviewers have experienced early failures as well as a DOA so it may we'll just be a WD QA issues.

If you are buying from Australia can I suggest that you don't buy from NewEgg because of the additional warranty hassles should you have any issues. It is worth paying the exorbitant prices differential to buy the local product just for the Australian warranty and support. Lesson learn't for me.

5 out of 5 eggsBought two of these RE 4TB

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Large space, but keep in mind the actual usable space will be around 3.6TB.
- Make sure you format these drives with the GUID partition table (GPT) partitioning scheme (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2581408). This allows you to use >2TB drives.
- I plug my two RE4 into StarTech drive bays to act as external drive storage, works great, just make sure your drive bay states it has been tested with 4TB drives.

Cons: ...you know, when I received my drives, the packaging was wonderful. They actually put them in these drive-shaped encasing. The encasing were so cool that I actually couldn't bring myself to throw them out...so now they sit there looking for something to cover when I ship something.

Other Thoughts: Crucial Micron shook the ground with slashing the SSD per GB to ~60 cents from OCZ's $1.20 per GB. Western Digital should be the first to offer a 4TB SSD cheap, that would be a memorable PR event. ;)

1 out of 5 eggsNot an Enterprise caliber drive

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Seemed like lots of storage for the money. A recognized brand name I have used in the past.

Cons: Worked OK for 7 months then died completely. WD's repair didn't last.

Other Thoughts: Sent it back to WD, it was repaired, but only worked for 3 days. Sending it back again, asking for a replacement. I expected more from an "Enterprise" drive from this manufacturer.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsUse in a Raid

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These last for years and years

Cons: People don't use them correctly

Other Thoughts: This is not, not a drive that is made for use in a desktop or similar. Use in a NAS or a server, and you wont be disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsDead on arrival.

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Older 2 TB RE drives I have function well and have not had any issues. Hoped for same experience. Was actually packed well, although first time I have ever ordered just one drive from Newegg.

Cons: Dead on arrival. Spins up partially, makes a loud click, spins down, repeat. Tried on multiple SATA ports and power connectors in my Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 PC. Neither box would boot with it installed. Connecting it after booting did not allow it to be initialized. Going back.

Other Thoughts: Frustrating that quality assurance is still not assured even with expensive enterprise-class products. A WD Black drive I bought less than two years ago had to be exchanged. At least WD's RMA exchange process for it was smooth.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer, it is unfortunate that you experienced a faulty drive. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a dead on arrival drive. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive, Bad Packaging

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -Low infant mortality rate
-Very Fast for a Spinning Disk
-Advanced RAID featuresets available
-SATA3/6.0Gb/s
-Feels sturdy (smaller drives are sometimes too light and poorly balanced internally)

Cons: Newegg consistently fails to package these drives properly, they are very heavy with all the platters in them.

I routinely see 1 in 10 damaged in shipping from newegg, other vendors are able to properly package these so I usually order these from alternate vendors to save the RMA headache.

Other Thoughts: I always keep at least one spare on hand for spinning or SSD in a business critical environment

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive...while it lasted

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Large capacity, high transfer rate, good with heavy loads. I used this as my game drive.

Cons: Expensive, started corrupting files after about 8 month. At 10 months, I started up my computer & it ran a drive scan on this drive on startup, with a whole bunch of unreadable data. After about an hour, I just killed the scan & rebooted my computer, skipping the scan. Luckily I got a SeaGate drive from my friend for $150 the day before, so I transferred everything over to that drive & formatted the old drive. I ran a disc scan after the format to see how much of the drive was lost, but the scan come up with no problems. So at this point I don't know if I should attempt to get a replacement through WD or attempt to use it again & see if I run into the same corruption problems.

Other Thoughts: I expect the fact that I have over 700 games on my Steam account alone that were being constantly updated on this drive may be the cause for it's early demise. So while the drive does state that it's good under heavy loads, I can't say that it is good over extended heavy use.

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: warranty

Cons: packaging

Other Thoughts: compare the DOA HDDs from this site vs the site that is a river that runs through S america.... it's roughly 1:100 in favor of the river site.
