Features

Features
Industry's highest capacity nearline drive - WD RE SATA hard drives are available in capacities ranging from 2 TB to 4 TB to suit even the most demanding storage needs.

Highest performance for business-critical applications - WD RE delivers 6 Gb/s transfer rates, sustained sequential data rates of 171 MB/s and high random I/O rates.

Designed for quality and reliability - With a field-tested 1.2 million hour MTBF,
this high performance drive delivers the highest level of reliability for 24x7 operation in up to 100% duty cycle applications.

Dual processor - Twice the processing power to maximize performance.

Vibration Protection - Enhanced RAFF technology includes sophisticated electronics to monitor the drive and correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time. The result is a significant performance improvement in high vibration environments over the previous generation of drives.

Multi-axis shock sensor - Automatically detects the subtlest shock events and compensates to protect the data.

RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER) - Prevents drive fallout caused by the extended hard drive error-recovery processes common to desktop drives.

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.

Thermal extended burn-in test - Each drive is put through extended burnin testing with thermal cycling to ensure reliable operation.

Dynamic fly height technology - Each read-write head's fly height is adjusted in real time for optimum reliability.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Packaging

Pros: You don't deserve a pro for this horrible packaging.

Cons: Horrible, terrible packaging. I realize that I'm ordering a bare OEM drive. But that doesn't mean that Newegg should put in in a box with a piece of bubble wrap. Not wrapped in bubble wrap. Not immibolized in the box by bubble wrap. Loose in the box to bang around unprotected on all sides except the one that the bubble wrap is on. What is their shipping department thinking?!? This is an expensive, precision piece of equipment.

The way my drives arrived, there were two drives in their own individual boxes in one larger Newegg box. The two smaller boxes are the ones described above. To make matters worse, the smaller boxes were shoved up against the side of the bigger box with NO PACKAGING. So it was essentially a hard drive with two thin layers of cardboard protecting it.

Other Thoughts: I just ordered three 3TB WD Red drives. One good, two DOA. Packaged similarly to the 3TB drives above.

I will never buy hard drives from Newegg ever again.

1 out of 5 eggs1st DOA second slow and noisy

Pros: Not much at this point. Regret the purchase.

Cons: 1st Drive was drumming its heads from the moment I powered it up... Newegg quickly replaced it for me... or as quick as return ship and wait gets...
Second drive runs but makes more noise than it should and is noticeably slower in performance that it should be.

Other Thoughts: All in all, this is why the HD manufactures are doomed. They are all putting out trash products with high DOA and in-life failure rates. My firm uses SSDs for anything under 250GB now and as soon as the 500's get down to the $250 range, will make that move as well. Give it another year or two and the HD manufactures might as well bag it and sell all of their interests to China... they have nobody to blame but themselves for the crash in quality over the last couple of years.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD RE, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a dead on arrival (DOA) drive. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy, and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you directly, if necessary.
As a troubleshooting step, we recommend running either our WINDLG diagnostics software or Macs built-in Disk Utility to check your drives health.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Limited Warranty

Pros: When it worked it got very good performance.
171 mb/s.

Was well packed by newegg because I bought so many of them they kept them in the original packaging that WD sent to them.

Cons: One of the five drives purchased was defective 40 days after purchase and they absolutely refuse to stand by their warranty.

I called Western Digital and they claim that these drives are not covered under warranty as they are considered OEM drives.

I was adamant about the 5 year warranty and they requested a copy of my Newegg receipt.

I sent them the receipt, waited 5 days, and they still deny the warranty.

Legal action will be consulted with our lawyers.
I wonder how many other people they do this to.

Cons: No complaints so far.

Other Thoughts: Hoping that this drive lasts at least to the full warranty period.
